Title: ST1300 Engine Oil

Hi all greetings from the Sunshine Coast Queensland, I have just acquired my first Honda ST1300 a red 2002 with just under 60,000km on the clock. I have no books or service records so planning on doing a full service, so my question is what oils and filters HAVE YOU FOUND to be the best and what things should I be looking to do while the bike is on the operating table.

I did the same the first week I had my st13. (bought @13,000km, now 77,000km), live near toowoomba also in qld.

What i have been using for a while-

Air filter - whites, avail on ebay, much cheaper than honda, and look same side by side. Every 20-30,000km (but slack with that)
engine oil - penrite 10w-40 synthetic (hpr10 i think it is called) every 10,000km
Oil filter - ryco z436 every 10,000km
coolant - nulon red long life (10 years)
Brake/clutch fluid- any DOT4, but normally nulon myself,500ml will do the lot
diff oil, 80-90w heavy duty every 20,000km, 1L will last for lots of changes
rear wheel splines - loctite moly paste (not grease!) @every set of tyres
Spark plugs - ngk iridium, last a really long time
Fork oil- 7.5w (50/50 mix of 5w and 10w motul), with 110ml oil level & stiffer springs (I am 86kg)

There are heaps of guides and mods (can get addictive :-) )on the forum.

If you have the body work off also check for coolant weeps (different spots for different years, not serious, just messy)

Welcome aboard, Laurie.  I like doing my own services too, and once you know your way around the bike, it's not at all hard.

As David implies, the air filter change schedule isn't vital if you're not riding on dirt or in dusty conditions.  Getting the tank up and the nine screws out is a bit of a task compared with the old cars that let you get to it with one wingnut!  Even getting the dual seat back on with the front "ears" engaged, without doing your nut can be a challenge.  :grin

Laurie...I use a K&N air filter on my ST1300. They aren't real cheap but they don't require cleaning very often and come with a lifetime guarantee.

As for oil, I also use Penrite MC-4ST Synthetic 10W-40. I usually buy it here: https://tinyurl.com/y4ag59kg It's a bit pricey so best to buy it when they have a "sale" on...

Thanks for all that information this is just what I was hoping to see , as things have unfolded I have just started 5 weeks holidays away from my new ride so will be eager to get back home and start looking after my ST , last Thursday my son and I were able to jump on our bikes and do a 200km run my first ride on the ST, after the first couple of km I knew I had made the right decision in buying the bike after selling my cruser I bought three months before. So once again thanks for the help and I think this is information most newby will appreciate after trying to put together the huge amount of information on the forum.

         Shell Helix HX5 Diesel Oil 15w-40
Oil filter  -  Ryco Z436
Brake & Clutch Fluid -  Castrol DOT4
Brake Pads  -  MetalGear International
Diff Oil  -  Castrol 80-90w
Spark Plugs  -  NGK
