Title: Some good news - the Wallaroo/Lucky Bay service back soon.
Post by: Langers on October 29, 2020, 10:26:18 AM
The on again, off again Wallaroo to Lucky Bay ferry service appears to be back operating very soon. Yesterday I rode to Wallaroo to check out the boat, having followed its epic voyage (via a ship tracking App) from Venezuela through the Panama canal back to Adelaide last month and then Wallaroo last week.
Their pricing is up on their website and it appears motorcyclists are getting a really good deal (and rightly so). A one way fare for a motorcycle is $50 which includes the rider. A Senior pillion is $29. Standard adult fare is $36.
Accommodation on EP can be found at very reasonable prices - a couple of weeks ago Julie and i stayed at the Cowell Commercial Hotel for $50 for the night, the bed was comfy and the room was spotless.
Having travelled the Pt Lincoln to Adelaide road far too many times over the years, the ferry will be a welcome return.

Thanks for the "heads up" Langers.    It is worth considering as we are thinking of taking the caravan over to Coffin Bay.   :thumbsup

I'm not sure you'd get much change out of $350, one way with car, caravan and 2 people.

Eek!!  For that money I would choose to drive the long way around.   At 660km, and with an early start, Port Lincoln is quite achieveable in one day, even towing the van.

Yes, so would I. It does make the motorbike deal look pretty good. And it is some of the most boring 400km of motorbike riding you can find anywhere (particularly if you have done it a few times). During the 20 years we lived in Port Lincoln my mother visited twice. Mum expected us to head over at least twice a year to visit and explained it was only right because it was shorter for us to travel. I learned at a very early age never to argue with my mother (or any other significant female in my life for that matter).

Compared to Kangaroo island that's a bargain, although I am pretty sure I paid less for North Stradbroke Island when I went there.

Thinking the same about the car/van/trailer fares. Even with my camper trailer rather than a van, it adds up.

:think1 But then skipping the bit from Pt Wakefield to Whyalla would still tempt me.

Wonder if we had enough committed to attend an Eyre Peninsula RTE if we'd get a better deal? Doubt it given our numbers, but sometimes wishful thinking is good. o:)

Well, it would appear the ferry service is recommencing tomorrow https://spencergulfsearoad.com/book-now/

Without fanfare, advertising or advising those who are on their email list for updates. How they expect people to know and go is just beyond me. The cynic in me suggests this has been an exercise in getting the ship back from Venezuela for refurbishing and moving on - again. And again they will blame poor support from the locals.  Oh well, while it's here I'll have to pop up and do a short trip, just to say I've done it.

Well, the state was in lockdown less than a week ago.  It's hard to make a fanfare about anything at present because things can change very quickly.
