The reaction to war crimes exposes Australia’s shame
Angela Mollard
When our cricketers tamper with a ball, we hound them for months. But on one of Australia’s truly dark days, we find excuses.

I think it is a mistake to assume those who call talkback radio are a fair representation of the majority of Australians (just as the alleged perpetrators are not representative of the overwhelming majority of armed service men and women who serve our country with distinction). I'm not going to comment on the allegations, I have not read the report nor have I experienced armed conflict in any form. I do not condone murder or torture (although there may be legitimate justification for forceful coercion depending upon the circumstances). Anyway, I reckon the media should butt out and let the process run its course.

While I mostly agree, I do believe these things need to be exposed as for too long this sort of thing (especially with the military) has been kept behind "closed doors" as such for way too long.

As a former Soldier whose 14 years of Service were bound by the Geneva Convention, I was mortified and seriously disappointed that our Soldiers breached the Convention and the Rules of Engagement for petty Murders.
There are no excuses for their behaviour. They don't deserve to serve, they don't deserve sympathy.

I agree Gary, but I don’t think all awarded medals should lose them because of the actions of a few. I also don’t believe that the chain of command were not aware, if they weren’t they were not good leaders! Same with Cosgrove not being aware of bullying and sexual abuse at ADFA!

Yeah, I don't agree all medals, however those who witnessed the crimes and said nothing, are also culpable.

Hastie said he heard rumours, and yet he did nothing. Just as culpable in my opinion.
