Title: SA Cherry Gardens Fire - Jan 2021
Post by: StinkyPete on January 25, 2021, 06:22:23 AM
We've had a pretty exciting time since about 1600 hours yesterday.   Strong north winds and temps over 40 degrees created extreme fire conditions,  and it happened, with a large "Out of Control" fire in the hills to our east.   Wind changes made the progress of the fire hard to predict, and the closest "Evacuaton Zone" map (shown) got to within 4km of our place as the crow flies.     Needless to say, we packed the essentials and were prepared to bug out with the caravan if we needed to.   The danger has reduced this morning, with rain forecast for later today, but in the meantime the fire continues to burn and forecast wind changes throughout the day and before the rain add to the unpredictability.

I note a chappy has been arrested in relation to allegation of starting a fire in the area. If found guilty I'd hope they throw away the key irrespective of whatever misfortunes he might have suffered in his 60 years.

My daughter and Grandchildren live in Hillside Road, Greenhill, at the top of the hill before Summertown, in a very dangerous spot as far as bushfires threat goes. They have been very lucky so far, fingers crossed.

I rode out to Aldgate depot this morning with the knowledge it's in the orange zone.  Fire trucks are everywhere and the smoke is evident.   Road closures in Mylor.  Stay safe everyone.

I thought we may be moving again after I got a CFS Bushfire Emergency Warning at 16:50 via iPhone message yesterday “...Take shelter now and listen to ABC radio ...”. That got my attention so we gathered the cats, medicine bag, toiletries bag and Alice grabbed some clothes. I went outside to have a look and saw large smoke clouds on the other side of the ridge line about 1.6km away as the crow flies.
Of course our radio is still packed after our recent move to Adelaide.
Fortunately, the fire was heading East, South-East so we were never in real danger.
Nevertheless it was a good wake-up call for us. Now to find that radio and make a plan.

My brother at Mt Barker had a sleepless night as it was 3km from his place, on the other side of Mt Barker.

The principal benefit of having a Bushfire Plan, is that the careful thinking has been done in advance, so when the emergency arrives there's no prevarication over what needs to be done.  We have a written plan that describes the checks at the beginning of the fire ban season, on days of Extreme or Catastrophic threat, and when a fire threatens.

My Brother was a volunteer in NSW RFS, so I'm sure he has a plan.
