Title: Electric horns no no
Post by: pault on February 23, 2021, 03:42:48 PM
looking at after market horns. On fleabay alone there are lots. A good brand like hella put out 115db? Then there  others? Claiming 350db plus??    Surely this would be BS?? Or am I one of little faith.

350db will be hard to achieve, unless you put your head inside the combustion chamber of your bike.    :grin

That clearly shows why my hearing is stuffed.  I flew light aircraft at about 100 dBA (more in take-off and climb) with minimal ear protection for an average of 8 hours a day for months on end.

They must be using a very strange measurement, but whatever they are doing it's just specsmanship aimed at the unknowing.  Rusty's linked page is right.

Those of us with memories intact will recall how the manufacturers of consumer-grade sound systems gradually migrated from specifying amplifier power in RMS to PMPO (peak music power output), simply because 200W PMPO reads a heck of a lot better than 10W RMS.   But even having said that, I have no idea what these sites are doing to come up with a figure of 350dB

350db plus would be pure fantasy

44 years on the railway didn't help my hearing
What did you say again   :fp  :grin

I wore out a stebel, from my defunct memory, the compressor used an eccentric rotating in a bore with sliding seals which moved in and out to compress the sir into port in the side of the bore. Compact design low amps.

dB is the abbreviation for decibel which is a logarithmic scale.

Every 10 dB is 10 times louder than the next. e.g. 20 dBA is 10 times louder than 10 dBA. 30 dBA is 100 times louder than 10 dBA, etc

Every 10 dB above 100 dBA would be 10 times louder, so 350 dBA would be  10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 louder than 100 dBA.

I think they might be BSing just a bit.

Numbers schnumbas.  We're used to "trillions" these days so 10 billion trillions is easy to imagine!

Yes same here. I bought an electric one claiming similar db’s but while loud nothing like the airhorns,
