Good skills Russell, and Sue from what I've heard.

Once you have a few things sorted out, I can see an overnighter sometime soon.  A camp ground with good facilities, plush grass, close to a pub or cafe.

I reckon there's a few other campers on the forum, anyone else interested?  Ladies and gents welcome, but I don't think I'll be able to convince Helen.

My camping days are over.

I thought mine were too, but if Neil and Val can do motorcycle camping tours of the USA, I reckon there's at least one more left in me.

And then, there's always one more, until there isn't.

Already less stickers on there as I've been slowly peeling them off!
I'm thinkin' I'll need new finger nails by the time I've finished... :rofl

My camping days are over.

That's what I thought too...and, to be honest they probably still are...
I figure the trailer will come in handy to carry Sue's makeup around... :whistle  :p  :grin

Oh, and thanks again Michael for your advice on our purchase!
After lots of rain overnight and early this morning the rain gods decided to give me a break so I actually managed to get home without getting a wet bum!  :runyay

Yes, on my list, but looking less likely with the lockdown and travel restrictions Dictator Dan keeps imposing, relaxing, etc...

Just waiting for Anna Stay Away to say it’s ok to come back home when ever you feel like it.

From where a lot of us sit in VIC, at least she has kept to QLD safe compared to VIC.  I'd be grateful for what you've got, it's probably better than the alternative of case numbers, hospitalisations, and deaths VIC has and this is despite the lockdown days in Melbourne currently at 258.

But I suppose it could be a case of the grass is always greener ....

Yeah, so frustrating down here, hopefully we've seen the worst.

The upside is so much spare time (for some) and cash (for some) that they can search for new toys and buy 'em.

The trailer is already looking diferent as I've completely removed all of the stickers.

Oh, and for those that may be interested, it's an Ali-Lite...
Title: Re: Our Latest Acquisition...
Post by: Williamson on October 17, 2021, 09:41:46 AM
.... it's an Ali-Lite.

Ali-lite are very (err) light, 65kg comes to mind, but the tare will probably be on the compliance plate.  They are very popular with a couple of my mates.  They are deceptively large inside, one of the guys packs a market gazebo in his, so plenty of room for strawberry jam, or other necessities.

If / when you tire of it, it'll be an easy sell.

Yeah, the trailer was a bargain.  There's another on FB Market Place for $1500, a bit too pricey for me.  But hey, in the end it's worth what someone will pay.

Here's a pic of the compliance plate - tare 60kg.  My Classic is 95kg.

That one is a bit newer than our one but gives me a bit of an idea of what it may be worth down the track...

Just saving up now for a coupla new tyres and looking at fitting new lights...speaking of, are you running LED lights on yours?

Just saving up now for a coupla new tyres and looking at fitting new lights...speaking of, are you running LED lights on yours?

Yep, LED stop/tail and indicator lights, something like these:
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/294044865317?hash=item4476709325:g:uwcAAOSw0WdgCS2y (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/294044865317?hash=item4476709325:g:uwcAAOSw0WdgCS2y)

And red/amber LED clearance lights, like these:
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/224311263865?hash=item3439fe4279:g:L34AAOSw34hf-uC1&frcectupt=true (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/224311263865?hash=item3439fe4279:g:L34AAOSw34hf-uC1&frcectupt=true)

And, wait these more, white LED strip lights under the trailer lid, like these:
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/224549271794?hash=item34482df8f2:g:LZgAAOSw0S5g~9gO&frcectupt=true (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/224549271794?hash=item34482df8f2:g:LZgAAOSw0S5g~9gO&frcectupt=true)

And .... some flashing amber LED hazard lights, like these:
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/265356105280?hash=item3dc874d640:g:-EwAAOSwGMlhY~Fu (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/265356105280?hash=item3dc874d640:g:-EwAAOSwGMlhY~Fu)

The stop/tail and indicator lights are wired-up to the bike and operate as trailer lights normally operate.

All the others are wired separately to a battery (thanks Garry), in a battery box (d'oh!) in the trailer.  These are switched (and fused) to operate independently of each other and the bike.

The battery is charged at home before I leave, and topped-up as I ride.  It lasted for two nights bush camping (before the Mudgee RTE earlier this year) and then with intermittent use over the next two weeks.

The flashing amber hazard lights are very bright.  On the way to Mudgee, at a pit stop in the middle of nowwhere, I stopped on a crest, and switched on the hazards, a couple of guys on sports bike stopped to see if I needed assistance, they said they could see the hazards from the previous crest around 2km back.

The battery box is like one of these:
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/164184827268 (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/164184827268)

It is almost a complete package, with a battery voltage indicator, US and ciggy lighter type sockets, etc ....  It's far too big for the motorcycle battery, but handy storage for other small bits 'n' bobs.

Thanks for all that info!  :thumbs

At this point I don't think I'll be fitting a battery or anything like that, but I won't say it won't ever happen!

So far I'm just concentrating on getting it roadworthy as such.
I've spent ages looking for ADR compliant LED lights but you have to pay an arm and a leg for them so I'm thinking I might just have to settle for ones without.
Trying to find some that have the right spacing for the bolts too as I really don't want to drill any extra holes if I don't have to.

Thinking about these: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/393399550973 (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/393399550973)

Not sure whether I like the look of them or not...  :think1

... So far I'm just concentrating on getting it roadworthy as such...

RWC, I didn't bother, my Classic is not registered, it doesn't need to be if towed behind the ST1300 (it's narrower than the bike - by about 10mm), it has a trailer exempt plate.

I expect the Ali-Lite trailer to be even narrower.

... Trying to find some that have the right spacing for the bolts too as I really don't want to drill any extra holes if I don't have to. ...

That'll be difficult without perhaps taking the existing lights off, taking them to Supercheap, Repco or wherever, and physically comparing them.  I think you'll need to be very, very lucky to match 'em.   If you can't, IMO the important thing is get some bigger, to ensure that they will cover the old holes, and then the old holes can be easily plugged.

How about a pic of your rear end?  Err, trailer that is!!!

I didn't even know that was a thing.  I wonder if that holds rue for South Australia as well.

Doesn't look like it Bodo. Nowhere on the Transport SA site does it say anything about registration exemptions for anything. It may well be an exemption from roadworthy inspections etc. which we don't do, rather than from registration.

Hey Michael, your exempt plate is only good in Victoria...If you travel into NSW or South Oz you'll need to have it registered...

Nope, it's roughly 1040mm wide so quite a bit wider than the ST...  :fp

Already had them off to measure the spacing...the bolt holes are roughly 50mm apart.
As for the size of the tail lights I'm looking at, they are pretty much the same size as the originals...  :thumbs

It is my understanding (and that of a few motorcycle trailer towing colleagues) that other states honour VIC registration (and licence) requirements and rules, and vice a versa.   There's so many difference between the states re. rego and licence requirements.

I made a call to RTA NSW before the Mudgee trip, after a very, very, very long wait, they verbally confirmed above.  But I have now asked for confirmation in an email.  Before towing the trailer to SA or other states, I'll do the same.

States & Territories are required to honour and not interfere with the registration standards of other States & Territories

Very famous case in SA when they started issuing big fines to WA vehicles for not displaying rego stickers after WA had done away with them. It was found no State/Territory had the right to enforce their State/Territory standard on an interstate vehicle so long as it met the requirements of the vehicle registration/exemptions of the issuing State/Territory.

A family discussion on Sunday morning found its way to the way the various States & Territories are dealing with COVID restrictions, especially at State & Territory borders.  Younger son, Andrew, remarked that it's the 21st version of railway gauge agreements.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rail_gauge_in_Australia

I think we have a similar situation with vehicle registrations.

These have gone by the wayside as the numberplate light is only in one tail light and I really need it in both!  :||||

Back to the drawing board!

I might just have to either go for a different light altogether or buy a separate numberplate light and stick a few extra holes in the body...

That link doesn't work either... :fp

Before I try to fix the link, is it okay for any other FB users?

No, it's on this FB group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/Motorcycle.Camping.Australia/ (https://www.facebook.com/groups/Motorcycle.Camping.Australia/)

It's a post with some pics of two guys on bikes with Ali-Lite trailers in FNQ.  The trailers seem to be very popular.  There is a word for that?

Might be content for group members only then.

Yep.  Not a bad group though, plenty of info re. motorcycle camping and motorcycle trailers.  There's also a parallel group, Australian Motorcycle Trailer Owners - https://www.facebook.com/groups/1779366849008663, (https://www.facebook.com/groups/1779366849008663,) which is also a good resource for info.

Been giving the new ST a bit of TLC...

Still trying to decide what to do with the panniers...as in, do I try to remove the knee pads (as seen in the original pic at the start of this thread) or leave them?  :think1

Looking good Rusty :thumbs. You could try heating the pads with a hairdryer to remove them easily.

Yeah, remove 'em, but only if you can without any damage.  And then maybe place 'em where they were intended.

Thanks JD & Michael... :thumbs

I got rid of the ugly tank protector with a hair dryer with no issues but that was just a padded sticker.
I'm thinking the thicker rubber pads might be a bit harder but I'll probably have a go as it looks bloody awful as it is...

*Just an update...

The rubber pads came off easier than expected!  :runyay
Of course that wasn't the end of it as there was a plastic film applied to the painted area of the pannier which had been placed around the rubber pads.
The hairdryer helped in getting that off and now it's looking like new!!!  :grin

Oh, I got a roadworthy for the bike this arvo so after a quick trip to Vicroads just before closing time the bike is now registered in my name.

While I was there I also decided to get a new numberplate as the old one was cracked across the mounting bolt... :thumbs

Another update...

I swapped out the ST screen with my old one yesterday...

The previous owner had tried to remove a sticker off the screen and in the process pretty much ruined it as whatever he used to remove the sticky ate into the plastic.
I wasn't overly concerned when buying the bike though as I still had the original stock screen from my other ST.

The next job was to make up a couple of restraining cables for the top box (using stainless steel cable) as there was only one ratty cord stopping it from flipping right back.
Once that was done I moved onto fitting the knee pads to the fuel tank which ended up being easier than I thought it would be.

Today I took the trailer over to Leongatha to get two new tyres fitted. I'm glad they were fitting the tyres as it looked like one hell of a job to get the old tyres off and to get the newbies on!
I'm certain they were regretting telling me the price quoted for the tyres included fitting...  |-i

Now I'm just waiting for the tail lights I ordered last week to turn up, then it's off to Vicroads next week to re-register the trailer...  :thumbs

The tail lights arrived and have now been fitted...
Bit of mucking around with the wiring trying to work out what colour wire did what but eventially got it sorted, thankfully just before I flattened the ST's battery.  :whistle

Visited Vicroads today and got the rego sorted and a new number plate issued!  :runyay

Thanks Michael!  :thumbs

I hadn't planned on taking it but it probably does makes sense to take it to Toora as we're staying there for a couple of days so the trailer might come in handy for carrying all of Sue's makeup...  :whistle  :rofl
Otherwise I'll give it a run down to the Tooradin RTE... :grin

I have now fitted a set of handle bar risers that I received in the mail this morning courtesy of one of our members (Blacki)...

Thanks again, Paul!  :thumbs

Now all I have to do is test them out...
