Title: Jumper Leads
Post by: Brock on May 23, 2012, 09:59:14 PM
Here is an idea prompted by Roper whohad a wee problem on saturday while we were heading to visit Mitch. While waiting for me on a side road, over the freeway Dave somehow developed a flat battery, fortunately he had jumper leads.

So there we were on the side of the road with various bits off the bikes trying to access the batteries, successfully of course. Lead connected, and after a little while of getting some charge in, Daves bike decided it would start. Of course, once started Dave realised that he needed something from the top box, or more correctly needed to lock it.... :|||| :|||| thank goodness for a spare hiden key...

Any way, back to the idea, and no its not about getting and hiding a spare key.....

I thought (hard to believe I know) that there had to be a better way to do the jump thing without taking the bikes to bits. So here it is. Go to your favorite parts store, and get a set of jumper leads ( the 100 amp jobs will do) and  a set of DC plugs (Anderson plugs)

Cut the clamps off one end of the jumper lead, trim the insulation back and crimp on the anderson terminals. If you have it, fit some heat shrink sleeving to support the connection.

Work out how long you want the cable to be, and cut it to suit. Use some yellow crimp lugs to fit on the end of the cable, heat shrink again and connect to battery.

Fit the other anderson plug to the remaining bit of jumper lead, and Bob is your related persom

Now to jump start another bike, (or be jumped) all you have to do is pop the seat, plug in the lead, connect to the other battery and away you go. If both bike are fitted with anderson plugs, then if the lead is properly configured all that needs to be done is plug in. :runyay :runyay :runyay :runyay

For those in the West, I can assist with the crimping and heat shrinking as I have the right tools..

I was going to do this at some stage. Roper does have good ideas, or passes on good ones that He hears about.

I was thinking that a 175amp Anderson plug would be best as it would handle more amps.

What amp plug was used?

50amp, anything else is too big to store and the termials are too big for the wire. A 50 amp will handle the start current as its only for a few moments

Do I get any royalties for this ?

Bloody good idea. See 2 heads are better than one. (DON'T GO THERE WHOEVER YOU ARE) :-(((

By the way Brock, it would appear that the loose wire I found that day must have been causing a short because after re-connecting it the battery's good as gold.  :hatwave

The replacement battery I ordered arrived yesterday  :||||  I'm going to try and fit it in that space above the tail-light. I'm thinking about connecting it up to the original to get an extra boost on start-up. Do you see any problems in me doing that ? :think1 |-i

Well done Brock,

Dave R

The main problem with connecting it in Parallel all the time, is if one battery fails, it will drag the other one down at the same time.

A system that will allow it to charge  is a good idea, and then it can be connected if needed. Like a dual battery system for a 4x4

PROBLEM SOLVED

Battery doesn't fit in that space and apart from sticking it in a pannier or the top box there's nowhere else big enough.  :cuss

Well, at least I've got a spare in the shed but knowing my luck I'll need it when I'm far, far away :well

If you do the jumper lead mod, its not such a big problem, and the leads will fit in the duck tail :grin :grin

This idea has been around, but I have mainly seen it when the Anderson plugs are used to power a trailer.  It is only a small step if you have the plug in place to use it to jump start the bike (or someone elses)

It's exactly what is used on caravans & such, I was going to fit one so I can power my trailer & also use it to hook up a solar panel but your idea of using it for jump starting is an added bonus

My thoughts were, that it could be used for the trailer later, and if needed it would be simple to unplug under the seat to jump start some one, or plug into the tow bar connection.

If using a trailer with battery/ies, a lead could then be plugged into the trailer plug to supply power for campsite lighting, power the laptop/tv/microwave/Laser intruder defence system.....

OK then,  I know the microwave is a bit silly :grin :grin :grin

Right then, I have some suitable wire, just got a dozen Anderson plugs off ebay for about $2.20 each, got crimps to suit the battery. Can even use the opportunity to add fly leads at the same for future projects. If any one wants to do the mod , let me know and the leads can be made up and the jumper leads modified.

Dave, do you want one for your bike, we can meet up to make it for your bike, then I will know the length needed for the 1300, we could tidy up those other power leads at the same time.

Brock,

Whenever you're ready.

Saturday's out as I have to go on a run to 'Gnomes-ville', then on to Collie, with the Blue Knights.

I'll give you a ring

The Jumper leads got a live test this afternoon. A gent near the Joondalup Lakeside shopping centre had a flat battery, (that was easily accessed) so clipped on the leads and his bike started. Unfortunately for him, he was also very low on fuel, so he puuered and banged of down the road to try and get to the servo.... I didnt have a piece of hose, so couldnt give him a top up.

Yellow??? I think not...

White parked on the shoulder of the road works better (with Hazards flashing of course... No, not the red n blues cos I dont have em)
