So.... my Bagster tank cover is missing the clips that hold it to the tank.
Apparently, the Australian distributor isn't bringing them in and can't supply parts.
They're horrendously expensive to get from OS....
Any creative/handy types out there able to suggest an alternative?

Are they plastic or metal? :think1

What's the expensive part? I found 'em for around AU$14 each, although the website hasn't been updated since 2021, so probably closer to $20. If it's the postage from UK or US, there are members on STOwners.com that'll will forward them on.

Mine are Bagster OEM, they're plastic. May be another job for the 3D printer.

Send me sizes and I will check that too.

Next time I have the front saddle off and access to the the clip (which from memory I'll need to loosen the tank or upper fairing), I'll try to remember to get some measurements.
In the meantime, StormST may be able to provide some details.
-
I don't know how strong or hard printed plastic is, but these clips bear quite a bit of stress. They don't usually break- just get lost (although I haven't lost either of mine yet, but I do tuck the ends in very securely).

Crikey, you must some serious tension on yours, mine I pull tight to just take-up the slack.

I lost mine - in the garage. I suppose it was more likely of a case of misplaced, wasn't too fussed, would have quite happily got out and about without it. Found it when putting things away, and then put it back on the bike.
-
Thanks all.
I thought they were metal - from the memory of previous Bagsters I've had but that was more than 10 years ago.
The airfreight postage cost from Europe was something like 70 euro's - so well over $AUD100 (unless by ship - very slow- and I have a big trip coming up I really want the bag for)
I might have a browse at Bunnings or one of our local fastner specialists and see if I can make anything work.
Shame they aren't coming here anymore - I've had them on four bikes in past and loved them.
Cheers!

Here you go, StormST!
Still not cheap but cheaper than your other option...

You would have thought for US$57.80 they could have supplied 2!!
By the time you add freight @ US$10 and tax (which Amazon have to add @ 10%) you're getting near AU$120!! Oh, plus your CC bank adding currency charges...
Keep looking!
-
That's Aussie Dollars, Bill! :whistle
And if you're an Amazon member like me, you get free expedited international delivery.
Even if you're not a member, simply spend another coupla dollars and you'll get free delivery anyhow...
Oh, and the GST is already included in that price plus there's no bank charges for currency exchange as it's through Amazon Australia... :thumb

Get me some measurements. I am certain that I can make something for a lot less than that.

Too cold to be dicking around in the garage tonight, and then a full day tomorrow, when I have a chance (probably Tuesday), and if I remember, I'll get some measurements, more pics and post 'em.
Remember? Might need a reminder.

Remember what??? :whistle :popcorn

Surely it wouldn't be that hard to make one out of some aluminium or even a piece of steel... :think1 :popcorn
-
Hope these will suffice.

.... and more ....
-
,,, not finished yet ...
-
... trouble loading no. 11 ...
Will try later.

Somebody owes me a beer.
And if it works out, I reckon it's a slab for Dragonstaff.
-
After looking at those pics it doesn't look like it would be that hard to fashion one from aluminium... :think1
Of course, if you can print one up on a 3D printer that's strong enough, all the better! :thumbs

Over to you then Russell. :popcorn

I know nuffink about 3D printers, but as an original is not available, I suppose it a matter of programming it with all of the data available and keep fingers crossed.

I probably would have a go at making my own rather than spending a motser on one from OS especially at the price they are asking...but, as I don't have a Bagster, I don't need to... :grin

Do you want to learn about them? I have 2 3D printers (packed away in boxes) in my garage you can have... :popcorn
-
Thanks Michael. I will see what I can do.

What are they Rusty? Bloody Enders?
I have an Ender 3 that the boys got me for Father's Day last year. Bloody useless piece of junk. You spend more time fiddling with it than you do making successful prints. I haven't switched it on since the last time it failed back in January.

No idea what they are as I inherited them when my brother passed.
I think he paid something like 8 or 9 hundred dollars each for them at the time.
Unfortunately old tech now so probably worth next to nothing.
I have a box full of the plastic filament in assorted colours too...
-
I've recently upgraded from a Prusa Mini to a Prusa Mk4. It can print bigger objects at about twice the speed of the Mini, and Prusa printers are rock solid reliable I'd be reluctant to print those clips, as 3d printed items are layered, a bit like the grain in wood, and will always have a weakness in the plane of the layers. Choosing the orientaton for the print can help with strength.
However, I'd make the clips out of aluminium, as its just a bit of flat material with a couple of slots and then bent to form a hook.

That was my concern too, but I thought that perhaps more modern printers did a better job than they did approximately 8 years ago when my brother played around with them...

That was my thinkin'... :thumbs

Perhaps being plastic they are less likely to scratch the tank paint work.
-
You could put some insulation tape between the hook and the tank to protect it... :think1

I only pull lightly on the retaining strap, there's not a lot of stress on them.

Or perhaps some shrink plastic. Either way, I have an issue with having to develop a solution to a problem that developed with the original solution. Could be why Mr Honda decided to mke 'em out of plastic rather than metal.

I think you'll find it is the Frogs who make Bagster gear

Righty oh. Better later than never.
I have, with the help of a mate who can fly Fusion 360 much better then I (I can't) come up with a design for these from Williamson's measurements, and printed two out. They are bright orange because that is what was in the printer, but I can change that to black, white, red, blue, or grey if required.
Who wants to be the tester for me? Williamson? StormST? Someone else?
Pm me an address and I will post a couple out.
-
I like them (in black). I wonder if the printer is able to make the angle smaller so the clips would lay flatter. The originals come with two slots to feed the tape through but I just use one of the slots and tie the tape off with a pass under itself.

A shallower angle or a shorter short leg, Biggles?
The pics Williamson put up made me think that the strap was actually sown at that point and tightened elsewhere, so if that bit needs to be longer and have two slots in it, that could be done. I would make it longer so as to not lose too much strength. They are printed standing on edge so that the layers are perpendicular to the direction of pull from the strap.
Would you like me to send you some to try?

I'm sure I'm not the only one in here with an opinion! Can someone confirm they originally came with two slots and were intended to be tightened by pulling through the two? As I said, it's been a long time since I adopted using one slot and tying off the strap by feeding it under itself and the back between into a hitch.
Regarding the angle- a shorter leg would still work and reduce the protrusion of the clip. It only needs to hook under the tank and is held there by the tension on the strap.

It looks like you are the only one with an opinion, Biggles, including the OP.

I was going to respond earlier but figured as I had posted a link to a brand new strap and hook thingy previously, I figured it clearly showed it only had the one slot...
See here: https://tinyurl.com/mh64vjy8
And then there were the pics posted by Williamson showing just the one slot as well, which, I guess is why Dragonstaff had them made with one slot... :grin

All true- sorry to waste your electrons. :'( I went mad and walked all the way to the garage to see what I have and... blow me down, it has one slot. Now I'm trying to recall how the tape attached to the cover, because I'm just using a loop through the slot on the cover. I seem to recall the cover comes with some sort of latching clip. Anyway, I still have the original tapes and hooks, and can't recall ever breaking a hook. So carry on without me- I'll just be over here in the corner mumbling in my coffee. >:()
I do know the tab that goes down the left side of the head stem has two slots. Passing the long tape up and down through those has cost me a lot of time and grief every time I have the cover off! :||||
