Hi Everyone,
As per the title, I've had an incident with an emu on the Tipping Way to Cobar 20.09.24 for the IBA Memorial Ride.
Was fortunate that folk were heading south, saw the whole thing & stopped to assist....the man Marlon was an off duty paramedic- yes very lucky & called all the right people.
The Lake Cargellico emergency services & ambulance had me heli-vact to Liverpool ED Trauma.
In a little busted up but doing ok all things considered.
Fractured both pelvis
Right arm/hand - Broken radius which has plate & screws now, broken ulnar & broken pinky which is now in an extended cast.
Broken left thumb tip in splint.
May need more surgery on hand know more next week.
Ruptured tumor on liver had surgery but need more on this. Gut teams & trauma are working on that plan will know next week.
Lots of bruising everywhere, cuts & abrasions. Think that covers it.
All my gear & Dudley (RIP) did what they were meant to do to keep me alive.
I'll be in Liverpool hospital for a bit Ward 5E Bed 13 & visitors ARE MOST WELCOME!
Thank you to everyone that has already been in touch & all the messages & heart felt wishes that have been passed on from an AMAZING community I am fortunate to be a part of.
I Love you all, Kimmie. 0415 529 784

Glad you're okay, but what about the bike?
-
Thanks so much for sharing Kimmie.
I KNOW you are very well loved and respected across the motorcycling fraternity, and I'm quite certain we all wish you all the best with a speedy recovery. It has been a trying time for OzSTOC Members lately and we are soooo glad you are here to tell the tale.
It may have been a little blessing with the tumour thing.
Either way, get well soon, and all the best wishes for yourself and Karl at this time.
Hope to see you back out there asap. Xo
Cheers, Diesel
-
Ouch. Get well soon and back on a bike.
-
Wow! I had no idea. I was at the Memorial and this news has only just filtered through to the IBA fraternity. Kimmie was supposed to be at the Friday night dinner having made the table booking. Trusting for a good recovery from all that damage. As noted, the bike is a write-off, and almost the rider too, by the sound of all those injuries. The immediate arrival of the paramedic was a God-send, being able to stabilise Kimmie who otherwise would have been much worse off.
-
Best wishes for a speedy recovery! :X :beer

It was very important to me that word came from me...call it part of the road to recovery.
Thank you everyone. My heart just bursts with the outpouring of love & support from everyone.
I will keep you updated as things progress albiet it might be at a slower pace than I'm used too.

It was very important to me that word came from me...call it part of the road to recovery.
I can understand this. I know when I had my off in 2012 I got the hospital to contact work to let them know I wouldn't be coming in but told them not to contact my wife. If the news came from me she at least knew I was conscious.
Good to hear you're okay and hope the road to recovery is smooth. I'm guessing Dudley is the emu and it didn't fare so well.
-
It sounds like horrible luck with the accident, but also amazing luck that the off duty paramedic was driving past at the time.
You appear to have a positive attitude and that will be a major help throughout your recovery.
I wish you all the best for a speedy recovery.

Wishing you a quick and complete recovery

Dudley was her bike. But sounds like the emu is a write-off too. :crazy

Bloody hell Kimmie. I spoke with Martin and Bec at West Wyalong the other day and they didn't mention any of this. Glad you're ok!
Tis a hell of a way to get a new bike :crackup
Get well soon hey

Hi Kimmie,
Sorry to hear of your unfortunate meeting with the emu.
I had similar but much lower count of injuries in my meeting with the side of a 4WD ute (21 Sep 2015), and I know you've got some hard work in front of you.
Take the pain relief as required/prescribed, and don't wait for the pain to get too strong, as it takes more pain relief to bring it back under control.
Listen to the Physios, do the exercises, and don't push too hard.
Wishing you the eaiest and speediest of recoveries.
P.S. Next year, be prepared to watch TV shows and movies you think you've haven't watched before, only to find scenes you recognise, then you find out you watched it whilst on pain-killers and faded in and out whilst doing so.

Hi Everyone,
Just a little update. The liver surgery went well but the side effects are a killer. Indigestion like I ate 10 hamburger in 2 min, very painful & potential pancreatitis. Hand surgeon visit didn't happen due to pain levels. Temp spiked not sure why, they are trying to figure it out. Looking forward to actually having a real shower...the simple things.
So all in all I think I'm doing ok.
Thanks again to you all for caring about me, I have no idea how to repay you all.
Love Kimmie xxx

very painful & potential pancreatitis.
I had pancreatitis a couple of years ago, you don't want to go through that! >:()
Fingers crossed you get through all your surgeries with as little pain as possible... :X
-
I have no idea how to repay you all.
Nothing to repay, just get well. Dont forget to ask if you need help..

Things have turned south. I've had another set back, they had to put in another emergency drain. Unfortunately in recovery I went into septic shock, so in a whole other world of discomfort. I'll get there though eventually. Back in ICU 3 BED 55. No visitors 2day Thurs 3rd Oct pls I'm exhausted
-
Thinking of you hoping for you to turn things around and have a quick recovery but it is not sounding good at the moment
:beer
-
Hi Everyone,
Had another hiccup. Wed 02.10.24 required more emergency surgery to drain the liver, in recovery went into septic shock & had more lines, probs, drains & monitors connected to me than Frankenstein. Spent more time back in ICU, told them I missed them...lol.
Back on a ward now 5E BED 19, still running a fever & they are pumping me with antibiotics.
There are a few people (Bill, Martin, Bec, Robyn & Tina) that are coming to visit which have been arranged & those plans are still fine & my sister but can I ask that everyone else hold off pls. It's not that I don't want to see everyone just that it's taxing & I need rest & recover.
My ward looks like a flower shop compared to everyone elses...lol and they are all beautiful. The practical part of me says, send cards to home so Karl can bring them to me when I get moved closer to home & I can read them all & laugh & cry at the same time.
Home 100 Hanson St, Corryong VIC 3707.
So it been an action packed few days.
I know you are all thinking, sending well wishes & praying for me & every single one is appreciated more than you know.
Have a great day all
Love Kimmie xxx

You are a brave lady with the correct attitude and you will surely get through this 👍, thoughts and prayers are with you

Hi Everyone 👋 👋 👋
In the hospital lab of Kimmie, we finally found the cause of the temp spikes...I have a lung infection. So on Friday night 04.10.24 at midnight I was placed into isolation.
They are still pumping me with antibiotics and monitoring my temp. It's pretty yukky & I don't wish this on anyone.
Hoping to get some physio 2day cos I need to feel the floor under my feet.
Don't think I'm going anywhere in the near future.
In 5E BED 28 now. Pls check with me 1st if you want to visit full PPE must be adhered to.
I keep being me and definitely fighting the fight.
Thanks again for all your thoughts & well wishes, I'm positive they are big part of me getting better.
Love Kimmie 🥰 ❤️ 😍
-
It's good to hear that they found the infection and are working on it, sad to hear that it is putting more of a toll on your recovery.
Keep up the positive attitude, things will get better.
-
Hi Everyone 👋 👋 👋
So 2day marks 3 weeks.
I'm still in Liverpool hospital in isolation trying to get rid of this infection. All the teams seem happy with how I'm travelling albeit slow.
I fainted during a back to bed tfer 2 days ago which required them to use a horse lift to get this old cow back into bed 🐮.
The xray yesterday highlighted more prominently a tiny fracture in the L ankle that happened in the accident not the fall. They treat it just like a sprained ankle.
Hoping for more physio today just to get out of laying down...I WANT UP!!
No word on moving closer yet.
Keep sending all the good thoughts, big part of recovery.
Missing Karl & everyone so much.
Love you all

Hi Everyone 👋 👋 👋
Well I'm at week 5 2day....wow & desperately in need of a hairdresser.
Looks like the drain is going to be having with me for quite a while yet, mention is up to 3 months. They need to make sure the site repairs properly before removing it. Was a little disappointing 😞.
On a brighter note, I walked with a crutch yesterday with the physios which was exciting & a little liberating 😊.
Hoping to try again today with the hope to be unassisted for the bathroom...🤞
Moving to Wagga is now big discussion with the teams with the drain and orthopedic & hands picking up the follow ups in Wagga as they have the facilities. They are also concerned about the my mental state being separated from Karl for so long.
So still moving in the right direction and keeping everything crossed I continue on this path.
Thanks to everyone that gave been in to visit, your faces brighten my days. To everyone that calls and sends message, it's lovely knowing that so many people care.
Have a great FriYAY & wkend
Love Kimmie 🥰🥰🥰

Great news mate.
Glad to hear positives about your progress - thanks for keeping us all in the loop.
Fingers crossed for an easy trasition to Wagga and the other Special K! :X

Wonderful news
Keep up the good work
You will be walking unassisted before you know it
Stay strong

Hi Everyone 👋 👋 👋
Well 6 weeks today & what a rollercoaster ride it has been.
Tfer to Wagga has been vetoed & now on the tfer list to Albury, waiting for a bed. Don't ask, it's politics.
The pigtail drain came out yesterday, so no more drains YAY!! Still require 1x surgery to remove 2x stints in 4wks time on the liver.
Physio are happy with my progression, think I'm the only patient who does their homework 😊. Found another finger injury which now has its own splint which doesn't come off until Xmas day...thanks 🎅
So moving in the right direction & being patient.
Have a great FriYAY and wkend.
Thanks for all the well wishes & support.
Love Kimmie 🥰❤️🥰❤️

Hi Everyone 👋 👋 👋
Well 7 weeks ago today, old man Emu met his match but put into a whole new world of surviving.
With several CRACK teams of Dr's, surgeons, physios & nurses, they put me back together & worked tirelessly with me to achieve a positive result. I cannot thank them all enough.
The cast came off on Tuesday arvo & Karl appeared from around the curtain & it was all too much & tears & cries of My Sweety could be heard through the ward. To me it was like a love story moment 🥰🥰.
I've done a lot of hard work & gone through the wringer in this 7 wks & it has paid off.
Today, I update you from the discharge lounge, while I wait for Karl to collect me and we start the journey home..YAY!!!
I still have a long way to go with rehab but heading in the right direction 😀
Thank you all again for you support as it has helped immensely.
Love Kimmie 🥰 🥰🥰

Thanks everyone!!!
We arrived home yesterday safe & sound to excited doggies & good clean country air.
I've got a reclining camp chair set up on the back deck so I can catch some vitamin D & rehab at the same time. Also is a great place to grab a little nap between physio :D.
Karl is being marvellous as you'd expect & getting used to the dingy bell of Kimmie :p
Will continue to keep you updated

Hi Everyone 👋 👋 👋
Well been home a week now & as Dorothy said "there's no place like home"!! Karl has been awesome & the menu & food are much improved from the hospital options. Not to mention the furbabies who I missed...they were happy mummy is home.
Many Dr's appts have been made and the rehab road begins. The hours of physio a day are increasing with each appt which will hopefully result in a good recovery.
Discomfort apposed to pain is a constant but wil ease over time...fingers crossed.
I'm learning that sleep & rest are paramount to recovery & not just an old wives tale. So between physio you need rest to prepare for the next round.
So I'm doing ok & I'm on the right road, just got to keep following what the Dr's say. Will keep you updated.
Have a great FriYAY & wkend
Love Kimmie

Great to hear everything is going to plan
Keep up the good work and do what the Doc says
It's so important

Hi Everyone 👋 👋 👋
Today marks 10 weeks since the story of the emu began.
The last 2 working weeks (10 days) have been filled with 8 days of Dr's appts, 1x final SUCCESSFUL surgery & lots of travel to get everywhere & rehab in amongst everything. To say I'm exhausted is probably an understatement.
Things are moving in a positive direction with the rehab a couple of degrees at a time (as that is how the measure things). Again all the rehab you have to do pays off even though it is arduous & painful at times. Slow and steady wins the race as they say and there are no shortcuts.
Karl has been a trooper, ferrying me around to everywhere & making sure my nutritional needs are met....gotta live a cheffy hubby.
So staying positive, doing everything that my therapist ask of me & I'll be nearly as good as new (in an extended period of time).
Happy FriYAY & have a fabbo weekend!!

Hi Everyone 👋 👋 👋
12 weeks today and boy have I come a long way. From being bed ridden for 4 solid weeks, going through septic shock, learning to walk, use my arm/fingers again and rehabilitation at home - who'd have thunk it!!
Telehealth call yesterday with one of my trauma Dr's from Liverpool Hospital went really well. The team were amazed that they were releasing me from hospital at 7 weeks but did say "I was the best patient they've had in a long time". Hard work and sheer determination pays off.
All other rehab/physio is a slow road as I mentioned at the 10week mark. Unfortunately there are no short cuts and the body sure as hell let's you know when you are doing the wrong thing or haven't done enough of the right thing. I've a few more degrees of movement in my wrist but it is still pretty much like a fence post (rigid). Working on my fingers with simple actions you take for granted...like opening the draw that has a bar handle (which I couldn't do last week) so there is progression but it's slow.
Karl, the furbabies & I are otherwise doing ok. We are learning new levels of time and patience requirements. I've also learnt that asking for help can be a great thing and that taking it slow and steady is better than being quick and dead (a bit extreme I know but funny how events put life into perspective).
All in all life is good.
I'd like to wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year.
Take care if you are travelling.
Thank you for being there for me.
Will catch you all up after
Xmas.
Happy FriYAY & have a great weekend.
Love Kimmie xxx
-
Thanks Kimmie for the update
Great to hear that you are progressing well
As they say "No pain no gain" keep up the good work and do what the Doc tells you
Only 12 days to Christmas
Merry Christmas back to you :hatwave

Hi Everyone 👋 👋 👋
16 weeks, boy how the time flys.
Hope you all had a fabulous Xmas & New Year. Karl & I enjoyed a quiet one with his folks visiting, eating fabulous food and having Mango Daiquiri's for breaky (as you do) 😊.
Continuing with the multiple physio that's required and have made great progress with my hips and ankle. The hip/ankle therapist is happy with the recovery that she has said I can start line dancing again but to pick the dances carefully 🤠. Also doing a bit of housework which is a physio session in itself on all fronts. Again selective in the chores I do, not trying to do everything in 1 day and have Karl pick up the balance. So getting back to a bit of normality.
Am able to walk 2km in one go now which is really impressive considering when I got home I couldn't get to the letterbox. Still no driving so rely on my ever supportive Sweety to chauffeur me around.
On the hand front, it's a little bit of a different story. I'm making progress but it is much much slower than everything else. My hand therapist is happy with the hard work I've put in to get this far. However after meeting with the fracture clinic & requiring further CT scans during the xmas break, the Albury surgeon wants to operate again. Appears that a couple of the screws in the plate are impinging on areas of my wrist, affecting my ongoing rehabilitation and how much use of this hand I will have in the long run. I have an appointment with the surgeon next week to discuss in detail what all this entails as I am a tad bit nervous about this.
On the plus side, I can now pick up a can of drink, open a draw, turn the door handles, use pegs, put on a sock & brush my teeth with my right hand. Working on a coffee cup as the weight and handles are a little more difficult, but I'll get there.
Lack of being able to use my right hand arm has resulted in frozen shoulder which isn't pleasant & extremely painful. So in addition to everything already going on am now dealing with this also.
How's the mental state, most people seem to be worried about it. Look to be totally honest, I'm OK. Get a little frustrated sometimes & wish I could get more sleep than I do. I don't dwell on what's happened, look forward to what I can do with each milestone and have a goal to get a new bike and punch out some kilometres in helmet space...all pretty positive I my book.
That's about it for now. Look after yourselves & have a happy FriYAY.
Love Kimmie xxx

I haven't as the goal is to be able to pick up a coffee cup in my right hand......so I just keep working on the physio and keep trying & I'll get there also need to build strength to hold it. In the meantime, I use my left hand which is getting used to the additional use.

Hi Everyone 👋 👋 👋
20 weeks today and not wanting to jinx myself, things are travelling along nicely.
Had the final surgery on my right wrist to remove all the metalware and screws. While they were at it the surgeon broke the capsule in my shoulder unfreezing my frozen shoulder some what. Can't say it wasn't super painful & required to spend an unscheduled night in hospital so they could manage the pain levels with the volume of medication they pumped into me. It ALL went very well though.
Without the metal now my wrist and fingers feel a lot freer than they have for a long time. I'm still bandaged for a couple of weeks but can feel the improvement already.
Working on a return to work program which is exciting & daunting in the one breath. Looking forward to this. The business & my colleagues have been absolutely fantastic through my entire ordeal & I can't thank them enough for being understanding. You rock guys!!
Still lots of physio to continue with but it seems that the road "might" be getting a little shorter.
Happy FriYAY & Valentine's Day, enjoy your weekend.
Love Kimmie xxx

Nice one Kimmie.
So glad your shoulder was able to be freed up, and glad your hand seems to be coming round. You've done very well from when you had extensive injuries.
We are all glad to hear how positively you are coming along and returning back to normal. It's been quite a journey.
Thanks so much for keeping us up to date throughout all of this as we all wish you the best. Well done that gal.
Cheers, D xx

Hi Everyone,
Well it’s been 9 months now since that day “old man emu” crossed mine & Dudley’s path and boy has a lot happened since then.
Progress update: everything is healed bones and liver wise. The only stickler is the right hand/wrist….the throttle hand. I’m continuing to see my hand therapist on a monthly basis now and have made significant progress since day 1, however, we are not going to get back to 100%. The therapist was up front with me from the start and if I can get 80% then all things considered she reckons that’s pretty good. The increments of improvement are slowing and taking alittle longer to get there these days but we are still moving slowly in the right direction.
I’m getting out in the garden and starting to do some more physical work but it does drain the energy, so a work in progress still. Pace myself and do a little bit at a time and reap the reward in a longer time period….still a win.
Still not able to open a bottle of drink (water bottle, small lids sizes) and working on it each day, still some goals to conquer. Picking up small objects and holding coins in my hand are challenging and these are practiced daily.
So all in all, making good progress and my hand therapist is extremely proud of the progress I’ve made.
Now for the good stuff………
I was given the green light to start to test ride a motorcycle after all these months of looking at brochures, comparing specifications and dreaming about colours and the eventual “ride”. I started on my short list with a BMW F800GS. Not a bad bike but the wind buffeting was terrible and not something even the largest screen you could get would fix. Next was the F900XR which was at the top of the list but I couldn’t even get it off the side stand. And you know what they say “if you can’t get it up”……LOL.
Next was the 2024 Tracer which I never rode cos the only real difference to Dudley was the electronics, which don’t get me wrong would be great but had the same engine so it wouldn’t be too much of a change….and I think I needed/wanted a change, something different.
Then there was the Suzuki but trying to find one to ride near impossible – so passed.
Next on the list was the Triumph Tiger range – 660 Sport, 800 Sport & 900 GT Pro. Well, I didn’t get to ride them all, what I did get to ride was the 900 GT Pro. A triple but different to Dudley, a little more thumpy, tractory even and no vibration through the bars. Low weight displacement made it easy to get of the stand and move without having to lower it. Was pretty impressed.
Needless to say when a 2024 pre-owned Tiger 900 GT Pro with 8200km came up for sale on bikesales in Sydney for a good price and Karl was able to have a look at it, confirm that what they were selling was good….there really was no option. So that afternoon I rang the dealer and sealed a pretty good deal.
On Saturday 21.06.25 I picked up my new to me 2024 Tiger 900 GT Pro……named Fergus
Karl followed me in the car, just in case I tired or had a problem, but I managed to make it all the way home – 546.8km. How was I feeling you say, well glad you asked. It was a cold ride home and I was frozen to the bone by the time we got home. My wrist and fingers were sore and tired, my arse was burning and my neck felt all cricked up but apart from that I was all good!!
How good did it feel……Bloody Fantastic, invigorating and alive!!
Anyway, meet Fergus. Wishing us many miles and smiles together.
