Title: SA RTE Suggestions for 2025
Post by: Bodø on October 20, 2024, 07:02:50 AM
I guess it's about time to get this rolling.  I've got a list of places I would like to check out but here's a few suggestions in no particular order

Code:
Red - closed or unsuitable
Grey - postponed for whatever reason
Orange - went there outside of Ozstoc
Green - Ozstoc Ride To Eat
Blue - what I proposed for that month, overlooked, so I went by myself
Brown - Hearsay
Yellow - Didn't stop or attend, but shall keep an eye on it

Marrabel is closed and now a private residence. has been for a year or three now.

If we do Pinaroo or Mt Mary, can we make them Sunday please.

Richo and I tried a meal at the Magpie Stump some years ago.   If we go there, I hope it's improved.

As a result of the Robertstown RTE  replacement venue research I did a pub crawl today riding out to the Blyth, Farrell Flat, Robertstown and Point Pass hotels.

Blyth Hotel - not open for lunch but does open 1700 wednesday to sunday.  Whether as an Ozstoc event or not I'll try and go during daylight saving hours for dinner this summer.

Farrell Flat Hotel - opens rather early and I dropped in had a coffee, talked with the owner for a bit and gave him an idea of what we do.  Open all year round for both lunch and dinner.

Robertstown Hotel - not open for lunch but popped in for a cheeky pint and a byo chicken and cheese ciabatta from X-conveniece.  Probably not suitable for an RTE unless it's an overnighter and you have your own caravan.  That rules me out.

Point Pass Hotel - facebook page says "temporarly closed".  That was june 2023 and today had shades of the Eureka Hotel at Redhill.  Looks like it's been abandoned and not likely to open any time soon.

Light Hotel, Eudunda - didn't stop, but there's a big for sale sign up the front.  I didn't know if it's open or not.

Stayed at the Cradock pub 3 weeks ago. I'd be very happy to visit again and have an overnighter. Good food, good accommodation and good facilities.
Farrell Flat - publican is an "interesting" chap. Parks his Harley in the front bar and heaven help you if you touch it (if you don't want it touched, why park it in the front bar?). Don't wander into the Lounge bar area and take photos without permission - we watched the publican give international visitors a serve whilst we were having a mid-afternoon sherbet. All that said, I've been told he's a handy cook/chef so as my stomach rules, I'd be happy to visit again.

I saw the bike, and the sign requesting permission to take photos.  I asked first and he said yeah sure no worries.  I didn't feel a need to touch the bike.  I took quite a few photos and had a chat with him.

This morning I learned that sherbet is slang for beer.  :beer

Thanks Bodø for a very comprehensive list of suggestions.

The first RTE is scheduled, as are the next two. The preferred choice for February had already been updated as they don't do meals!

I've reached out to some Regional contacts re some other suggestions before locking them in to see if reviews have improved, but have some backups in place.

I'll be posting venues as I can, especially where there may be some questions over being open or doing meals.

I may even suggest a lunchtime RTE, followed by an overnight venue for the same day so we can enjoy each other's company even more.

The potential of a Tri State RTE at Balranald is in the mix.

I thought the Pines Hotel at Tarpeena would be a good spot for an overnighter but they advised me they only have two rooms.  I'm looking to make it my base for the trip to Snake Valley this month.

I worked for a short time in the South East. Tarpeena wouldn't have been my first choice for an overnighter RTE. Perhaps Penola?

I thought the same thing about Harrow, but that was a good night.

I just got home from having dinner at the Blyth Hotel.  Whilst not officially opening for lunch, they said they would if they know we are coming.  I did explain our numbers aren't that big, but he said if we open a few hours earlier makes no difference to our day.  No Guinness but had butter chicken.

Whilst both pubs in Eudunda seem to be closed, the Club appears to be open still. Might that be an option at some time?

The Carrieton Hotel suggested they may close on a facebook post a few minutes ago.  That said, the post is somewhat confusing.

"The future of this hotel is now obviously questionable and looking like a nice home for us to retire in...."

Facebook page is now shut down and google changed to "temporarily closed".

It's escalated now: "Carrieton Hotel this is what we woke up to at the pub this morning 😳gun shots in the signs that was cut down and put on the footpath from the Carrieton community which has been against the publican since they have taken over. The police won’t be here till 12 as this is not that important."

Open, closed or whatever, it might be prudent to give it a wide berth for now.

Are we gunna try Balranald again?
Given Toowoomba is in March may I suggest Balranald early to mid September. It would be great for me as I would continue east after the Border Run, leave the bike in Victor Harbor and fly home. I could then fly back in Sept for Balranald and ride home after.

Now the Callington (not Carrieton) Hotel has wiped everything from its facebook page and a majority of what it had on its website.

Waiting to see the VIC RTE schedule for 2025. I still haven't finalised all SA yet, partly waiting on whether a Balranald Tri-state will be scheduled.

West Aussie Glen has suggested September as a month he may be able to do - far enough away from the National Rally for him to schedule.

Other SA RTEs will be up shortly, will allow for some flexibility.

The Coonalpyn Hotel, which was only open for dinners has advised me they are now doing lunches on weekends.

I tried the Arthurton hotel over the long weekend, and would not recommend it. The only food available on Sunday is pizza, and the advertised music is some old guy with his phone hooked up to a mixing desk and playing all the hits of the '60s. Not bad but not particularly good. The place is also full of biker-looking types but no bikes to be seen, unless it is the old chook-chaser with a milk crate on the rack for the dog. The Yorke valley hotel in Maitland would be a better option.

I went there today.  They had a full menu and no music was playing.  Chicken schnitzel, pepper sauce and a decent side (salad, pasta, egg) included, plus two pints of Guinness... I left content.  The Yorke Valley Hotel is already on the list.

That sounds more inviting, Bodo. Maybe the ownership has changed, or it may the difference between Saturday and Sunday.

I might have to try it again next time I am up that way.

Went to the Tarcowie Hotel to have a sticky beak at a television event, arrived early and had a look at 'town' but didn't bother hanging around.   Then I went to the Carrieton Hotel.  It's safe to say it's bitten the dust.

Maybe I spoke too soon.  Yesterday the Carrieton Hotel created a new facebook page under the name of the Yanyarrie pub.  Carrieton was formerly known as Yanyarrie Whim.  There is also a locality nearby called Yanyarrie.  Anyway, I shall keep an eye on it.
