Found the source of mysterious coolant leak while replacing alternator brushes. Appears to be leaking from the square hole just below the water pump leakoff, but was actually leaking from the thermostat housing hoses. Hoses are in good condition so just to clean up and re-tightening required. Decided to replace brushes with alternator in situ. Brushes about 50% worn, would have lasted another hundred K, probably, but not knowing approximately how long they will last will have peace of mind.
