Bike 1994 (non ABS), starts perfect. Took it out today to Victoria Market and back. About every 10 kilometres, it just stops. All dash lights are working, starter turns over. Leave it for like 10 minutes and it again starts perfect. Once it heats up (not over heating), temp is right in the middle. Same thing. Took me 4 stops to get home. Note has been sitting for a while but regularly started and allowed to run in the garage for 20 minutes a month.
Any ideas from the forum members ? A mechanic said, maybe Hall effect reader (distributor) & other people have suggested fuel pump.
-
It could be the vacuum Fuel tap diaphragm has a pin hole leak . If so as you ride along, the fuel turns off. I bypassed my fuel tap many years ago because of a similar problem.
-
Thanks Brock.
I will look for a link to bypass. Or is it as simple as just removing the valve and putting a joiner in ?
-
Yep. its that easy...
From memory, I think I just joined the fuel hose directly to the filter, and put a bolt the right size in the vac line. I removed the fuel tap altogether, it has never caused a problem.
-
Thanks mate. Will try that.
-
Brock, do you recall if you have remove all the plastics and tank or can you get to that, just by removing the front RHS, side cover ?
-
Maybe the right side and the tank cover. The engine cover stays on
And the seat of course
-
Thanks mate. Will sort it out. Even if tank has to be removed, done it all before. It’s pretty easy.
-
No need for the tank itself, just the plastic shroud
-
Brock - Yeah. Pretty easy, 4 screws in total. Whilst I am there, if you were me would you replace the little in line fuel filter - right next to it ? I have full history, 1 owner and serviced regularly. Only 48000 klm, but that filter looks really old. I would suggest original.
It looks to me just like 1 of those little Rico filters you buy at Repco.
Or am I wrong ? Is there something special about it ?
-
You can replace it while in there if you wish.. Mine is still original, then again so is my timing belt... Ask Wombat and WAG..
-
Thanks. Well when I got it (about 12 months ago), I changed everything. Timing belts included. Drained tank flushed, all fluids. Until this problem and sure I only ride it like 4 times a year (too busy with other stuff). I just like to have it sitting there when I want and being on club rego cost nothing. Will put it back together and take her for another ride into the city tomorrow. From the advice received from you… thank you again and other research, I am sure this is the problem. Even a story of a guy riding at 200kph on the autobahn in Germany and identical thing happened. His ex platoon is identical to mine. Ride 5 minutes, stop 5 min etc. just puzzled why. I would have thought a vacuum leak would have been, Instant. I mean the second you start. Must take a bit for this unit to build up. The other forum said it is to shut off fuel if the bike flips.
Thanks again for your help mate.

Not a problem, its what we do..

Nope did not work, in fact maybe worse.
Temperature gauge (cool day 18 degrees here) only at 1/4. Got about 10 klm. Same thing. This time however did not come back to life so quick. Waited about an hour, in fact was about to leave it at a bottle shop after 45 min trying & thought 1 more try before I go and it started. Came straight home. Again about 10klm.
Any other suggestions ?

Any other suggestions ?
I guess it could be the fuel pump, getting hot and shutting down.. Its a very rare happening..
-
Trust me to be so lucky. Took me like 2 hours to get home 10 klm last night
That is the 1, inside the tank ? I have also heard mention of a relay, behind the headlight adjustment control.
Is there 2 fuel pumps ? 1 at the rear and 1 in the tank ?

Anyone (Rusty / JD?) got a contact number for Lawrence, he knows his way around ST1100's and he's Melbourne, could be a good source for help.
-
I contacted Lawrence and he suggested you should try releasing the fuel cap if the engine dies and see if it will then fire back up.
Apparently it's a known problem with the ST...
He says there's a breather valve or something in the cap that can get clogged up with gum etc.
If you still have no luck he's happy for you to call him, just private message me for his number.
Good luck! :X

Did I PM you properly Rusty ?
-
Yep, all good...sorry, was busy cooking & eating dinner.
I've replied now...

Thanks for info, Russel
Great to see so many people on this forum, who are so helpful

Michael
