Title: I'm calling it the "chest freezer"
Post by: BigTed on April 23, 2025, 02:32:32 PM
... for obvious reasons  ;-* . I used the same frame/base I took to Wooli - but given the rooftop cargo pod disintegrated I decided to make my own.
This time: Poor Man's Fibreglass (PMF) - pine frame (dowelled), 9mm ply base, clad with XPS foam, glued canvas, paint, paint, paint, and paint.
Bolted to trailer frame via Unistrut bolts/nuts.
It looks like it has the aerodynamics of a chest freezer, but since it's close to the bike there's a good hole in the air in front of it. The Beamer has better fuel consumption than the old ST13. Surprisingly, the Beamer towing the box is still better than the ST without.

Hi Ted,

I won't criticise the quality of the build or materials, or the builder's skill and ability (far better than anything I could do), but there's a reason why commercial builds are professionally designed (well this goes for Classic, Bandicoot and a few other brands, but not Elite trailers), and I reckon it could be aptly be named the Fugly Freezer.

:Norty  (I close the door on my way out).

I'll have a better look at Sutton in 2026, and apologise if I'm wrong.

Cheers ....

Hehehehe... "Fugly Freezer" it is... even better  :grin . It certainly won't win any beauty pageants.

For me it was mainly function over form: I still use the trailer base on its own behind the car, but also wanted something practical,  light, & inexpensive I could simply bolt on.

As for painting... PMF uses canvas glued to the surface, with multiple coats of exterior paint to provide weather resistance. I won't say it's waterproof, but I'll have various plastic storage boxes and bags inside to protect those things that need it.

Sort of reminds me of my home built side car!  :popcorn
Even with my attempt at making it a little bit streamlined it was still like pushing a brick wall into the breeze...

Not to get too involved, but , with or without the sidecar, there may be a challenge. Just a thought! I know off to the norty corner :butt

Being attached to a Honda 250cc might have had something to do with it... :grin

Sorry for the :hijacked Big Ted!

Oh Nige, I think the norty corner is closed...

Awesome work BigTed, I've never made anything like this, it looks like it is well done and should be quite functional  :thumbsup

:bl11.  I’m sure you could dress it up with some custom decals which would enhance its looks and take the square look away  ++
