It was time to replace the old Dunlop RoadSmart 3 rear tyre on my ST1300 so, seeing as many of you guys swear by the Michelin Road 6, I decided I'd join the club.
After choking on the price of tyres in general, I ended up buying one via eBay.
It came from Yamaha World in Adelaide and the price included free shipping which was a bonus.
Luckily for me, it also coincided with an eBay Plus discount offer which brought the price down to $352.
I removed the wheel a few days back and, after working out where to go to have the tyre fitted, I had it done this afternoon.
Unfortunately none of the tyre service places around here can balance motorcycle tyres so I decided to invest in a cheap static tyre balancer (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/256092187490/) from eBay.
That arrived yesterday...
So, with a bit of luck I should have the wheel re-installed tomorrow... :X

Best of luck with the static balancer RuSTy
Let us know how you get on
-
At least you should decent mileage out it. I just bought a Michelin Anakee Wild for the Himalayan. Over $300 plus $50 for heavy duty tube, yet to be fitted and lucky to get 8,000km.
Buying quality isn't cheap I'm afraid.

Thanks Leo! I had a bit of a play around late this arvo.
I'd ordered some extra weights but they haven't turned up as yet so I just made do with the weights I'd removed...
I guess time will tell how good a job I did once I go for a test ride... :grin
-
Let us know how you go rusty.
I've thought about doing that myself in the past.
-
Cheers Diesel!
For the price, I reckon the balancer is a bargain, I don't know why I didn't buy one sooner!
-
Here's a helpful video if you decide to buy a static wheel balancer: https://youtu.be/CnkFgjI9Cxo?si=w_fQBzPvEHF6Z-mV :rockon
-
As luck would have it, the wheel weights I'd ordered turned up in the mail today.
So, my OCD kicked in and I've now been re-balancing the rear wheel trying to get it perfect...lol
I know it's probably not that critical but seeing as the weather is a bit ordinary I'm in no rush to get the mighty ST back on the road... :grin

$352 with discount? Wow. Prices have sure risen.

Sounds like a lot of effort to join the club, hope you like it.

Prices, not so sure, my records are pretty sketchy.
I needed a rear for the ST1300 at Mannum in September 2022, had to go to GC Motorcycles in Prospect, left with a PR5 GT (from memory) and $405 lighter, but that included supply and fit new rear brake pads.
New tyre (a Dunlop - that's what the buyer wanted - prior to the RWC inspection) fitted in October 2024 to the rear of the substitute ST1300 at Scotty's in Ringwood, $390.
Purchased ST1300 tyres twice off the internet, first were a set of PR3's (I think, it was about 10 years back). Got 'em from a Gold Coast dealer, don't recall $$, but it was damn good. Took 'em to a local dealer (K&J Thomas in Whittlesea) to get 'em fitted. Kel Thomas whined like an EH diff, said I (and many like me) were breaking his balls with internet buys. I told him the price (about $100 less than he had quoted), he said he could even get them for that price. I gave him the details of the GC dealer and suggested he buy from them.
Second set were from a highly recommended USA dealer, again great price. Local Tyre Power dealer (did all of our work cars), cost me a slab of VB for fitting. But he didn't balance them (balancer was out of action), bring the bike back next week. I didn't need to.
I couldn't be fagged dicking around with this sort of crap any more, I'll just pay for the fitting and balancing.
Good luck to you though Rusty, with all the $$ you've saved, it's you first round at Clunes next month.
-
Now you know one of the reasons I went Darkside. With the sort of riding I do (all long straights and big sweeping bends), a bike tyre on the rear wears the middle inch to the canvas before the pips are off the outside, so it only lasts 5000ks. I have done double that in the last 9 months.
I also have one of those static balancers, and they do the job quite well. It is well worth the small investment if you don't have a local tyre fitter who can also balance a bike tyre.
-

I could've taken the wheel to the bike shop in Leongatha but the last tyre they fitted & balanced cost me $65!
I swore I'd never go back there...
The local tyre service I went to this time charged me $10...and that included getting rid of the old tyre, which if I had taken it to the local tip, would have cost me 11 or $12 to dispose of it.
Good luck to you though Rusty, with all the $$ you've saved, it's you first round at Clunes next month.
Good luck getting that out of me!
I'm still choking over how much accommodation is costing for us to stay in Clunes! :whistle
I might have to pass the hat around... :grin

They have! If I had bought one from Peter Stevens, it would have cost me nearly $440 by the time I had it delivered. >:()

>I'm in no rush to get the mighty ST back on the road... :grin
I actually got it all back together this arvo but didn't road test it as the weather still wasn't the best...
-
I went for a ride yesterday and the wheel didn't fall off or shake my teeth out so I'm assuming it's all good! :grin
Today, while I was in the mood for playing around with the bike, I fitted the fork brace I'd bought off Leo (Wild Rose) a while back.
I wonder if I'll notice any difference? :popcorn

Did you?
-
Only been out on it once since and I was solo.
Unfortunately it was also blowing a gale but it did feel more stable although obviously under those conditions it's a bit hard to tell.
One thing I did notice though is it definitely felt more "planted" negotiating the crappy roundabout near home... :popcorn
Hey Leo, did you notice any difference when it was on your ST? :popcorn
-
Hey mate - got an update on your thoughts about comparing this tyre to the Dunny?
How does it rate for you?
-

RuSTy I only had the Fork brace on my 2001 ST1300 but removed it when I traded it in on the 2011 ST1300
It was a lot more stable than the 2001 model so I never fitted it. But it did make a great difference when fitted
I had a fork brace on my Kawasaki GTR1000 and it made a huge difference. The ST1300 are a very stable bike anyway

Hi Dave...
I haven't ridden much since I fitted the Michy so the jury is out at this point.
It feels good but what riding I have done has only been on dry roads.
Sorry, not much help I know... :-[
Since fitting the rear Michelin I've now bought a matching front tyre but as the old front Dunlop has still got a bit of life left in it it might not get fitted for a while... :/

Being a big bloke I figure it should help as I've always reckoned there's been a bit of "flex" in certain corners and as my pillion in a million is not exactly petite, I figure the brace should definitely be of benefit when two up...I guess time will tell! :grin

When you got the Michelin Pilot road 6's did you get the Pilot Road 6 GT or just the Pilot Road 6
I am due for tyres for the NT1100
The NT1100 is 40kg lighter than the ST1300 but I am no lightweight so got to decide which way to go
I am thinking the Pilot Road 6 not GT version
-
Hi Leo...
I just bought the standard Road 6 as the GT version doesn't come in a 170/60ZR17.
With the lighter weight of the NT1100, I'm sure the standard Road 6 will be just fine for you...
-
Thanks RuSTy
The NT1100 comes with 120/70/17 and 180/55/17
I can get the pair on ebay for $650 delivered from Port Macquarie that's $50 off with ebay plus
I will ring Two Wheel tyres near Ipswich on Monday for a supply and fit price
-
Check out these, Leo... :thumbsup
Rear Tyre: https://tinyurl.com/4r2drzse
Front Tyre: https://tinyurl.com/3pxzdevx

To late would have been better
I already get $50 off with ebay plus and they just sent me an extra $35 so I purchased them for $614
Bugger :well

You could possibly cancel your order if you wanted to go through the hassle: https://www.ebay.com.au/help/buying/buyers-can-cancel-order/buyers-can-cancel-order?id=4004 (https://www.ebay.com.au/help/buying/buyers-can-cancel-order/buyers-can-cancel-order?id=4004)
-
RuSTy
I have put in a cancellation request
So see what happens
The saving will help pay for fitting
Thank you
-
You're welcome!
Fingers crossed the cancellation goes through... :X
-
Better not post how much I just pair for a pair fitted! But that said, I got them straight away and kept the local bike mechanic in business for when I need mechanical work done. And he looks after me well as a long-standing personal customer. So that's worth the extra bucks. And mine are the GT version which the ST13 requires.
-
"MICHELIN ROAD 6 120/70-17 58W FRONT MOTORCYCLE TYRE R6-120/70-17"
BTW- the ST1300 takes an 18" front tyre
FWIW I use the 170/60 on the rear without crashing out.

It can't be a "GT" if you're running that size, Bill...
Perhaps it's a 180/55ZR17?

That tyre was for Leo's Honda NT1100 which has a 17" front wheel, Bill...

No, it's definitely a 170. I asked my guy for GT- will raise the matter with him. Although I hate to think how much more those extra 10mm will cost me! :'(
-
Should be an easy check, Bill...if it's a GT it will have GT on the side wall as in the pic below.
Cheers :thumbsup

I'm up for a new set soon so it's down to a choice between these and the Pirelli Angel GTs, though both brands seem hard to find up in Brisbane currently :fp

I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on the Angel GT's, should you decide to go that way

I've had a few sets before and i really like them. They are a bit softer but have a better road feel and give positive feedback. Have not had Michys since the PR4s.
-
I got the Michelin Road 6 on my NT1100 for about 2,000km so far. They feel good on the road and I like the chunky tread pattern which I think would be good if you have to do a little dirt like we did on a recent ride
So a :like from me
-
I got the Michelin Road 6's from Yamaha World Adelaide on ebay and like ruSTy and got both tyres delivered to me for $492 and costed $70 to fit as wheels were removed from bike and taken into bike shop (I'm lucky to have good mates to help me)
