This past weekend I went on a FarRoad (1000km in 24hrs) ride - not a bad effort given I had a prostate biopsy and bladder cytoscopy 10 days earlier (results all good, thankfully), although I will admit to some tenderness along the way.
Well, in the immortal words of Meatloaf, Two out of Three Ain't Bad.
I left Crafers Friday morning at 12.33pm for a destination of the Werrimull pub that evening via Tailem Bend, Karoonda, Lameroo, Pinnaroo, Paruna, Allawoona, Kingston on Murray, Monash and Renmark. A total of some 560 odd kilometres. The Warrimull pub was excellent, beer a very reasonable $6:50/ Coopers Pale and the meal was likewise very affordable and good. It was meat tray raffle night of coarse and I don't think I've ever been in a pub with 11 meat trays up for grabs on the night. It might be a good destination for a 3 State o/night RTE.
Bright and early (but not early enough) I rose and headed to Harrow via Redcliffs, Ouyen, Rainbow, Jeparit and Nhill.
It was just out of Nhill that I received a call from Taffy (organiser) asking if I was on the way. Indeed I said, check in is 12 to 12:30 isn't it? Ummm, no, it's 11.30 to 12 noon.
Oh, well I'll be seeing you for lunch then - a little late. Bugger.
Now, where does Meatloaf come into this (and it wasn't on the menu)?
I achieved the 1000km in 24hrs (tick), I got to Harrow in my 24hr window (tick), achieving both within the correct time period (bugger).
I'm looking forward to the next challenge and reckon I just might take a little more notice of the rules.
Catching up with fellow riders at Harrow was a highlight, as was the string singlet topped waitress at the pub :eek :thumbsup.
Apologies for the lack of photos (of the scenery and other things), I had the navigation and music going through the phone and I wasn't keen on juggling the phone out of the cradle etc, etc.

Well done Langers. You did well :hatwave :hatwave

You join esteemed members Diesel & Streak who DNF'd a FarRide at Nambucca by not allowing for interstate time changes :|||| ...enjoy the next one :chocolate-box-smiley-emoticon

Thanks for sharing.
... the Werrimull pub ...
Had a beer there late one afternoon back in the late 80's.
My bosses sent me to Werrimull to gather information because the Shire of Mildura wanted to lower the speed limit to 60km/h. I recall the fuss about it not being approved, but I see (from Google Streetview pics) that they eventually got their way.
I can remember shyte like that from more than 40 years ago, but don't ask me the rego numbers on my bikes.

Well done Mark. :thumbsup I always loved the mental and physical challenges of the long rides. As you infered, once you are "in the groove" you don't feel like stopping for photos.
-
Congrats on achieving the 1000km in 24hrs :clap :runyay
Shame the daylight savings screwed you over :'(
-
Did he actually mention daylight savings? I think he said he just got his times wrong.

Thanks Shiney, Bodo is right, it wasn't DLS. I reckon it was me just quickly reading the requirements and i saw 12pm and immediately associated it with our RTE's which are almost always 12 for 12:30. Lazy reading on my part. I got too focused on route planning, which i really enjoy particularly taking roads not travelled before and staying in small country towns with old pubs. Sadly (and i dont blame them) its becoming more and more expensive to stay in pub rooms with limited facilities. I'm not sure where this country is headed but it doesnt seem to be a good place.
-
Ahh, I guess I'm just used to the reason being DLS when someone makes it within 24hrs but gets a DNF due to the finish time being earlier than the arrival time :fp
(That'll teach me to pay more attention when reading the forum when I'm tired)

With an early finish friday week I looked into accommodation that would enable me to attend the Tolleen RTE in Victoria and even places I have stayed at in the past have gone up quite considerably so it looks like I'll give it a miss.
-
That's a bummer, Bodø! :o
We probably have the Victorian Government to thank for that with their short stay levy... :||||
-
Actually I was looking at places in Kaniva/Nhill that were a bit expensive, but just found something in Bordertown that works for me. See you in Toolleen.
-
Maybe, maybe not, Sue & I haven't decided on whether we're attending that RTE as yet. :think1
Glad you managed to get some cheaper accommodation though... :thumbs
-
I hadn't noticed that. Then again, I didn't know that Victoria had a short stay levy. The place I stayed on the way to the Smythesdale RTE, Tasmania and one other RTE used to be $80 a night, in Bordertown on this side of the border now want $132. I wasn't paying that, but did find a better rate at another Bordertown venue. The question now is which bike to take.

In regard to the Toolleen RTE, It's far enough away for us that we would like to stay overnight somewhere but after paying for Motels on our recent 5 week WA/SA/NSW trip the bank balance is looking a bit sick...
I did say to Sue we could drive up there and back in the one day but I think Sue has had enough of long drives for the moment.
I guess I still have a bit of time to convince her though... :whistle

:hijacked
Then I may or may not see you.

You could always stay a night with us. We have a spare bedroom. You just have to kick the trombone and tuba into the corner. You would be most welcome.

Thanks very much for the offer, Garry... :thumbs
I shall confer with the boss...
