:13Candy :13Candy What is the best tyres to put on my ST1300 I'm getting very bad wear on the both sides of the rear , tyre front is fine I run 41psi on the rear.
What brand is best ?
Looks like the rear tyre walls are to soft for the bike and I'm not a small guy. Also I'm not a very hard rider?
I have Harley and another Honda but the rear tyres on both bike are fine the wear even!
-
What sort of tyres do you have at the moment Marco?
-
I got the bike new in 2010 (09 model) it as that brigdestones the Standard tyres that came with the bike new

Michelin.
Either a PR3 rear/ PR2 front combo
OR
PR3 front and rear.

Hi Maco
I'm running Pireli ST Angels, very impressed so far, however I haven't gone through a whole set to make an overall judgement. But so far so good. Better than the Brigdestone.

Hey Marco.
Like you, I found the Bridgestones wore poorly. I now run Michelin PR2 and happy with all aspects of their performance.
-
I've got PR2/ PR3 combo and currently 13000 km with plenty left on the rear and the front nearly done. That's about average or better from my experience. They perform pretty well too.

Many variables to consider when comparing tyre for tyre and bike for bike. I purchase the ST in 2008 with Bridgestone 021's. My riding is 99% 2 up with panniers and topbox full, in other words all up weight at maximum. All OK for the first 5,000klms, then one day in December +34 degress, went over Mt Glorious and tore the sides out of the rear. The whiskers were outstanding. The tyre mechanic said that it was symptomatic of high temps, high weight but he said more importantly marginal low tyre pressure. Changed for a 023 and was disappointed in the general tyre wear in particular the flat spot in the centre.
After reading and listenting, changed the F & R to Michie PR2's as the PR3 was not available at the time. At the same time I fitted TPMS. Doing this made me starting thinking about the theory of tyre which could a subject of a separate discussion. In short, the cold tyre pressure should be measured at 20 degress C. Before the Mt Glorious ride, I checked the tyre the previous afternoon when it would have been 32+ degress outside however the bike resides in a metal shed, who knows what the temp of the tyre was when measured. The rear was set to 42 as per manual. I now check the tyre pressures at 20 deg if possible. There are plenty of articles on the web concerning tyre pressures, in particular articles by the 4 wheel racing fraternity.
Since being disciplined in setting the correct pressures, the PR2's have been excellent except for the road noise from the front tyre. All quiet on asphalt, big roar on stone bitumen. After some 6,000klms no flat spot in the centre and as I am not exactly gentle in the corners particular powering out of the corner, side wear in very good, only now showing signs of cupping. Handling good, wet weather good. BTW now run at 44 lbs at 20 degrees. Of interest, on a 32+ day rear at 100kph tyre pressure is 60lbs front 49 both due to temperature of the tyre/wheel assy.

running p/road 3's 1300 sizes on a 1100
just changed rear Michelin p/road 3 for another one at 24500km. yes that is pushing it to get that sort of milage, felt decidely weird and slowed my speed a bit, but with the milage I do i need to get as much as i can out of a tyre. This is the best k's i have ever done.
-
I have been using Metzeler Z6s since I changed from the original Bridgestones. I only got about 6,000 out of the Bridgestones. The Z6 have given me more than 16,000 v including a trip right up the east coast and back down the middle. I am wondering what to have for the Black Dog Ride to Alice Springs in three weeks. I am considering the Metzeler Z8. Anyone have thoughts on these?
-
I put a new sit of Pirelli angle tyres on my bike and I hate the feel from the front tyre which I replaced with a bridgestone after 300km. I flet the front end very very nervus with the Angle on the front.
the bike felt like it wanted to fall over all the time, it also felt like it was tracking.
Thats not too saying they are a bad tyre just not too my liking.
On the rear I still have the Angle fitted it feels good there
-
Gee Marco, I wish I read your response yesterday. I couldn't get a matching set of Z8s so I have gone for a set of Angels. I read a few reviews and reports and it seems they came up very well in a 24hr challenge.
I am now hoping i have done the right thing.
Thanks for your input. :dred11
-
I'm still very happy with mine. I'm not experiencing any of the things Marco has described. Makes me wonder if something was wrong either with the set up or the tyre.
-
It looks like the rubber is to soft and maybe the walls has well, just moving the bike around the shed left black tyre makes all over just from the front by the way.
At wood explain why the bike felt like it was falling over
something the new and old tyre did not do.
Hey never say they are a bad tyre it's I don't like the feel of them on the front. I just think they are better suited to a lighter bike
If you know some one who needs a front tyre I'm selling for $100
-
Hi Marco
If your tyre is or was leaving marks on the floor, then the compound is faulty. I'd be taking it back to where you purchased it. My Angel doesn't leave any marks at all. It's very stable on the road, allows smooth cornering and gives me confidence.
If the tyre is as you describe then the tyre is slowly decomposing, to place it on another bike would be dangerous. I'd still be taking it back for the supplier to investigate.
Cheers

ok will contact pirelli themselfs. The shop i got them from in Gympie told me they do not want my Business no long and never to retune there all i said was something wrong with the front end
-
Geez, talk about customer relations...........
With an attitude like that why would you want to go back anyway.
Good Luck with it Marco

Hi STérs,
I''ve just replaced a Bridgstone Battlax BT023 Rear Tyre 15,000 K's and scrubbed out on the sides right hand side the worst for some reason. I put a Michelin PR3 on for $290 fitted while I waited. Hope to get better K's out of this one :)

Geez I must be doin something wrong. I have to go tomorrow and get a new rear for my 1300, what I have on there is a 023 GT which I had fitted not long after I bought the bike in June. I was doing an oil change the other night and while I was lying on the shed floor I thought I'd have a close look at the rear tyre, it has a flat spot in the centre which has been there for a while but the right side is totally shagged and has only done 6000 kms on it, it almost looks like I've been on the track with it. Now all the riding we do is twistys in the hills and it has all been 2 up, I know some say that the 023 doesn't get the kms of other tyres but 6000 kms is F**kn ridiculous. :||||

I know some say that the 023 doesn't get the kms of other tyres but 6000 kms
I find 6,000km really odd :think1, I have one myself, with pillion, we are up to about 7,000km with normal wearing, still have plenty of tread left :thumb

My tyres , have done 9200Ks and look good.

My ST13 came with factory Bridgestones. I got 12550 km out of them. Then I put on Michelin PR2/PR3 and got 20000.
Just replaced them today. They now make a PR3 for the front of the ST13, so we'll see how this pair go.
Got 10800 out of Bridges 021s on the ST1100, so they don't appear to be high scorers.

Even my 23 rear makes it to about 11,000kms

Interesting discussion on Tyres.
I have always run the Bridgestones on both my previous ST1100 and the ST1300. I put new Bridgestones on about March last year and at best, I can account for about 5000 km as the bike hasn't been used much. I would normally expect to get around 13000km from a set. Also from this you will gather that I have never ridden anything but Bridgestone.
Have to admit, I had a bit of fun along the Bruxner Hwy (Bonshaw through to Casino) coming home from the Inverell RTE and approaching Casino I started to feel funny things happening with the bike. In short, I got home to Brisbane with a bit less than serviceable tyres. I was running two up with luggage etc.
I have been looking for tyres since then and was hoping to get a set of Michelin R3, though it seems Michelin missed the boat on their last order and they are now in short supply here in Oz.
I have a guy wanting to fit Dunlop Roadsmarts instead of the Michelins and it is interesting to note that no-one has mentioned Dunlop in this thread. My gut feel in regards to Dunlop is a big NO! Has anybody had any experience with Dunlops or heard any comments about them? I have to admit, I don't know of anyone who has run Dunlops on the bigger bikes, ie the ST or the Yamaha FJR, not that my field of experience and contacts is that broad.
Also interested in the comment about pressures.
When I first mentioned the wear on my tyres, it was suggested that I was running under inflated. I didn't accept that and had to go check. Results were 44 in the front and 43 in the rear. I had inflated them both to 42 the Thurs night before going to Inverell, at midnight and with a low ambient temp. Maybe about 15C. When I checked them the following Monday I got the 44/43 readings, same guage. According the the ambient temp. guage on the bike, the ambient temperature at that time was 23C. I guess that is a lesson to be learnt. I have always checked my tyres about an hour before heading off. This particular time I was being clever and checked them the night before in an attempt to get away quicker and easier.
Cheers

I used one set of Roadsmarts a few years back. An ok tyre (10,000kms front and back), average tyre life and average levels of grip in all conditions. A safe enough and predictable tyre. I prefer the Avons Ultra 2s and the Shinko Verges in all respects (I have yet to try the Michelin Pilot Road 2s)
On the ST11 I usually run 36 f 42 rear measured cold. On the ST13 many run a bit higher on the front in particular. I usually go by what feels right foe ride and grip, and whether the front in particular wears relativelty evenly. The Z6s I tried seemed to need 38psi in the front.
-
Saturday had a Pirelli Angle put on the front. Today, it probably has a few hundred on it and its just the best front I have ever had. Don't talk about tyres but this ones worth talking about. Just a first rate front tyre. :thumbs
-
I've got to agree Terry, I have an angel ST on the front. Wow what a difference. Very smooth very forgiving and just grips. Going through corners and switching from one side to another is very smooth. The previous battaxe you could feel the ridges in the tyre kinda like a bevel on each side. As you straightened the bike it would sit up and then feel like it was falling as you lent over again.
:thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup

"Yeah"just have to agree. Spoke with a mate of mine today that has ridden for ages and near rides everyday and told him its 100% over the last tyre??? Just so comfortable and the feel is just amazing :thumbs :runyay

Hi Dennis - Roadsmarts used to be a big NO as you have heard - but seems they may have addressed the problem from customer feedback....

PS - I am returning to PR2 for the rear this time as I haven't noticed any mileage or performance gains from the PR3 over the 2 (which are both excellent tyres!).
I am in that rotten situation of having a few thousand k's left on the tyre, but a looong road trip - so I have to change it with some reasonable miles left on it again!. :cuss
I have 20,000kms on the current PR3 - but, as I said, it would be too risky to go to Middleton on it to wring out the last 4K kms - so I have called Tyres for Bikes and they are fitting a new PR2 for $259 - a fair price me thinks

Hi Diesel,
I accept that Dunlop have fixed their problems with the Roadsmarts. My understanding of the problem, after some digging around, is that the de-lamination was restricted to front tyres made in France. I believe that all Roadsmarts IIs are now made in Japan so hence the quality of the Roadsmarts should have improved and be consistent. I also accept that Dunlop was very responsive to the public on this issue and have not heard a bad word about Dunlop about how they handled this issue. I cannot say the same about Metzeler nor Brisbane Motorcycle Tyres in Slacks Creek!!
Apart from that, I have a pet aversion to the name of Dunlop. I have bought Ford cars since the mid 90's and have always been keen to get the original Dunlop tyres off as soon as possible. I also replaced the 15" wheels on my Landcruiser at the time to get away from Dunlop tyres (Have to admit, it also looked a lot nicer with decent 16" alloy rims on it). Having been riding with a friend one day and I was right behind him when his front tyre (a Roadsmart) delaminated at high speed, hence one has to think twice! Psychological I know, but that is what the world is made of and why people develop preferences for things for seemingly illogical reasons. Terri was with me at the time and she even winced at the thought of me putting the same brand tyres on my bike.
The same applies to my feelings now about the Metzeler Z6/8. I have a set in my shed at home that have only done about 2000 km and are unlikely to ever find their way back onto my bike. Following Streak's comments about Bridgestone for Honda I am now on BT023. PR3's were my first choice at the time I needed new tyres and they were not readily available at the time according to everybodies friend, Mick, at Brendale.

I'm running Pirelli Angels on the front and a battaxe on the rear which I intend to replace with a Pirelli Angel when due.
I've been very impressed with the Pirelli in both handling and wear so far.
-
Hi Sabie,
I have heard some good comments about the Pirelli. If the reseller of the Metzelers I had was willing to come to the party, I would have gone for the a set of Pirellis from him, though no joy there.
At least I have a few thousand K's now to consider what I might use next. I JUst hope that this set of Bridgestones last longer than the last set. Might even mean that I need to adjust my riding practices.
-
I have tried the original Roadsmarts on the ST11 in ST13 sizes. An ok tyre, worked perfectly ok on hail covered roads so definitely not dodgy! Only average tyre life, around the 10K mark. The Roadsmart 2s may be an improvement.
Interesting comments about the PR2 vs PR3. I think the PR2s are an excellent tyre on the ST11 (proper size on front, ST13 size on rear), it is just the distance I get from them compared to others.
-
hmmm me thinks we should be possibly splitting this into an ST110 & ST1300 conversation, as white they are the same brands at times, the tyres would be different in their own way? am i thinking right?
-

No problem, this isn't a sales pitch, just my finding that as soon as I put the Pirelli angels on there was a marked improvement. However in saying that I've only ever had bridgestones on the ST so that's all I have to compare by.

I got 13,000Km from the Roadsmarts that were on my 1100 when I bought it with no problems, so I have replaced with Roadsmart 2 and hope to get better Kms from them. They seem to be a good tyre for my riding style and use.

Just paid $249.00 for a PR2 rear at Road & River in Geelong.....owner then did 10% of for Ulysses membership and confirms will do same for OzSTOC members.

I have 13K on my BT20's now and I am getting a set of PR3's put on next week for its 12K service. I reckon I probably have 2K left on the 20's but with winter around the corner I reckon its time for a change.
I run the standard 42 psi front and rear and am starting to think that with gear and a pillion and / or camper trailer I should be running 44-46 in the back to account for the extra weight ( like we used to do when we loaded our cars up with gear)
I might trial that on the new set to see how it goes.
Cheers

Just taken front wheel off to change tyre with the PR3 sitting in shed waiting to go on.
Winding back and forth on the wayback didnt reshape the wear as much as i would have liked.
Only rear PR3 will have to wait for the Port Agusta tyre change to wear out.
Scarp hows your rear tyre going?
