Title: speed cameras
Post by: pault on July 31, 2012, 08:13:17 PM
does anybody know much about speed cameras.
that is the mobile things in NSW and qld do the get you coming or going.
what about the fixed? I guess in NSW they get you coming so with no front plate we are OK although i have heard that if you are caught too many times they will plot your riding times and lie in wait.

Bloody good cameras. Some of the best pictures of my bike have been taken by them :rofl Wish they'd come in a bigger size for the wall and they have been professionally Geo tagged :thumbsup

I know that one on the M1 near Greenslopes gets you from the rear, you can usually work this out by the white speed markers on the road, they are 3 lines in each lane separated by about 2 meters.

Went to an open day at the local Cop shop receintly where they demonstrated a mobile speed camera. The hand held and tripod type are instantaneous. Which means they will pull you up straight away and book you. The fixed camera that takes your photo and sends you the 'greeting' card later takes your photo from the rear. The cop said that it was a privacy thing that they are not to take you from the front to prevent your significant other from identfying someone else in the car that shouldn't be there. That is why they always ask for you to identify the driver if it wasn't you driving at the time of the offence. Same with the red light camera. It takes two photos, one when you break into the intersection on the red light and a delayed shot taken to prove you went through the intersection. So you are best to try and stop even if you are into the intersection and don't drive through. This research was collected partially from personal experience.  :law

We are used to getting camera cars parked by the side of the road in nominated spots during the day, but in the last month in Southern NSW they have started to appear anywhere and in the last week infrared night time versions have started popping up.

About two months ago I saw an article saying Victoria were investigating infrared cameras for night time use. Looks like NSW are using them without letting anyone know - Sneaky buggers.

A few years back South Australia had trial with speed cameras located in wheelie bins. Bit sneaky that one but seeing a bin on the side of the road on a non bin collection day must have given it away.....lol

Most of our red light camera's now double as speed cameras now. I think our usual non mobile speed cameras are now contracted out and SAPOL may now only have mobile units in their cars or hand held for the few bikes they have.

Alpha,

Take another look Brock, only three flashers on RH indicator globe at 1.59 minutes.

In SA we have to flash indicators for at least 5 seconds before we can move.

Should we indicate before pulling out?
Odd one this, it's like does a tree make a noise if it falls in the woods and no one sees it.
Indicators are used to warn other road users of your intentions, if there's no one there why bother. That seems sensible I suppose until you pull out in front of that bike you didn't see.
I was taught to use my indicators at all times when needed, irrespective of whether there are other road users. Looking at learner drivers now, I'm not sure that's the instruction given/taught any more. It's much easier to just do it.

I believe that some bridges/overpasses (in Qld at least) have a camera array that will remind you what your rear end looks like if you are departing too rapidly.

Not a road to speed on with the wife on the back then. A tickets bad enough, but the grief from the little lady because you always said that her butt looks good in leather is going to be worse.

Hey Hobs, of course they get you from front on, both 'greeting cards' that I have recieved in the mail were from the front, and in the slowest vehicle I owned (truck)! Have a look up under the overhead bridges on the freeway to Sydney next time you go that way, and smile at the row of cameras looking at you.
