Post by: Sabie on August 18, 2012, 05:34:37 PM
Hi

I've got a little Shih Tzsu dog that goes with me everywhere except when I go for a ride on the Bike.

can anyone suggest a way for him to come too. I've surfed the net and haven't found anything really suitable.

All Suggestions and Links welcome.  :thumb

Thanks

Sabie

Bagster do an animal carry tank bag that could do the trick if your dog is under 8kg

If you fold him neatly he should fit in one of the side pockets  :popcorn

Wasn't that specifically to ruinm it for the legend whose cattle dog rode on the tank bare assed?

If the furball was in a bag, it would be different.

Dunno.  Wouldn't own a dog called Shit Zoo.

I used to date a BMW rider, she has a special cage built for the back of her bike to carry her little dog, it locked on just like a top box, I am sorry I don't have any photos though, but it was a really clever setup

Ok gents back on track, we are trying to solve a problem form Sabie....

This is from the queensland transport website dated 290090:

Carrying an animal

If you are carrying an animal in your vehicle or on your motorcycle, you must be in control of the vehicle or motorcycle at all times.

Question: What is the new rule regarding carrying animals?

If you carry an animal on your lap while driving a car, or on the petrol tank of your motorcycle, you risk being fined $233.

Question: Can I sit an animal on my lap while driving?

No, animals are unpredictable and distract drivers and riders. If a dog moves in the vehicle, or becomes agitated in response to some outside influence, the driver risks losing control of the vehicle or motorcycle.

Question: How should I carry my animal in my vehicle?

So long as the animal is not in your lap (or sitting on the petrol tank of your motorcycle) and not affecting your control of the vehicle, there are no rules prohibiting how you should carry your animal. It is advised however, that you securely restrain your animal using either a restraint or house the animal in a suitable cage or container.

Question: Can I carry my dog on the petrol tank of my motorcycle?

You must not allow an animal to ride or sit on your motorcycle petrol tank. However, if a farmer needs to cross a road to travel to an adjoining private property, a farmer may carry an animal on a motorcycle petrol tank for 500 metres only while traversing the road.

Question: Can I carry a dog or another animal in another place on my motorcycle?

Yes, so long as the dog or animal is secure and the stability of the motorcycle is not affected.

Currently there is a dog on the NSW Black Dog ride (was on telly last night)
It's travelling in the top box, hole cut out so the dog can look around and a clear screen in front.
I've seen them travelling in trailers with a round dome/skylight for them to see.

Expensive but get a second top box and cut a hole either side just big enough for your dog to poke it's head through.

While we were living in Karratha we met a couple a few years ago who took their small dog with them on the back of their bike.  All they did was mount one of those plastic pet carriers on the rear rack.

Try this a uni trailer to carry the dog

http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/deception-bay/motorcycles/uni-go-motorcycle-specially-designed-pet-trailer-/1004683403 (http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/deception-bay/motorcycles/uni-go-motorcycle-specially-designed-pet-trailer-/1004683403)

Barry had a uni trailer on his beemer. I asked him about them and if he liked it, and how it towed. The answer was crap.
Better off with two wheels, they track better.

But he's only the size of a tea pot. I don't think those little old legs would keep up. Not to mention he's almost 17, which is about 90 Y/O in human terms........ He's also blind and he's deaf............. An we still call out for him...............go figure..   :)

Mate, stick him up your jumper.  He'll be safe as you are.  Could be a tiny cushion if you run into something.
On second thoughts, you'd better put an incontinence pad on him, since he's 90 years old.

The pet slings would be illegal because they are the equivalent of carrying the pooch on the tank or your lap where it might distract you.  It's got to be on the pillion seat or rear carrier, according to the law as I read it.

I guess you could sling it over your back.  Can't see how plod could book you for that.  But Poochiekins might not like being unable to see where he's being taken.

You must not allow an animal to ride or sit on your motorcycle petrol tank. However, if a farmer needs to cross a road to travel to an adjoining private property, a farmer may carry an animal on a motorcycle petrol tank for 500 metres only while traversing the road.

Interesting when you consider where the 'petrol tank' is on the ST1100 and various other bikes. A little open to interpretation, maybe they should have said 'You must not allow an animal to ride or sit in front of the rider'.
