Title: Simple helmet farkle - sun-visor via tape
Post by: BigTed on September 12, 2012, 10:04:24 AM
I thought I'd post this simple one as it is a) really functional, b) really easy, and c) really cheap.

Before I posted this, I thought I should check to make sure some smart-a**e hadn't already done it. Well, Biggles seems to the the one. So, I'll make a claim that I thought of this on my own, it's just I'm a bit slower than others.  >:()

Anyway, Biggles' mention of it was burried in a post about a new helmet, so I thought I'd post regardless just to make it more visible. I thought it was kinda obvious, but I've never seen anyone else do it before.

I find myself riding to/from work with the sun low and in my eyes. I don't want to wear sunnies all of the time since some of my trips span dawn/dusk and it's just too dark. So, this simple trick will help...

Simple:
- clean visor first
- cut (don't snap) electrical tape - colour of your choosing
- apply to top edge of the visor (on the outside so that the seal isn't affected). You could put a couple of rows if you wanted, but just 1 was fine for me.

Of course, you need to decide which colour. I've gone with black - not  to colour coordinate with the helmet, but to ensure my helmet can go as fast as the bike, being the fastest colour.

I second that Rob - my factory 'sun visor' blew off the helmet, and tended to catch the wind when doing speeds 'at or around' the national speed limit...        :whistle

And riding East with the early morning sun in my eyes from Silverton through Broken Hill - Wilcannia - Cobar - Nyngan ( http://goo.gl/maps/eh57w (http://goo.gl/maps/eh57w) ), I stopped to apply your magical sun glare remedy (electrical tape) as there were certainly plenty of Roos, Emus and Goats along that route to watch out for.       :crazy

Worked a charm!     :grin

Thanks for posting.

Cheers, Diesel

Ahhhh some are slow :rofl

Get yourself some GAFFA Tape. Get yourself a TEXTA.
Now put your helmet on. Now put the visor down and place your finger on it and move it up till it just goes out of sight. "Simple" now make a mark with the Texta where your finger went out of site.
Now that's the bottom  of the tape :thumb Clean the visor and stick it on. You will have to trim the tape from the top of the Visor probably or put a bit extra on, so just trim it with a Stanley Blade
That tape on the visor is just the best for riding into the sun.
I have only had tape on my Full Face Helmets since the 80's and Gaffa tape is the best

Yeah I did this one many years ago as well. HOWEVER. I now have the SUPERVISOR from Pete's little on-line side-line and I love it. The tape is good in that it will take the sun out of your vision, but the SUPERVISOR actually puts shade on the visor which increases visibility dramatically. Have had it for a couple of years and it has never 'blown-off' as I usually ride with the visor up if the sun is not in my eyes.
Check out Pete's catalogue in the ST Shop category.
Cheers.
Skip.

Looks trendy, but tape has always worked for me but then again I havn't been riding a bike for 59 years and owned 40 bikes. I've only been riding since 1974, riding 6 out of 7 in that time and owned 6 registered motorcycles so I'm still learning

Mate never seen one before but when you mentioned it I found their website and took a look. Looks like a visor that sits inside you helmet, far better than the outside crap visors me thinks and looks about the same width as tape? No good for me as tape has worked for many years without a problem but for some may be just the ducks nuts/guts/buts quack quack quack

i love mine just gr8

true
you can use it like a visor   to shield your eye's
you can use it sunglasses   to look THROUGH

tapes reduce your vision, cause you CANT look through it

look at mine at Inverell

So after reading the WEBBikeworld read up I thinks I should go and check em out. So I puts in my postcode to fine my nearest dealer and
"Postcode search results"
There is no stockist located within 100kms of 4220.
So theirs no where to check em out within a Hundred kays of the Gold Coast?
Still looking

"Yeah" to friggin Pommy Land. The only place I could fine em was in Pommy Land for 20pound + postage????????. So I reckon $50.00 would get that strip of plastic to your door.
Theirs a heap of strips on a roll of tape, and I know the tape works :thumb
If you read the write ups the Sunax may not fit your helmet??????. Klick the Link to buy one.

I have an internal dark visor, that can be flipped out of the way at night or darker times. Thats a better option I think.

I'm with Brock, I have a HJC IS-16 with the internal flip down sun visor.  It works a treat for our weather here, especially wet season when you can go from almost night time darkness under clouds to blinding sunlight in the space of a couple of minutes.

My Shark Evoline has the internal visor and it is great...but for those without this feature why not simply wear sunnies?

Hi Whizz,

I bought my helmet because of the visor, simply because in wet season conditions, sunnies are not practical.

Wendy, I must admit the visor was a big plus point for me too, along with the flip-front, but the noise????!!!!! :well

Terry, 4220 to Springwood Suzuki, = 72kms, I've told you a million times don't exaggerate!

Even with tape, I still wear sunnies - they protect you from general glare, bugs, etc. The tape protects you from sunlight directly into the eyes.

It's high enough up that it doesn't come into your normal line of sight, but low enough that a dip of the helmet can hide the sun. It's no different to a car's sun-visor - you adjust it accordingly. If I dipped it low enough that I couldn't see the car in front of me I think I'd have my head between legs  >:() . So the concern of not being able to see through it is a non-starter. I'm not sure about the fitted visors though - I'm not sure how far down they go, but I imagine they wouldn't be that different.

My Shark Evoline that I just gave away had one of the internal visor things that I never used. Sat too low and was just not rite.
Tape worked heaps better

I tried the tape on the visor trick on the ride to Inverell. :blu13
It did take a bit of getting used to not being able to scan the sky for crashing aircraft :eek but apart from that it works well :grin :thumb

Thanks for the tip Rob :hatwave

Cheers
