I have these fitted to my St1300 , one on each fork leg and my Landcruiser on the nudge bar, I think they work as some early mornings I have been out on the highway and seen the Roos & wallabys move away as they are just in spot light sight. Has anyone else used them with any success ?

Over the years I have had a few sets on my bike but it became quite obvious early???? I purchased the African models and not the Australian ones :think1
See the pairs I have had on the bike kept all the Elephants, Giraffes, Lions and Hippos away, but the good old Roo loved em. Loved em that much that last year one of em kissed my bike :-[
When I was up North on the mines, seen a few models from the plastic pairs, to the zillion dollar electronic jobs but all of em were the African models and they all kept away the animals previously described but none kept the Roos from being bit by bike, cars, trucks and road trains.

There is actually some research that has been done by one of the universities into these devices and other deterrents to animal collisions

each to their own, read the research, what there is of it, and make up your own mind on what you think fits your style of riding and what measures you think appropriate.

I think the research is flawed as most vehicle/animal incidents are not reported excepting motorcycles, which usually come off worse. I lived in Port hedland for 20yrs, as a self employed electrical and comms contractor, visited numerous minesites and averaged around 6 roos per year. The only thing which slowed them were a set of Hella Predator HID's on the Patrol, the roos would sqat until I passed, I know because my mate who followed me continually complained about them. The problem with the Predators was I needed a set of basic halogen driving lights to go down to with oncoming traffic as I had to dip about 5k's away.

Mate the Australian models work :thumb Its those bloody African ones that don't keep the Roos away
Real sad that they don't make ones that stop Camels and Horses from getting in the way. My ladies friend in her early years was killed when a horse was hit by the car and the horse came through the windscreen and kicked her to death.
On the mines and such in NT they have special Roo bars on the 4wd's to prevent Horses and Camels coming through the windscreen a mate tells me???

My experience is that the roo whisles only make the roo stop and look for whats making the noise. Stupid curios bastards they is...

I can't comprehensively and scientifically confirm this.... but out on the country roads - I noticed that when I attached my two shoo-roo plasticy crappy whistles - the birds on the side of the road seemed to take flight when I was 150m away instead of right next to them - this seemed to clear the road sooner for me. Could be co-incidence - but I do a lot of early morning riding when the birds are feeding from the previous night's game of 'road train bowling' and considering I have only hit 1 bird - that is a strike rate of 1 in 2 million! Pretty good.

Haven't hit a roo yet either (madly touches wood). I don't see many of them. Could be the roo whistles - dunno - but they'll always be on my bike (kind like ABS) - just in case.

Decided I'm a scientist and know everything about all that's not important soooooooo ?????
I have just figured out that these SHOO ROO things work by air traveling through them which makes a noise that us humans can't hear to know if their working or not :rofl
Kind alike spending a few hundred on a pro and not knowing that you done the deed, but she says you did :crackup :crackup :crackup :crackup :crackup :crackup :crackup
So if the airs traveling through to make the noise doesn't that mean that the noise is traveling with it????? Like its traveling out the back and not forward, like the noise from the exhaust????
Ahhhhhhhh wind does make noise change direction. You know??? wind blowing from the traffic you can hear it, wind blowing into the traffic, just like wind blowing through a SHOO Roo can't hear traffic

I agree Terry,
surely the noise is being left down the road behind you. I've got them on my Land Rover but it didn't stop a roo causing $1,000 damage to it (it would have been a lot more if it wasn't for the Bull-Bar which took the impact).

Maybe. If you're exceeding the speed of sound!
The passage of the air through the orifice generates a sonic wave that propagates in every direction, including ahead of you.
I'm not saying it's effective. I'm just noting the physics of sound behaviour.

I'm sure you're right mate..........I've never heard of anyone with sho roos fitted being hit by a roo from behind!
Perhaps we should try fitting them backwards then the sound might travel in the forward direction!! :rofl

Get the ones that make the sound of a 303 rifle. Seems to work when roo shooting.

This subject has/is been discussed on nearly every forum out there in some form.
I can't remember now where I read what springs to mind but it goes like this.
The poster is a train driver in the States. He is driving a machine that makes more noise than any other machine probably, it has a horn fitted capable of waking the dead and a light up front that would cause serious injury if you stood in it's beam any closer than ten foot. Yet he has a tally into the hundreds of animals of all kinds, birds of every type and a few too many people that he has hit with his locomotive.
As he says, if dumb animals walk out in front of that monster do you really think a bit of a whistle fastened to your motor is going to have any effect.
We have deer over here that do take out the odd rider. I ride in deer country often. Having read the above I won't be screwing a whistle to my bike. And believe me if there's an excuse for an extra bit of flash on the bike I will take it....

That sounds like a Mike Turley from ST Owners tale.
The supposed effect of the Shoo Roo type whistles is not the volume of the sound but the pitch. As I understand it, the ultra-sonic whistle is detectable by animals and deters them from approaching.
Do with that what you will.
