Title: Introducing Myself
Post by: quattro0418 on November 04, 2012, 04:43:39 AM
 Hi,
My name is Lachlan and I live at Beecroft in NSW. I run my own business as a Locksmith and have recently purchased a second hand ST1100 police version. I pick it up today Sunday 4/11/12. Not knowing a lot about these bikes other than its touring rep I started to research them and ended up discovering this site. I like riding but  don't have a lot of contacts with fellow bike enthusiasts my age group, 55. If you are keen for a weekend spin e-mail me.

Regards

Hi Deisel,

Thanks for the message. Yes I am getting the miles up and am having a great time on the ST1100. It is as much fun as I had as a kid when I first started riding. I met quite a few of the guys and girls on the grey gum ride and they are a great bunch. I am looking forward to many more rides. If anyone local to Beecroft is interested in night or weekend rides just give me a call on 0418967776. I am always up for a ride. I am a qualified locksmith so if any of the members need padlocks or the like let me know and I will supply parts at cost.

Kind regards

Hi sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Been flat out like a lizard drinkin. It is a 2002 model and it absolutely flies. It is hard to resist giving her a squirt every now and then. The overall condition is pretty good although it has a few Ks up. It now lives in the basement with the other toys from my childhood. Will probably go for a spin out to Windsor this Saturday for lunch.

If you feel like sharing a ride (and sometimes a lone ride is what you are after) just post up in the NSW/ACT area that you are going somewhere, the time and if anyone else might like to join in. Sometimes others will go, other times not.  No big deal for a casual ride.

Enjoy the last of the ST1100s  :wht11 (I have the 96 police model myself, only 179,000kms)

Hi all,

Bad news I am afraid. Yesterday I rolled the ST1100 P out and started her up to warm up the movey bits whilst I locked the garage and to my dismay when I approached to get on I noticed a pool of green liquid underneath her. Oh dear. I had only had her serviced and tuned at Castle hill Motorcycles a couple weeks ago if that. Talk about surprised. I shut her down and started to trace where the fluid was coming from. I have taken the lower shroud off and the upper tank cover but still can't see where the fluid is originating from. It appears to be running from high up down the front of the motor from what I can see so far. The bike has around 130000Ks up. I don't know where the drain plug is located for the coolant as this was supposed to have been replaced during service and I wanted to check to make sure the apprentice had tightened it up. Any ideas or suggestions would be more than welcome at this stage as I don't know whether to continue removing the fairings and investigate further or just put it back together and take it to a Honda dealer. I have worked on all my own bikes and know my way around a spanner but do not know the layout of the ST.

There is a drain on left side of radiator. Possible locations for leaks are around the thermostat housing at top right of engine under the tool box, under the carbs, or worst case the water pump itself. All the side fairings have to come off to check any of these.

Mine did a similar thing. The coolant drain plug is on the lower left of the radiator (when on the bike).  Worth asking what the shop actually did, as there is a coolant drain bolt on the engine block that supposedly you should undo, but it is a pain to get to.

It might be just bad luck, as one of the hoses under the carbs may have leaked (sometimes just doing up the clamps fixes it), or like mine one of the alloy elbows under the carbs has cracked.  During a standard coolant change none of the hoses or elbows under the carbs would have been looked at.  At 130,000kms it would be best to replace the hoses under the carbs and the allow elbows. The smaller bypass hose on mine had become really brittle, and would have failed sometime.  Carb removal is not that hard, but may be daunting depending on your level of confidence.

One think to check is the radiator cap (top right of the radiator under the right side pocket) as I have had a perished radiator cap seal, and the overflow hose that goes to the coolant overflow bottle is well known to crack and leak.

And just to put things in perspective, I have had cars with far more coolant loss, thermostat hoses going etc problems than the ST11.

Thanks Stevo and Saaz,

I appreciate the information it has certainly boosted my confidence. I will remove the fairings and carbs and investigate and replace the suggested parts. I really love this bike and boy did I feel it when my ride went pear shaped. I got onto a web site with some schematics of parts for the ST's and they are also very helpfull. I will keep you posted and let you know if anything unusual crops up as I work through the problem.

Thanks guys

I should also have mentioned that the large hoses under the carbs can be replaced with heater hose. The smaller bypass hose can be replaced with high pressure EFI hose that is also rated for hot use (it seems to be blue).  The hoses that go onto the radiator are best bought from honda as it is hard to match the curves and size, but they need not be done yet (unless one is split of course!) as they will need to be removed when doing the timing belt at 155,000kms so may as well fit new hoses then as they have to be removed, and really do stick on.

Good luck.

Hi Saaz

Thanks for the update. The timing belt was done apparently 7000Ks ago so the last owner told me.

Hi all,

Well I have stripped the fairings off and had a look and it appears as though the fluid is leaking from the base area of the cylinders on the left bank, sitting on the bike, towards the front of the bike which appears to be the water pump housing. There is a slightly audible ticking sound emanating from that area also.I have placed an extendable cable light into the areas around the base of the carbs and the radiator where the hoses join but can't see any coolant leaking above that area on the block towards the front left base. The coolant only leaks when the motor is running after a couple of minutes and dribbles out of an area between what appears to be a black rubber gasket and an alloy block then down the left side front of the motor. The next step I think is to get a repair manual and see what schematics are in there relating to the water pump etc.

The water pump is driven off the timing belt, so hope they at least spun it a bit to see if the bearings were ok.  Usually they might need replacing every second timing belt (well I hope so for my sake)  Over tensioning the timing belt might put stress on it, but if the Honda procedure was followed that is very unlikely.

If you are lucky, it may be a leak around the water pipe (assembly 5 in this) which has a seal
http://www.ronayers.com/Fiche/TypeID/26/Type/Motorcycle/MakeID/1/Make/Honda/YearID/37/Year/1996/ModelID/7255/Model/ST1100A/GroupID/315167/Group/WATER_PIPE_-_96-98 (http://www.ronayers.com/Fiche/TypeID/26/Type/Motorcycle/MakeID/1/Make/Honda/YearID/37/Year/1996/ModelID/7255/Model/ST1100A/GroupID/315167/Group/WATER_PIPE_-_96-98)

The water pump it self is here http://www.ronayers.com/Fiche/TypeID/26/Type/Motorcycle/MakeID/1/Make/Honda/YearID/37/Year/1996/ModelID/7255/Model/ST1100A/GroupID/315134/Group/WATER_PUMP (http://www.ronayers.com/Fiche/TypeID/26/Type/Motorcycle/MakeID/1/Make/Honda/YearID/37/Year/1996/ModelID/7255/Model/ST1100A/GroupID/315134/Group/WATER_PUMP)

One way to see where the leak is to pressurise the cooling system a little bit without the bike running, and see where the leak is from.  If the timing belt was done, the bottom radiator hose would have to have been removed from the radiator. I hope they took care doing that and did not cause a leak by pulling on the hose.

Let us know how you get on. I will be away from Wednesday on, but may have internet access at the various places we are staying.

Hi All,

Well Saaz I am still waiting for the workshop manual to arrive. I am pretty sure it is the water pump leaking. Fluid is leaking from a relief hole in the alloy on the side of the motor I previously described. I made some enquiries about a replacement water pump at my local Honda dealer. I left the enquiry with him in the morning and he rang back that afternoon and told me that all St parts for the 1100 are on back order. So rather than wait for parts now and in the future I sourced a Stat write off ST1100 with 60000 Ks from a wrecker and will strip the pump off it to repair mine. My motor has 120000Ks but is running really well. The wreck motor will be a good source of immediate parts I think. All I need now is for the manual to turn up and I will study that and then go ahead and replace the pump. Can't wait to get it done I really miss riding my bike.

Hi All,

Well the motor I got is an early version 92 and my bike is a 2002. The water pump assembly is slightly different on the earlier version. It has two pipes leading to the oil filter base which appears to be an oil cooler. I am wondering if I can transplant the oil cooler base plate to my bike and get away with using the water pump that way. Or simply change motors. Any suggestions?

Been there done the water pump. I've only ever heard of one guy refurbishing the pump apparently it requires a fair bit of work and some skill to do so as the pump is pressed into the plate it's mounted on and the shaft is welded or flanged meaning it has to be ground off then rewelded. I could not source a pump through Honda Australia and they said they couldn't get them out of Japan, I ended up getting it from the States.. cost about the same as here with the freight.

It can be a bit of a trial to change and unless you're reasonably mechanically minded it may be best to get someones help. I'm not afraid to get stuck in and I managed to get it done without any hitches  however it did involve considerable swearing and several beers.   :beer

Hi Bikebear,

I have been busy making other plans and life is happening. Funny that sounds familiar. Anyway. Thanks for the advice. I have aquired a donor ST1100 with 60,000Ks on the clock. I have been studying the relevant UTubes and Schematics Brock sent through and advice from Saaz so feel confident in replacing the pump. What the plan will be is to strip my bike first just to make sure it is in fact the pump and if so take the pump off the donor and fit it to my bike. I would like to start that today, Monday, but time is getting away and living on my own now, the partner discovered the divorcee advisory team, there is a few more tasks, like housework and feeding pets etc that takes a little time.
So if not today definately tomorrow will be a start. I can't wait to go for a spin when its done.
