I have sad memories of the Pan weave from the Police in the UK that saw the whole UK fleet of Police Pan European ST1300's being decommissioned, many mothballed in warehouses at a cost of millions.
If you have never experienced the weave watch the short video and see it for yourself. Pretty off putting when riding at over 120 mph!

To ponder a silly question, and never seen the pan weave, I have high speeds on the Yamaha FZ1 I owned when I was younger and dumber than I am now, anything over 200km/hour is dear life on Most bikes anyway....
Mind you if your doing those kind of speeds on a regular basis here in OZ I am sure you won't be riding to long anyway lol :rofl

Natman, the video won't play, wanna try again?!

Click the link under the picture it will take you to the video page.

Really. Is that it? Has any of the Aussie crew experienced the 'Pan Weave" ? That did not look like 130mph. I'm not in the habit of exceeding the legal limit, but I have had lapses of responsibility when I have, reaching these type of speeds and have had no indication that the ST is anything but stable. High speeds aren't why I now own an ST.
Interested to hear Aussie experiences although it wouldn't change my mind about owning the 1300.
Cheers .
Skip.

It doesn't look that bad but if you ride at 130mph with only one hand on the bars what do you expect? :(
-
It's real. That's all I'm saying.
-
I thought the weave on the police spec bike was traced to poor weight distribution with all the police extra's or have i got that wrong?
The guy in the video took one hand off the bars a lot of bikes will weave at 130mph when your not holding on.

The "Pan Weave" was attributed to the tyres mainly. This is the reason that most Aussie forces didn't go with the ST to start with and picked up the FJR mainly as an interim bike, but now tending to keep them also.
Honda presented the ST to Oz police with the same tyres and wouldn't remove the 130kmh speed limit on the police model. This is why they failed, along with a few other litle problems which we weren't told about. The weight distribution was the reason for the 130kph limit also apparently.
Tey have now changed the problems and there doesn't appear to be any more issues here.

So what tyres were attributed to contributing to the problem Tack?

I don't go fast enough to get it and never will unless you push me over a pretty big cliff...........

I read an article recently that attributed the weave to the screen design, they placed a slightly wider screen on a test bike which solved the problem. This was on the internet, if I can find it I'll post it.

Don't know sorry bloke they wouldn't tell us that either, but I am sure it would be available somewhere. I do work for the guberment you know so mushroom has a meaning like a brother. I also wasn't up for replacement any time soon so it wasn't worrying me back then.
We were only told that this was a main reason for the knock back. We only found out about the 130kmh limit on the ST1100 during the Coroner's recommendations after Dave Sheen's death in Brisbane. This is when they started looking at the ST and what they had to offer. Europe actually had one or two coppers killed from the weave. The other main reason was also that the ST1300 couldn't offer ABS with other required electronics. Other makes run dual battery systems.

WA Police replaced their ST1100's with 1300's and as of December 2011 had 45 on the road mainly for freeway duties.

Most Aussie forces did the same as soon as Honda changed the nominated problems. We have one in our office and numerous throughout the state.

I've had pan weave, on my 1100 a few times.
First time on the open road with no one around me, doing about 120k. It started when I went off throttle, It was a gusty day so I put it down to the wind. Scared the sh!t out of me, thought I'd blown a tyre.
Two other times have been overtaking bigger vehicles such as trucks or busses. Both times the overtake was around 150k (by the time I was past), there was large disturbance in the air as I passed them. The weave started as I went off throttle. A touch on the rear brake settle things down.
I think my bigger Givi top box (fits 2 helmets) is the cause becasue of airflow vortexes. Any which way the specs inside do say not to exceed 120k, for a reason :grin
Haven't tried to replicate the issue without the box, the weave is something to avoid. I rarely exceed the limit anyway.

Later ST13s supposedly had an upgraded swingarm pivot, but the weave seems to be something that happens or it doesn't. Plenty of owners have tried out some high speeds just to see...
On the ST11 I notice when I have the top box on (the smaller Givi) that it catches the wind a bit more and makes the wake from some trucks a bit more noticeable. If I left it on all the time I probably would not notice anything, or had a pillion on to add to the bikes weight to stabilise it.

I notice the same on mine but at the point where the air turbulence meets behind the trailer. Not much difference either with a large top case (on all the time), pillion or with my trailer on so with that in mind I tend to hang back a little until it's safe to pass

I rode 4000kms on the Southern Cross run with a large square RJays pack on the back of my bike and the only time I felt any weave was when I had a strong side wind. I got up to 180kmh with this setup and it made no difference, the bike was rock solid at any speed.

Before I bought my ST1300 I did a fair amount of research on the "weave" and I was led to believe that it was caused at high speeds where there was a shift in the C of G due to heavily loading the rear end of the motorcycle. The "weave" was mainly a problem in STP's due to the weight of radios and equipment carried and has been virtually eliminated by Honda using a modified rear shock in the "P" model.
We did trial the ST1300P in the NSWPF but honda wouldn't guarantee the integrity of the pannier system at speeds above 130 km/h.
I have read the usual stuff re civilians complaining of the same problem in their ST's, no doubt its happened but I reckon the "weave" is often mistaken for the bike misbehaving in dirty air, cross wind wallows and the like. From what I understand the "weave" is quite violent and will spit an experienced rider off. I don't think that video represents a true weave. Hell.....I can remember doing my initial training on K100LTP's, flat out with a similiar or worse wallow!

I have long thought that many are mixing up getting stuck in turbulent air, and high speed induced oscillations. The best way to deal with turbulence is to relax, and let the bike look after its self to a large degree while you endeavour to get in to clean air.
