Title: Thinking about a 1300, Need Advice
Post by: Streak on November 18, 2012, 05:08:17 PM
Well after much conversation and thoughts, I am considering a Honda ST1300......now don't everyone fall over in shock....but the thought it there, and she who controls the bank balance is open to the idea....

So hit me with some advice, what in your opinions is my ST1100 worth?

Specs:

1996 Honda ST1100, Black, 79,000km
Dash Shelf with 3 ram mount points
Top Box & Panniers
Custom Seat with custom wool seat cover
Bagster Tank Cover, 12V socket in left hand pocket
New Tyres, 6 months Rego
Paint 99% Perfect, barely a mark on her
Fully Serviced, new rear shock, highway wings.
1 inch Risers, New Xenon H4 Bulbs
(http://i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd499/ozstoc/86450932-EF80-4301-B69F-B0FA318290C5-13049-0000084F39C8C766.jpg)

I am thinking of spending about $10,000 on the ST1300, but in my fussy thoughts, i would want something with a top box with the pillion back rest, with around 90,000km or under on the clock, not sure what age of 1300 i would get for 10k, but i would be looking for something with a few extras....i am thinking maybe a black one, but i am not sure when they started making them in black

but i want some advice from the group, and as i said i am thinking about it, not running out this very second, lol and I know the 1100 riders will say best advice is not to sell it, but hey it is worth having a look...

cheers

Streak

So take the advise and stick with the 1100! How much more power do you need to lose your license? Now you have the 1100 set up, why buy another one and go through all the dramas again? Don't be blinded by all the shiney bits on the 1300, we all get to the same place.

Having just been through this exact process of 1100 to 1300 I know what your thinking, put aside the whole the 1100 is worth what you can get for it.....I would suggest either side of $7,000.....$10,000 will be a stretch but not impossible for 1300, a 2004 with 30 k's sold at Grafton for $10,500 last week.

Found when I was looking a black 2009 with under 20'ks at Coffs, the owner will let it go for $14,500 if you can stretch the budget, still for sale to......

Cheers

I got my 2004 1300, with all the boxes but otherwise standard in January of this year for a fraction over $10K

I found it took 6 months to sell my ST11 on the 'net and in the Courier Mail.  It's much less painful to just trade it.
You might be lucky.
The trouble is, you won't get what it's really worth with all the improvements.  People will only pay for the basic bike and take the farkles off you for free.  Ditto the dealers.
Unless the ST11 is driving you nuts, don't waste money chasing some thought that the ST13 is way better.
OK, it has more sporty looks, but as Steveo says, you can't use the extra power.
The ST11s are bullet-proof and basically easier to service.  You don't want to try to put oil in an ST13's tiny orifice without an even tinier funnel.

Well just thinking of upgrading, more room for Teela, we are in a position that we can upgrade :)

Streak,

After having ridden the ST1300 at work for a couple of days, and having a similar set up to yourself with customised seat etc, I can tell you now that I wasn't really impressed enough to upgrade from my ST11 and she has 120 000 on the clock.

Unless you really need to upgrade for a reason, stick with the ST1100 mate.

PS:  If you do upgrade how much do you want for the Bagster cover? :grin

I hate to say it, But an ST that is heavily farkled is like a house with gold taps. in the end its a house (or an ST). The value of the extras is only there for some one that wants them. So basically, you have an Old bike with low Ks. I'm being harsh, I know.
Title: Re: Thinking about a 1300, Need Advice
Post by: saaz on November 18, 2012, 08:52:49 PM
If you feel like it and can, why not.  Extras are discounted 50 to 100% as buyers look to get the best deal, and it is a buyers market.  So you might be looking at an ST13 with not too many less kms

Post by: tj189 on November 18, 2012, 09:13:03 PM
I removed all the extras that I could off the bike prior to trading it in.  Some you can use on the new one some you can sell off to others.  do like the Nike advertisement.......

Well the other school of thought is spend the money on the bike I have.

Put the bike through a complete head to toe service get every nut and bolt checked
Bagster tank bag
Balance the carbs
Valve clearance
Put on cruise control
Put on my HID driving lights
Upgrade both Teelas and my riding gear

And we will be sorted for years to come....

Sighs I don't know

That sounds like a far more sensible route...just think of the farkles you could get for that sort of money???????

I think I would prefer a fullt optioned up ST11 rather than a standard ST13. Just factor in how much extra you might need to spend on the ST13.  There is a nice one up in Caboolture with heaps of HID lights etc :)

I am sorry to say this, but the Wing will go as fast as you want on public roads, even compared to the ST11/13. When I test rode one at the Snowyride I was going no slower than I would have on my bike.

I have only done 178K on my ST11.

Pricing Cruise Control (happy for suggestions on what to use)

Replacing the Front Forks springs (not sure if i do myself or get the shop to do it)

Cruise Control.........only if I had the available cash at $920........http://www.mccruise.com/collections/honda/products/12 (http://www.mccruise.com/collections/honda/products/12) .....your local Honda Dealer is on the fitting list.

Front Forks........I don't have issues with mine but you have a progressive rear shock so you may as well upgrade the front as well.

Get the dealer to change the springs while they have the caps out changing the oil. It is not an easy job to do on your own. I found the Ikon brand ok.

Wise decision Streak!

I don't think the ST1300 is a huge evolutionary step over the ST1100.  They are both nice bikes but I think the ST1100 still holds its own as a comfortable and reliable big bore tourer.  There's heaps of high mileage 1100's around and they'll probably still be going strong even when the sun burns out!  :thumb

Hi Graham,
I think this thread if heavily loaded to the pro 1100 lobby and probably giving you a bit of a one eyed response to your original post. I thought I should try to add a bit of balance to the debate. It is understandable that the 1100 riders get defensive at the thought of one of their number tranferring out to "big brother" and will do their darndest to convince you to stay. In their arguements however, is a lot of implied critisism to the magnificent 1300 that just can't be ignored. Firstly, I have never ridden a 1100 so won't go there in direct comparisons. I only know that lots of people love them so they must be a good bike! (albeit getting a bit long in the tooth!!). As far the 1300 is concerned, Ros and I couldn't be happier with our 08, particularly as a 2up bike. We have done heaps of long tours on it (up to 6000k over 3 weeks) and would not change it for quids (showing my age now!). We are planning to ride it 15000k+ next year around Oz over 3 months. It is still fitted with the original seat and it is fine. I don't know what is the matter with these wooses who complain about the 1300 seat. Are they bikers or not!. If they want a softer seat, sit in a car! otherwise enjoy the ride and suck up the ocassional numb bum. If I have one thing I can say about the 1300 over the 1100 it is that I believe the 1300 is a better all round 2up tourer. The luggage capacity is better and the added power certainly does come in handy doing quick O/T manouvers when 2 up and fully loaded. The electric windscreen and heated grips (a must!) are also a great boon on long tours. I know this will attract a howl of protests from our little brothers, but that's my opinion for what it is worth. For my money, forget the major refit of your 1100 and keep looking for the good low mileage 1300 (preferable 08+). They are out there and you won't be sorry.
Cheers

you know what i am really impressed with, is that both sides of the group have been commenting here, and it is all based on solid discussion, experience and facts, i have learnt quite a bit about both bikes in the last week.

the person who actually convinced me to keep the ST1100 was my sister who simply said, "why change, you love that bike"

It looks like i will spend around $2,000 to do what I want to do, I am looking forward to showing you all the results, i am trying to find a new screen....

Just an update, you will all will be surprised, my local honda shop Toowoomba honda gave me some fantastic pricing,

I bought 2 sets of tip over covers for my ST1100 and they cost me $53 a set after our group discount.

I also picked up my bagster Minea tank bag for $198 after our group discount (I forgot I ordered one from them, the one I ordered from overseas has cost me $220 with postage, so I will have a spare tank bag to sell)

I am picking my Shark Evoline 3 up on Saturday for $549 after our group discount, ( can get cheaper overseas, but warranty is a lot simpler here)

They have really stepped out to help me, and are really supportive of the group, if you call them talk to David in spares, he is a very nice chap, and Andrewcwho runs the workshop is old school and does not talk crap.

Streak, a word of caution with the Evoline. make sure that the two little screws in the sides of the helmet are secured with either a very small drop of nail polish, or some other screw grip (like Loctite), because so far I've had both fall out on me. One after about 4 months...then waited nearly 5 weeks for a replacement which I fitted with nail polish, then the other fell out about 6 weeks ago...still waiting for the replacement to turn up!!!

I've gone for a white helmet and jacket.  The difference is very noticable at this time of year up here.

Hmm point taken, maybe the storm trooper look is the way to go...

I can't believe that no bike shop I visited had a light coloured jacket in stock. Some said they could get one, others weren't sure. Are you kidding !!!! I was shocked. Racks of black ones. Umm. Coming into summer in Brisbane. Just need to get out on the road and test my new purchase.

I have ordered the Storm Trooper Evoline 3 instead of the Optimus Prime version

Evoline 3 is high on the list for my next helmet in either white or silver. Unfortunately no one here carries them in stock so I have to order one to see if it will fit, and if it doesn't I'd have to order the next size up/down. Townsville guys do you know if anyone there carries them in stock?

I have just spoken with Bernie who owns Rising Sun Honda, he stocks the Evoline 3, he said go in, and ask for him by name (Bernie), identify yourself from us and he will fix you up with a discount.

They do carry the Evoline 3 in stock, with a variety of sizes, just inside the spare parts area on the right as you go through the doors from new bikes.

If Bernie isn't available, ask for Cher (his daughter) as she is a lot prettier than Bernie, and he will have probably forgotten about the phone call by now anyway.  :grin
