Title: Check this temperature today....
Post by: Diesel on November 14, 2011, 09:36:25 PM
Went for a great ride today, as I had the day off, and stopped for lunch at the pub.

After I left the pub, temps stayed 35-36* all arvo and peaked at this.....

Still had all the gear on too, so it was like an oven!

It took quite a few beers to put the fire out when I got home   :-)

Not to mention the heat that comes back off the heads of these ST1300s!  I find I'm riding with the jacket open these days (when I'm not being bad and going squid around town).

Damm..........that's hot old buddy!!     I haven't ridden in such hot weather for a few years now, and can't say I miss it.
Twenty degrees here in Nubeena right at the moment. We're looking at getting in heaps of riding over the summer months. The summer sun in Tassie is extremly hot..........it's a burning heat, much hotter than Queensland sun believe it or not, I'm told it's due to a hole in the ozone layer............but we don't have any humidity!
It's only hot when you're in the sun................once you're in the shade it's not too bad at all.

Our summer days are very long, with daylight saving it doesn't start getting dark until after 9.00pm....so lots of nice long rides coming up.....yahoo!

I really feel for you D, but glad it was you and not me :).
On a more serious note, how much cooler is it riding with the blades than without?

Sorry Couch, but I had to laugh. lol - it's reminiscent of Jo or Flo Bjelke-Petersen saying how it'd fade the curtains with all the
extra daylight

Mate that bugger all as out here it reaches the fifty. Got me one of those DriRider jobs with the Camelback in em, and have ridden when its forty plus and could do it all day. Got me a pair of Olympic air pants as well and with a T-shirt under the jacket and a pair of jocks under the pants the jobs right. When it makes fifty I'll let you know if its still all good

Bummer when temps are in 30's.
Sympathise with you Terry - across Broken Hill through to abt Goondiwindi the temp was in the low to mid 40's last week.
Nyngan was 22 at 5.30am.
Temp inside helmet was an issue. Local lady at Narrabri did a great job putting a black window tint screen across
the top of an already tinted visor and it cut the heat and the glare from the sky. seemed 10 degrees cooler.

What is the thoughts on the mesh jackets? I just purchased a dri rider Climate Control. Has the cold weather liner and a separate waterproof liner too - havent had to ride in the rain yet... I was riding in 32 last week and was very comfortable.

Hi Homestead - check out this article on cooling the body with airflow....

Why Mesh Riding Suits Don't Work in Extreme Conditions

Human bodies exchange heat with their surroundings in four primary ways:
convection, conduction, radiation, and evaporative cooling (from
perspiration).
When ambient temperatures are below the body's normal temperature of 98.6°F,
all of these pathways can provide cooling. The higher the windspeed, the
more cooling there is from convection. But when ambient temperatures rise
above 98.6°F, only evaporative cooling can work. More importantly, too much
wind becomes a bad thing. There is a limit to our body's perspiration rate
and when the wind speed uses up all of the available perspiration, more wind
increases convective HEATING. This is the opposite of "Wind Chill". I
found an interesting article on this effect at:
http://www.zunis.org/at_least_theres_a_breeze.htm

What this means is that you do NOT want to maximize the wind against your
skin when the temperature gets extreme. Mesh suits, or wearing just a
lightweight shirt, are NOT the right approach. You will actually stay
cooler
with a conventional suit with the vents adjusted so there is a more moderate
air flow across your skin.

There is some special apparel you get for motorbikes where you wet the inner layer (spandex like material), put it on, and then are set to ride in extreme temps for hours - then re-wet it again at the next stop. I can't find the link, but there was a youtube vid gettin round.

Hope this helps.

Cheers, Diesel

There's another alternative Diesel...........move to Tassie mate.................then you'll never have to worry about riding in the heat again!!

Thanks Diesel... not sure about me in spandex though... the mind boggles! I do remem ber reading about the "wet suits" now tghat you mention it...

Hey Couch "then you'll never have to worry about riding in the heat again" = that's why I left Tassie last year - after 13 hears in the wet and cold, my waterproof clothing kept wearing out! I used to live in Leslie Vale on the way to the Huon Valley
Title: Re: Check this temperature today....

The Huon Valley's a very cold area mate............much colder than the Tasman Peninsula where I live.

Are you aware that Hobart is actually the second driest city in Oz??...........I lived in Brisbane for 40 years before coming to Tassie and I have to tell you, I've never seen rain down here like it rains up there, and don't try and tell me you don't get much rain in NSW. I've found in Tassie that there are very few weekends when it's too unpleasant to ride. Yes, it get cold sometimes, but so does Toowoomba in Qld, and so do many other country and city areas in Qld, NSW, and Victoria. I've found that if you wear the correct clothing in winter it's never too cold to ride.

It might be a little bit warmer in NSW than Tassie, but if you've moved there just to get away from the rain.............sorry, but I think you're gonna be disappointed!!

I guess we all just need to dress according to the weather...............do our best to keep warm on cold days, and cool on hot days, and enjoy our ride whatever!!

Cheers

My family and I moved to just south of Hobart! Pretty place but too damn cold even in late march to early april. If we had a sunny day and opened up the windows to let the sun in it usually got warm enough, but if the day started out overcast then we were chilled to the bone most of the day. It was also going to be more difficult and expensive to visit family at Christmas time, with booking and paying for the boat back. Returned to Queensland and now enjoy camping and riding weather most of the year. It can get quite cool for a few weeks in the middle of winter and get quite warm in January, but the rest of the year makes up for it.
I'd love to go back to Tassie for a ride in it's warmer weeks of summer but I'll never try living there again.

That's the jacket I have. On the way home from my first Farride to Walkaway, it was raining cats and dogs inc thunder and lightening. Stayed dry for the whole day.
