Title: New member from Townsville, QLD
Post by: STutter on November 26, 2012, 02:37:06 PM
Hi all,

I'm from Townsville and have joined primarily due to events at the MRA Townsville Toy Run on the weekend. I was standing near my black 2000 ST1100 and some shifty looking bugger comes along and looked like he took the keys from my dash. Before I could say anything, he quickly went onto another bike and fiddled with their dash too.

Just as I was thinking we had a serial ST1100 molester amongst the toyrunners, I realised he'd left behind a card for this forum  :)

Anyway, here I am. I'm 30, and have a few bikes, but the ST is my main transport. I love a long ride and have gone from Tville - Philip Island and back via a 7000km route a year ago, which was fun. I even did a track day on it while down at the island. Nothing like 180kmh down the straight and being passed by litre sportsbikes. An intermittent connection on the coil packs (which I failed to diagnose) meant riding back from Melbourne was all on 3 cylinders with no acceleration.

The bike initially came to me from the Gold Coast as a purchase off eBay. It had been possibly crashed at some point (heavy scratches on the fork guards), cleaned up, then neglected. After a carb clean and a bit of loving it became socially acceptable in a vague sense. I introduced a friend, now my partner, to riding on it and now we pretty much go two-up whenever we can. I'm also with the Townsville Restored Motorbike Club. Currently has around 110000kms on the clock and I change the oil at 5K intervals and the filter at 10K intervals.

I joke to people that the ST is my station wagon - not sexy, but practical. It can carry a lump of stuff and two people and not really change in handling characteristics lol.

Work to do on it is to overhaul the calipers, fiddle with the clutch because it really CLUNKS into first and sometimes into second and get some new plastics. Most recent purchase was a secondhand Corbin seat for $150.

The dream is to sell the old beast off and get a Ural sidecar outfit sometime next year possibly and let the 1983 GPZ750 take over "lone wolf" duties. We'll see what happens.

Looking forward to head out on some rides with the local contingent - somehow managed to find mysefl almost surrounded by ST's in the Toy Run.

Nah that is Hanno on the forum Stutter.  I was the noisy bloke in blue with the microphone telling you all what to do before the ride - not on an St, but I do have one at home.  The bloke putting cards on your dash was either Sabie, or Rendog here on the forum cause they were following each other around apparently.

Watch for a PM at some point bloke cause we are looking at another possible ride on a Sunday morning or similar before Xmas, and having a BBQ at Sabie's also.  Talk soon & welcome.

Yeah no worries. I've got a wedding in Hervey Bay on the 22nd (any excuse to get on the highway!), but I think I'm free otherwise.

I'd be interested to see what other peoples bikes look and sound like, simply because I don't have a yardstick on proper ST1100 noises and behaviour. Its strange coming on here and everyone is proud of the make and everyone knows what the bike is about - simply because my mates like to give me a hard time for riding an "old peoples bike" or other folks not even knowing what the model looks like.

Them "young peoples bikes" need filling up every 200kms or so lol.

Hey STutter, a question you can ask yourself, how many "young peoples bikes" will still be going strong with 110,000k's on the clock????? Not may I'd bet! :-++

Hi STutter, and welcome to the site, I had the blue ST on the toy run and was one of the card placers on the day, Rendog on the red 1300 was the other.

Stay tuned for more ST adventures her in the North.

Welcome STutter,
The Ural outfits look like fun. We saw one in Kuranda in July. A couple were taking it around Australia.
Did you see the article about them in Australian Road Rider a few months ago? If not, let me know and I will copy it for you.

 :well

We are all FAMILY here STutter!!     :-(((

Can you tell already that I ride a 'hideous' 13?       :rofl

Welcome aboard mate. This is one of the great sites for ST Owners - and even better because it has a local flavour with some great input from our international members to boot.

Just ask away if you have any Q's - some braniac on here will generally set you straight with oil, tyres, farkles, comms, lighting etc.

Just make sure you look after your other mates as they will     :'(     when they see you hanging with your new friends on old peoples' bikes (especially when you get to the coffee stop BEFORE them)       :crackup

Enjoy your time here.

Cheers, Diesel

Just because you love all of your family, doesn't mean to say you can't occasionally put the ugly kid down.

But not like the "put down" at the vet.

... unless they're REALLY ugly  :p

It's ok, the next RTE the north's 1300's will gang up on STutter, hang on a minute, just remembered Tackleberry and Bikebear will be on the 1100's side.... Hmmm may have to rethink that strategy.... :-X

And just for the record, I quite like the styling of the ST1300. It is repeated in the BMW1200RT and the new Triumph Trophy, so it must be practical.  When I test rode one it felt a bit strange to start with as the bodywork just seemed to be a lot less, but it was still very effective.   :beer 8) Wot thuh

I actually agree with him, without even riding the ST1100.  Probably come from my severe dislike of that piece of crap Bavarian Maybe Works crap R1200 I had to ride for some months (that was when it was on the road). :A
