NSW - RTE at Rylstone Saturday 19th of January 2013

Do you want a test ride before the trip to the 2013 National Rally???

Here is a Ride Map:  http://goo.gl/maps/2Cj5R (http://goo.gl/maps/2Cj5R)

I'm leaving Picnic Point at 0730, picking a mate up on the way, in the Blue Mountains.

0930 - Meeting point if you prefer will be the Shell at point "B" on the map (place called Bowenfels just east of Lithgow) fuel/coffee/all day breakfast etc
1000 - Leave for Rylstone,

To dine and drink, I thought we would try:"The Old Brick Bakery" (Google Map: http://goo.gl/maps/Zx2M4 (http://goo.gl/maps/Zx2M4))

Approximate Eating Time: 11am at the Bakery

OzSTOC Events are not group rides, so you can come straight to Rylstone , or you can meet up with other members and take the windy way, it is completely up to you  :thumbsup

If you have friends with other styles of bikes who you would like to bring along, they are more than welcome  :thumb

The Bylong Valley Way is getting busy by the cold seam gas people (another whole story) so get in sooner then later.

Please Post Below if your keen to come!

Cheers
Dave

Sounds like a great ride. I might be able to make it, but only to Canberra-Rylstone and back (around 390kms each way, without too much backtracking).  And the flag would also turn up  :hatwave

For those who have read this but think it might be a bit far from down the southern part of NSW, any interest in a ride closer to home, say in the Canberra-Young-Wagga area?  PM me if you are interested and I will organise a location and day that best suits.

Love to see you saaz, even if just for a chat and something to eat.  We are probably leaving Rylstone ourselves around midday to complete the trip in time. (28amp alternator, so no good lights)

Also, thank's Streak for your lovely editing of the post, it's a whole lot better then what I sent you. (I'm an apprentice with this stuff)

There are some good write ups on "bylong valley way" on the web, and we ride through an old crater (thank God it's not recent) and follow the train line roughly.  Having said that, I've never been through here, that's why "Packo88" on the membership map is showing the way.

Cheers
Dave

This is a great ride, might be a bit hot  :H  be a good reason for me to leave town while all the cow music  :cuss ers are in town. I am sure the pillion will want to get away from the wailing noise that goes until the early hours of the morning, then starts again at 7am.  >:(

Had lunch at the bakery a few weeks ago; great pies and sausage rolls!  :eat but not many tables.

I'll be coming across that nice road from Bathurst to Illford if anyone else is heading that way, probably around 10:00.

I/we will be coming in from the O'Connell Road so could meet up near the Sofala Road at 10am. Probably have to fill up in Bathurst to give more options of which way to go.  What are the Cudegong/Glen Alice Roads like?

Hi John, It's been a while since I've been on that road (in my Landcruiser), but looking on Google Maps, from the Glen Davis turnoff on the Castlereagh HWay, it's 84km to Rylstone, with 23km of dirt. I'm not sure where it turns to dirt, but it used to be fairly gravelly. If we're in Bathurst at 10 to eat at Rylstone at 11, we'd have to leave Bathurst by about 8:00, as it's about a 3 hr ride via Glen Alice. The more direct route on the Peel Rd is a bit over an hour - no  :cop that I've seen, but there's always a first time! It's a good road to Ilford, but from the Castlereagh HWay to Rylstone, it's a bit bumpy with a few spots where you need to take care. It's a bit like that any way into Rylstone though, but no problems.

If you were heading back to Canberra that night, the most direct route would be back through Portland and Diamond Swamp Rd to Oberon. Diamond Swamp Rd may have a bit of dirt as well.

Another place that I haven't managed to get to since they did some art work there is Portland. Apparently, the town had some artists come in and paint a whole heap of buildings vacant walls with heritage advertising signs; you know the Kinkara Tea sign, etc etc. That might be a nice diversion back (also for any Sydney members), and you could alway head back via O'Connel or the Hampton Rd, on the River Lett side of Lithgow.

As I'm only 45mins away from Bathurst, I can meet you there anytime, and depending on which way you want to go, either side of the O'Connel Rd. Let me know which way you'd like to go and we'll go from there. That goes for anyone else coming from the south and west of Rylstone.

Thanks Andrew. I might just meet you in Bathurst at 10am and go the direct way. On the way back I will go the other way through Oberon I think, but depends on who else might come and what they want to try.

I will be going regardless, and I have just washed and polished the bike too

Where in Bathurst at 10 am would you all be meeting up? I've done the Sofala road south but not from Bathurst to Ilford. Would be good to go up Wiagdon and Commissioner's Hill rather than down them.

On another tack, is there anyone with knowledge of the Limekiln Road? I drove over it about 30 odd years ago and at the time a lot of it was dirt - just wondering (for future reference) what it's like now.

Subject to local knowledge, I was planning on filling up at the newish servo near Kelso (there is a new McDonalds there as well) after coming in from the O'Connell road towards Kelso, then going up to the Sofala Road turnoff in Kelso by 10am.  If there is a more definite point that Andrew can think of, that will be it.

Hi John and Peter,

The new servo and Macca's is the best spot to meet, then on to Peel Rd (via Sofala) to Ilford. Left from Ilford onto Castlereagh HWay (toilets half a K up the road on left at Ilford) then a K or so before a left to Rylstone. You're right, Peter. Wiagdon Hill is much more fun going up :candystwheelie; less hard braking, and harder acceleration out of the corners. If a hot day, some patches of tar are liquid and slippery though.

I last drove the Lilmkilns Rd (with turnoff to Capertee) about 20 years ago, a fair bit of dirt, and 4WD in sections to get to Capertee, or back to Sofala.

Will be there sometime between 10 and 11. Might go early to take ad of the cool morning breeze.

Actually, I hope the day is not too hot because I am bringing my friendly dragon "George Wyvern" who now possesses what used to be my ST1300. George has a problem with very hot breath that is worst when my Two Brothers pipes backfire on deceleration - the last thing we need is bushfires in the Wollemi NP!   :H

Atoyot - will be good to meet again, say hello to LindAtoyot! Why aren't you going to Middleton anymore? I'm trying to get Mother Terese to stay in Adelaide for a week but says she won't go at all if L doesn't go.

Forget Phillip Island - that's for rev-heads (oh that's right - UR1 - bugger).   :||||  Wot thuh. I spose all Ozstoc riders are revheads of one sort or other otherwise why bother owning such a brute.

I can't really see any opportunity to meet anyone on the way because I will be riding via Narellan and the Blue Mountains and then heading up the Castlereagh to Rylstone.

Hi St George! Look forward to catching up with you on Sat.

Still working on Lindy for Middleton, but she's really going to be stuck at work with no chance of getting the time off. That's the un-fortunate part about working in a school - school hols only until LSL kicks in. I'm still a bit unsure, as there are a few things on that weekend, and I might'nt be able to get the time off as well, but we'll see. It would be good to meet some of the members from the furthest corners of our great land!

Packed, but didn't wash anything, have to keep the water for the invading 'cat stranglers' (country music festival, well that's what some of them sound like their doing).  |-i   Rushed to cut down my old screen that was damaged back in April on the Putty Road, glued some of the bits back in and hope it will give me some cooler breeze. The new Bikescreens one I fitted after the accident is great at keeping the wind off, but just too good for these hot days. Everything else ready for a great ride, meet some nice people, enjoy a lunch and another good ride home.  :thumb

Sorry we didn't make it. Left a bit after 8am, started to rain 30km south of Tamworth so stopped for wet gear on, rain getting heavier and cold, so stopped again to rug up. Rain pissing down and down to 80k/h, fog so thick going over ranges (2nd gear) could hardly see lines on road, had a couple of 'moments' with the water running across road. We stopped for Mc Coffee in Scone, we were an hour behind schedule and 200km to go. Made the decision to turn around and come home as the rain getting heavier, running late and no way to get there by lunchtime, and had to consider the safety of my pillion and both getting home safely. Arrived home still wearing our jumpers and melted again. Hope everbody else who went enjoyed the day.

800km day for me, ran the whole range of weather from cool, cold, nice warm, rain.  Good to see some older faces, and some new ones (and those hidden under police helmets!)  That is a nice area and deserves and overnight meet of some sort so that all those other roads can be ridden.

Pictures a bit later, as Dave has the main ones.  The NSW/ACT flag even got wet..did I mention that we ride in the rain and cold :)

Well what a great day.

Dave thanks for arranging the ride and for your company on the way up. It was great to meet and talk to the bunch. Thanks to Terry for helping me with my pants and to Ruben for the ride home. Hope to see all on another adventure.

WTF?  You guys have MUCH Better RTEs than us by the sounds of it.        :rofl

Well done chaps.

Cheers, Diesel

I may have falsely incriminated Terry unless he rides a Blue 1300.

There were 2 Terry's there, must have been the other one.  :butt

Now if you were a 24 year old blonde with a decent bumper bar, oh and female, then it was probably moi.  :grin

Thanks to Dave for organising this meet, and as usual, it was great to put faces to names.
A good run up, met up with Atoyot (Andrew), Saaz and Terry B at Kelso for a terrific run to Rylstone :thumbsup

Apologies to (Rooster) for telling him it wouldn't rain and he wouldn't need his wets on (I  dragged 'em off ya) :spank, speaking of which, I dropped in to see a mate before heading home, didn't bother donning the wet weather stuff until I was soaked at Ilford  :||||, after which it rained for the rest of the trip back to castle Hill.

Crazy weather  :grin

Thanks for attending gentlemen.

Firstly, thanks to Packo for selecting the location and pre-mapping the trip.
Secondly, Streak for setting up the post and monitoring.
Thirdly, John for bringing the flag and merchandise.

Well it was a little wet and got wetter.

Glad to hear you both are OK Steveo, we did worry when we saw an Ambulance and Police car go through town with warning lights on and you weren't there.  It was a sports bike a few kay's out of town that made love to a bank on a corner (ouch).

Well, the stat's for the start of the day was - 5 x 1100, 5 x 1300 and 1 x Triumph Scrambler (Packo)
Terry (a local) turned up on his 1994 ST1100AS and was swiftly given a OZSTOC card.  So that made the count, 6 x 1100 and 5 x 1300.

OOPS didn't realise that I was on movie mode.

From left to right
Paul, Peter, Bruce, George, John, Packo (behind), TerryB, Tony, Andrew, Ruben.

Packo and I finished the loop through Bylong, Jerry's Plain, Colo Heights and it was pouring in most places on the Putty Road, got home 7pm.

Thanks again to all
Cheers
Dave

:thumbs Good to meet up again, I had always wanted to go to Rylestone. Some nice scenery on the way. I also got rained on from Ilford all the way back home to Windsor, 180 K's. Interestingly only the sleeves on my jacket got really wet, the Kevlar jeans I had on were only damp. ST1300 fairings must be pretty good at deflecting the worst part of the rain its heading into. :hatwave
Looking forward to the next ride. 8)

Can't claim highest kms for the day at just under 600 because a few travelled considerably further, eg, Saas and TerryB. But my first RTE was an experience worthwhile because after so many years off a bike the kms are needed to build back the old skills of stability, smoothness and a bit of a thrill when the op presents itself.

Putting faces to names was great. Surprising a local ST rider who rode past on an Emerald or Turquoise or Chartreuse or Cyan or Lime - whatever colour it was - anyway it was generally agreed that if this guy becomes a new Ozstoc member then he will find it hard to find another one to park next to at future meets. It was in fact a very well kept 1994 Pan European and the rider stopped and had a good chat.

The shop's claimed best pie - lamb & veg - was OK as TerryB said - I bought 2 and after the first bite was desperately looking for a bottle of Worstershire sauce.

The ride from the Gong started in light drizzle which continued until the Blue Mountains where it cleared. Lots of roadwork up there. Castlereagh hwy was fun in parts. Rylstone is an interesting historic town with many of its classic buildings still in good nick.

B4 leaving, Atoyot and I had a quick light beer in a local waterhole across the road where we spied a stuffed spotted quoll and a Wedgetail Eagle on the walls.

George Wyvern, (my friendly red dragon 1300) developed heartburn on the trip with the red FI (Fuel Injector) light coming on. Read a thread on this recently on the Ozstoc site where an overheating wire is thought to be the cause. Bike performed impeccably though. I have a frozen suspension adjuster and Atoyot told me that I can solve this by removing the adjuster knob and refilling with fresh brake fluid. The bike is really harsh over bumps so I will have to look into this.

So the trip was worth it for the riding experience alone but more so to meet a bunch of good guys. Next time tho I am going to try and include an overnighter and bring along another family member. This would break up a long ride nicely.

Great to hear your support Terry, they are a good bunch in NSW/ACT, if you keep an eye on the Events there are some great ones coming up!

Hi Terry!  I was at Rylstone, one of those white ST11s.  I am just thinking about future rides so good to know where members are as it helps when putting together rides, as we are now spread out across NSW

Hi Terry,

Welcome to the group, you have a nice looking ST. Glad you decided to join up with The Group, I'm sure you will enjoy the social aspect as well as the riding of our planned or sometimes spontaneous rides.

There is a planned get together over at Middleton Beach in March (see the thread on that for details), From memory the dates are 15, 16 & 17 March. There will be a whole bunch of riders heading that way and if you can make it and want riding company, put a notice up on that thread. I'm sure there will be accommodation available for you over there.

Be good to see you there.

Cheers

TerryB
