Title: Buying a new helmet for under $300
Post by: Streak on January 28, 2013, 09:20:49 PM
Hello all,

Well time has come for Teela to get a new lid, she had an rjays helmet (covered in flowers  :o) She does not come riding that often hence why we don't want to spend gazillions on a lid

We have a budget of $200 to $300, I have been hunting around for something with a flip face on it. But can't see, to find to much.

Any suggestions or thoughts on what we can get?

Lol not at all, but we have a budget, so we are seeing what we can find for the money, I have suggested the rjays tour tech, but not the right colour apparently.....

Kym got her helmet from ALDI of all places when they had motorcycle gear one weekend. $70 w/ australian standards sticker, came with same positioned vents as on my $700 shoei, but came with extra set of padding and a second visor which mine didn't :( and a carry bag. Kym says it's quiet and comfortable as well :(.... I didn't get one.

Otherwise Moss street if you're coming down to BNE may have some.

Regards,
Robert.

I wear an English made Nitro VZ317 which has the flip up front. Seems good, has all the right standards stickers (AS/NZS 1698) and was quiet until I bashed it on the tar of the Putty road and broke the visor hinge. Bought from AMA accessories at Yatala just off the M1 for $250. My local Honda shop also stocks them.

There is also the RXT range, and the Zeus  https://www.thehelmetwarehouse.com.au/store.php?crn=500 (https://www.thehelmetwarehouse.com.au/store.php?crn=500)
I don't have an RXT, but have tried them on. They seem to be of similar quality to others in the price range. The Zeus may be better again.

If you forget about the TSS you can also get a bright red one Teela.

That means you will be an imperial guard, and the StormTrooper will have to obey your directions. :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl

well i have been talking to Bikers World in Brisbane http://www.bikersworld.com.au/ (http://www.bikersworld.com.au/) and they have some Evoline 2 Helmets on special at the moment that we can get in our price bracket, that might just do the job for the amount that teela pillions with me  :thumb

I didn't even think about evoline 2 as usually they are well beyond the price range you put up.  If the helmet fits then it would be a good choice, as rated or full face and as an open face.

Twin Screen System - Their version of those stupid pull down sunglasses that sit too far out to be real glasses, and too close to go over your own glasses.  Just a gimmick I didn't want.

I have used the pull down sunscreen on the Shark Evoline 2, and found it works really well for those times when you have the sun coming right into the helmet.  It is not a replacement for sunglasses, but more like the sunvisor in a car.  It is well away from my glasses when deployed.  Of course when I really needed it on the last border run it did not work, fixed now.

I've got a RJays TourTech TSS, and while I find it ok, even the internat sun visor (I wear glasses) I wouldn't buy one again. Main reason in the weight. I didn't realise how heavy they are until I picked up my 30+ year old Aria CLC helmet at the same time I had the RJays in the other hand. I don't know or care what they weigh, but the difference was astounding. I'd be guessing to say that the words "light" and "Flip-face" don't co-incide with "$200 to $300".

I also have a Shark RSR Carbon for more sporting rides, and whilst I love the functionality of a flip face, I find the lighter helmet helps with reducing fatigue.

For me personally as a rider, on that budget, I'd go for a lighter full-face over a flip-face, unless you can find one that is light, as well as quiet. The Tourtech is neither, but I've seen them on special for $299.

One that might be suitable is the Nolan range of "crossover" helmets. The N43/N44 looks a bit weird at first sight, but the more I look at them, the more sense they make, particularly for pillions, as they are so modular. While not a proper flip face design, they are convertible to one of a number of configurations, one or two of which, might be useful.

Having made that suggestions, St George might chime in here and tell you about his wife's helmet, as I think that from memory, it is one of these models. If Casey wears a Nolan, they must be OK, so St George might be on to a good thing!

How does Terese find the Nolan, Gregory?

One more thing, I find the flip down sunscreen good, as I wear glasses, and whilst I could have my prescription sunnies on, sometimes it's just more convenient to flip the sun-visor thing down. I don't find it helps to keep the sun out of my eyes, but I'll have to admit that it I flip the chin peice up when I'm into a low sun, I can use it very effectively to angle my head to avoid the sun. I don't think that the TourTech is designed to be used with the chin peice up though....
