new problem with the 1990 st1100. got power but no ignition, works sometimes but no go, towed home from Ulysses tonight. :think1 has anyone had this happen to them or suggestions to help
-
I'd be looking at the ignition switch as a suggestion.......they are know to fail after some years of use.

had that problem before but tht also shuts down all power. this time only seems to be spark as stater motor worked and then flooded so fuel pump also work

Is the bike an ex police bike, in any case have a look the the connection for the side stand. On the green wire could be a bullet connector. If the bullet separates the engine will run in neutral but will kill the engine when in gear, and wont restart (I have a switch in the line to act as an imobiliser).
Make sure the bullet is firmly seated
P.S. Iy could be a dodgy sidestand switch as well

no fire in neutral, not ex police.

Hey Royce,
Might be something Col Dunk (redlands) could help you with.

Morning Royce,
Mate, I had a similar intermittent problem with my '98 some time ago - plenty of power - lights, horn, blinker, stop light etc- traced it back to the cut-out switch (handle bar [red switch])- short story - after short fiddle/flick of switch - full circuit and start as if nil wrong in first place. (Bad connection in cut-out)

Hey Royce,
How coincidental is this:----
About 0930 this morning, unloaded St1100 panniers (tools and all) then rode to Aldi at Vicki Point - parked in their carpark - did a few things - returned to the bike - packed goodies into panniers - key into ignition - turn on - mini explosion / short circuit - no power what so ever - :think1 :think1 :think1 :think1 :think1
why did you do that and what for? :think1 :think1 :think1 :think1
sound came from near side of bike - no odours though - oh well - I know what has happened here - Battery - Supercheap is across the road- away I goes - $149-00 (Century Katana Sport Battery - sealed lead acid) plus screwdriver & small shifter - $161-00 later I return to the bike - set new battery to fill with acid from the container - remove the seat & tupperware - unscrew battery terminals & remove battery - wait while newie fills- insert new battery - connect terminals and hey presto like magic - all ignition & warning lights work and motor turns over & starts bike ..... phew and it was bloody hot doing it - must have jinxed myself with my earlier reply and then some 2hrs later - all mobile again.
After much cursing & swearing about that battery (a Bikemaster ??), I realised it was 4 yrs 2mths & 26 days old - probably no real reason for complaint.

yeh bobSTer you nailed it. all panels of then think kill switch. few tests and recollection of previous minor problems and yep dodgy kill switch so a bit of solder has fixed that problem forever (bridged connections). will maybe change to police set soon. all back together except recharging battery. :runyay :beer
as for your lucky escape alls good. lucky you where near enough to get back on road

Royce,
Can be lucky - I had planned Ulysses ride today but another matter popped up prior which forbade me from joining the day.
Just as well - could have been stranded somewhere around Nobby.
Ah well - another time\\\
