Hi guys, as per the heading my mechanic advises that I was way too creative with my electrical farckleing and that led to frying the regulator/rectifier and also damaging the alternator. I'm told that I'm looking at about $900 for an alternator. Does anyone have a spare alternator that they'd like to sell? A partial reconditioning with parts from the UK will set me back around $560 for parts only and I'm sure the mechanic would also want his share.
Please message me if you can help.
Thanks in advance
Ruben

Just a question, going to that expense why don't you install a 40amp alternator? If understand it right it fits in as normal and will solve all of your to many farkles problems....
Here is some excellent information by a gentleman who has done it

Hi Ruben,
Try this bloke, if it's still there:-

What farkles caused this trouble. I think?? the swing arm has to come off to do the alternator so check the swing arm bearings/final drive components etc. Hell its only money.
Cheers

Ruben, are you sure that both the reg/rectifier and alternator are gone? The reg/rectifier does go, and/or the wiring to it. You might want to PM Greencan as he has some engines and bits lying around, or might know someone who has some spares. I can give him a call if you want to as he might be busy doing work at home, and I need to call him sometime about the weekend anyway

Hi Graham, The problem is sourcing one and then, the lack of confidence for such an operation but do agree that it would be a favoured option if the price was comparable and a unit available.
Thanks for looking into it for me.

Hi Dave,
I phoned the guy from your link and it appears promising. He seems to know my mechanic and they will be discussing it tomorrow,
as far as my farkeling is concerned? a voltmeter and three powerlets.......I have learned a lot in the last day or so.......seems that the connectors begin to build resistance as they get rusty leading to overheating and this process builds on itself. One of the yellow wires from the alternator to the rectifier melted at the connector which led to the alternator working harder to maintain power which led to it wearing itself out sooner....this is in Ruben/stupid speak. when I connected the powerlets I did to the wrong power cable, still unsure which cable was supposed to be the right one, I was told that they created power surges when I connected anything wich explained the blown fuses on the ipod charger and the gps charger.
Thanks for looking this up for me.

Hi John,
Can you call Greencan and see if he has anything laying around, perhaps a 40 amper?
Thanks

Thanks for that Ruben,
If you want, when the alternator is sorted, pop over to my place and we will do the maths and wire your accessories up, I have the right gear for the job.
Just a thought.
Cheers

Ruben, Greencan is having a look and will get back to me. It would only be a 28amper but suitably wired up without excessive load it would do the job. If there is one, it would be worth having a look at the information about how to improve the wiring so that future failures are minimised (basically hard wiring some connections). I should have copies, if not I know where to look.

Sorry to say no spare alternators as the engines Greencan had do not have any.
