Title: Insurance - who? and for how much?
Post by: BigTed on June 24, 2013, 04:33:38 PM
It's in near new condition, never been dropped (knock on wood), 40,000km, black, ST1300 ABS, MY 2010.

My insurance is due for renewal. The existing Swann policy has a sum insured value of $18,600, at $630/yr.

I was looking at dropping the sum insured a little, and possibly looking at "InsureMyRide". Can anyone offer their 2c worth?

Cheers, Rob (W. Aust).

Rob I have the same year and only 20k. I am insured with Shannons and it costs me $460.00  and the same value as yours. I also get a a screen a year with no penalty. I have swapped one screen with no problems.

It's been my experience that if you say to your insurance company ,come up with a better deal or i'm walking, you'll be amazed that they more than likely have a similar policy much cheaper.i have gpz with shannons ,varadero with swan just the best deal i could get at the time.

The last couple of times I need to renew the bike, Insure my ride was much dearer than Swann. I have stayed with them as a result.

A few months ago I had a quote with insure my ride and with rating 1 the cost was around the $400 mark but they don't offer rating protection like Swan does.

Seven years ago Shannons wouldn't even look at me when I first got the bike as I rode seven days a week. What they like now I have no idea.

Gah...

Just got my insurance renewal from Swan.

This includes Tyres and gear/accessories

Just went to Insure my ride and got an online quote based roughly on what I'm covered for now

insure my ride was over $200 more then swan. The above pic included my upping my premium to reduce the amount and also not including gear and equipment...

Swan keeps my business. Market value $17,131 (could have sworn I originally agreed value of 20)

And this is Shannons, although that's bog standard, no cover for accessories etc.

I ended up with AAMI who came out cheaper than Insuremyride, Shannons who were not interested due to riding 7 days a week, RACQ who do not cover the ST1300,  I pay a bit more as they offer pay by the month.  I will re evaluate when it comes up again and do the shop around for what suits my circumstances

I have just switched from QBE to Youi

QBE $54.28 (Per month)
Youi $32.99 (Per month)

Includes $1500 cover for aftermarket parts (they will do up to $4300)
And riding gear (any riding apparel or protective clothing purposely made for motorcycle riding, including helmets, gloves, riding jackets, pants and boots, and any other motorcycle-specific gear, such as body armour and knee guards.)

I went with Swann this year for $30 a month with rating 1 protection, no screen coverage as they only do that with cars but the trailer is covered up to a $1000 (what I paid for it) while I'm towing it. Youi said rating protection was included but it was never stated in the wording on the policy or the PDS. The trailer was not covered while towing but I could have paid extra with Youi for that.

Have just changed my car over to youi ,and thought id get the house quoted too ,they ask a load of questions ,but unlike suncorp who have put a blanket price increase across all of Emerald due to the two floods ,youi look your house up on google earth and look at where you are and take into account if you got water any where near you ( i did not,i live on the highest ground in town) anyhow long story short suncorp is $2500 just to insure the house no contents ,YOUI $789 so i am canceling my other policy and moving the house to youi ,why should i pay for bad risks ?anyway that's my two bob's worth .

Marcus, Grab it while you can.

I just checked with Youi and they wanted $916.92....... and I already have a car insured with them. No way am I paying that much.

Quote from Insure my ride was $513.35

Bit of a difference, Insurance sure is a crazy business.

My cover with Swann cost around 500 last year and due early Feb.  I have all other with Youi and they are similar.  Have to requote soon. How do people get cover for 200-300. Is value low or something???

I only ride mine on weekends and store it in a locked garage, also I live in the country, I assuming that's the difference

I think that means I don't ride it to work everyday, occasional weekly rides would be ok I guess.

Mine works out to about $360 a year with Swann, I live in the country, rating 1 and bike kept in the back yard for 24/7 riding makes mine cheap compared to your $233 weekend only riding

That's the catch with YOUI ,if you have everything in your favor you pay very little ,they do not take on high risks at all ,my mate was refused cover as he was close to getting wet last big flood .

Righto, thought I would pass on this little tidbit!

Just bought a new bike (2010 Fat Boy Low - NO smartarse comments guys!) and got an insurance quote for both the ST & FatBoy from Swann.  Both bikes with good coverage (Harley $20,000, Honda $8,000, Helmet $1000, Gear $3000, Personal Items $500).  Swann quoted $865 per year for both.

At the same time, my finance broker offered to get me a quote for the both.  Same deal on coverage and his price is $622 a year through Swann!!  WTF?!?  I questioned (with the broker & Swann) the massive price difference and have found that brokers can be offered discounts from the insurance companies that they wont/cant do directly.

After a bit of a chat with my broker, he's ok with me passing out his details for those that would like a price choice.

Justin @ East Coast Finance - 03 8682 8930

Justin is a good bloke and I can highly recommend him.

Cheers!

I took out a comprehensive policy for a 2013 second-hand bike through Shannons today.
Agreed value $15,000.
I mentioned my accident last year that wrote off my Honda ST1300.
No other policies with Shannons.
Annual premium $339.41
It includes nominated items on the bike, crash bars and Erica spot lights; and $3000 accessories, wearing apparel etc.
My FJR1300 is with InsureMyRide. That premium is almost double the amount I paid today.

Not sure what Shannons are like now but I tried them back in 2006 after I bought the 1100 and it was a big NO from them. It seemed they only wanted part time/casual riders not those who rode most of the time so I went with Swann.

Swann Laos or quick with mine. Only catch was the helmet wasn't covered. An extra premium apparently.
