Good one Bikebear.

Looks like a lizard. If painted grey/ brown with a blue wiper could be marketed as "The Bluetongue Lizard will lick your Blizzard". :eek   :runyay

If I lived in Tasmania or UnZud I might think about fitting one.
Although the weather we've had this Winter in Queensland almost warrants it!   :o

I bloody hope not.   Ineffective and illegal would be my guess.

I couldn't see it being any more illegal than a camera being up there.

It hasn't structurally compromised the helmet.........don't know?

I understand that any modifications to a helmet, even fitting a comset, renders it illegal, and requires some kind of testing or inspection to ensure that the level of protection has not been compromised.  I'm not sure where this fits in the legislation.  I understand that our local police helmets fitted with radio comsets have been tested to ensure that they still comply.    I believe that cameras, radios, stickers and paint jobs all put the helmet outside of the Standard against which they are tested.

Pete,

I don't see where this would be considered as an illegal modification of the helmet, because it doesn't change the structural integrity which is what the standards test.  Your insurance may have some clause in there that allows them to get away with not paying something because they will always try and make up an excuse, so this may be the only danger you have.

As for our comms being fitted to work helmets, there are no extra tests they go through other than does it fit & work?

Having said that any of the sets where you drill the helmet are an illegal modification.  I know there are certain warnings about products adhering to the surface, or paints etc changing the integrity, however suction caps don't have those warnings.  I have a camera stuck to the side of my work helmet, and many others throughout the state do also, so this goes to show that we don't consider it an illegal modification of your helmet by using 3M interlock tape.  (Industrial velcro - can be purchased from Bunnings)

I will make further enquiries and report back if I find anything, unless one of the other guys out there already know differently, I will stand corrected.

Tack. I may stand corrected but SA colleagues had to get helmets tested or inspected after fitting com-sets, and a local who does awesome full helmet paint jobs says that painting renders the helmet unlawful, perhaps because it covers the compliance stickers.  I've also heard that any external fitting that interferes with the ability of the helmet to slide cleanly on the tarmac and not catch, makes it non-compliant.  I'm quite curious to hear what your enquiries reveal.

Now Biggles, hasn't anyone told you that Hobart is the second driest city in Australia! :spank I've lived here now for five and half years and during that time we've had less rain on the Tasman Peninsula than Brisbane would get in one year, honestly!  I lived in Brissie for 41 years before heading down here to Wonderland, and I know just how much rain falls on the sunny shores of banana land...........I do love the place though, well I did, before all the southerners headed north and increased the city traffic! :well  Spoilt things a little!!

If I lived in Tasmania or UnZud I might think about fitting one.
Although the weather we've had this Winter in Queensland almost warrants it!   :o

Pete you may have some specific legislation in SA that I am not aware of, however we don't have ours tested here in Queensland when fitting radios, bluetooth or anything similar.  In fact one of our officers who was killed during a wide load had a bluetooth fitted and it was mentioned in the Coroner's Case and nothing was said about it, other than he may not have been concentrating fully on what he was doing whilst talking to his wife at the time he was killed.  These, as you know, are mostly external fittings, and if it was illegal they would have issued a statewide directive immediately, and I haven't seen one.  I am also not aware of any offences I can charge somebody with for wearing one, or using one here in Queensland.

Some helmet systems do require you to drill through the outer shell and these definitely do render the helmet illegal, so unless they may be using a similar system and they are tested after the modification this may be the case.

As for the painting yes is does render it illegal, because the paint potentially changes the integrity of the outer shell and weaken the structure, which then doesn't comply with testing requirements.  As for external fittings, I can only assume anybody that said this would be referring to the actual operation of the helmet, eg not letting a chin bar click back into a locking position, but other than that I don't see an issue, unless there was something specific again that I wasn't aware of.  I have a camera hanging off one side of my helmet that has been mounted using dual lock, and a bluetooth unit (SMH5) on the other side, so this goes against what you have been told in just about every aspect.

Again unless there is anything specific in legislation in South Oz that I'm not aware of, but there is nothing that I am aware of that would explain what you have been told other than what I have outlined above.

Thanks Tack, and I accept your wisdom on this matter.    :-++    I guess I can now go and buy one of those Windscreen Wiper Gadgets to hang on my helmet, knowing that while it may be legal, it will still make me look like a d@#$head.

Never mind the lizard, I want the complexion of the model! No more sun spots, nothing for my doc to freeze/fry. Where can I get that?
