Hi Guys, Another ST1300 owner here from Atherton, FNQ.
Only picked the bike up last week, a 1 owner 2004 model with 58,000 k's. Its a nice step up from my old 87 CBR 600 :thumbs
I'm a licensed aircraft engineer, working in general aviation so getting a new toy with EFI & all sorts of electronics is a nice change from playing with air-cooled dino engines :) No more carb'd bikes for me, not that I hate them but I prefer the fuel injected way of doing things..
Why the ST1300? I wanted something comfortable for my daily 60k commute, that I can take out on weekends for some fun, and also still be able to take the other half in comfort. (She has never been on a bike, so this shall be interesting)
Did a service on it today since the dealer didn't.. Found a coolant leak to take care of in a few weeks when I was planning on doing a coolant flush anyway.
Future plans will include heated grips, and a stereo/music system :)
I've also got a long-term project '68 Mustang in the shed, but its a few years off finished at the rate I get to work on it now.. :'(
Anyway, the part everybody wants... PICS!
-
That bike will be spoiled having a LAME to take care of her.
You're a lucky bloke, getting one of the RED ones.
Welcome to the fray. There are a few other firm believers around the FNQ. Have a look at the Member Map.

Welcome Me_3. Are you the bloke who bought the bike from Wayne Leonards in Cairns? I was sitting at the front of the shop drinking coffee with the Ulysses crowd when you came in and test rode it. I put an OzStoc card in the right hand glove box ages ago.
The guy that originally owned the bike is a mate of mine and he looked after it when he had it, making sure it was serviced regularly and kept maintained. I suspect the coolant leak may be because it has sat for a long while at the shop before being sold, my 1100 developed an coolant leak not long after I got it due to sitting and not being run regularly and the seals had gone hard.
Look forward to catching up soon.
Cheers,
BB.

That would be me.. I'm still 9 years short of joining the Ulysses, but I don't have much time free for more club runs between work, ford club, and projects. :)
I'm not worried about the coolant leak, i'll get around to pulling it apart later on (its in the shed this week since I have my kids for the whole week), but as long as it doesn't loose lots of coolant i'm not worried. I've done 800km now and its only a tiny amount that I wouldn't have spotted if I didn't pull covers off things while looking around and doing the oil change..
I might try and get along to this run, all depends on what time I finish work on the sat night, and if the Girlfriend is game to try a good distance run as her first long trip on a bike..

welcome from Emerald Queensland

A ST, a Mustang, and a girl.
Does life get any better than that?
Good onya Me for climbing aboard this forum and saying G'day.
I wonder if your bike is the one from this great vid....
ST 1300 on Gilles Range Australia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqFxbjwkUlU#)
Anyway - great roads around your way (as you know) keep a watch out for a madman on a :gldst11 - goes by the name BEAR!
Cheers, Diesel
-
Iv'e done this road on my Varadero ,bloody good fun, mind you it's hard to go wrong in that region.
-
I'll find out how it goes up the Gilles in the dark on Wednesday... should be interesting (Has to be better at night than my old CBR600)
-
The Gillies is my favourite range here, followed by the Palmerston, Rex and Kuranda although the run from Atherton to Ravenshoe has a great little run up through Longlands Gap providing it's dry.
-
Got the shits with it leaving a coolant puddle tonight so ripped into it. replaced a few hose clamps with some gates ones I had on the wall, seems to have fixed it.. test run will be tomorrows run to work :)
-
Hey Good Luck ME_3 I hope it fixes the problem as its a nice looking Red ST that one............Just needs a Genuine Top Box to set her off........... :thumb
-
Installed a top box in preparation for next years run to Melbourne for the OZStoc Rally..
Also purchased a one man tent, air matress, and tyre repair kit & compressor. Also have a ram-mount kit for the phone/gps, and some power sockets on the way to power everything. Hopefully they are here in the next week or two so I can get them installed for a 1000km test ride...
Top box was a cheap one from Ebay, i'm really happy with it and the price was even better!

That looks the goods, well done.
Some advice on some of the cheaper top boxes though. The mechanism securing the box to the plate (in my experience) is usually not as sturdy / secure as on the ST1300 system from Honda. Plenty of boxes have come off on rough roads. I have not lost one, but I usually secure my Bestem top box with a tie-down. Have not bothered with the ST top box.
A mate lost his RJays top box a couple of weeks ago. When we stopped at Healesville he noticed it was missing, must've come of between Yarra Glen and Healesville, went back, looked, found it, a few scuff marks, but still fully serviceable, very lucky!!
-
Hey Me_3, looks good mate, no problem with non genuine gear it still makes the STeed look good. Besides, ya gotta have somewhere to stow the jocks and socks. :thumb
-
The box looks right on the bike as far as looks go.
Just beware of mounting it rigidly. The Honda one has rubber bushes and moves about 10mm left and right. Being cantilever mounted, it suffers a lot from road roughness and rigid mounts will probably fatigue. Occasional removal and inspections will be a good preventative measure.
-
welcome to the crew. you will like the STead as a tourer as well as daily driver. the STang sounds like a good project also
-
I have a Givi top box ,has never given me any grief.hope you enjoy the bike.

Finally got around to some more modifications to the bike...
2 x 60w LED Spotlights - I now wish I had got the flood/spot combos, but they are still awesome from what I saw on tonights small test ride.
A Second Battery that only charges when the engine is running. Has power lead for my fridge on it, and will also have a USB charger for charging phones/headsets when parked up for the night.
All ready for this years run to toowoomba... I can't wait :-)
-
I suggest an isolator for the second battery, probably from a 4x4 shop (redarc I think)

Its fused, and connected via a relay off the primary, so there shouldn't be any issues there..
-
The isolator disconnects the second battery from the bike when power is turned off and reconnects after starting and main battrery is fully charged and regulates charging to the second battery. A relay can connect the second battery at ignition on, and can prevent starting of the bike if its pretty low.

Already done :-) It won't connect the battery until the engine is running, and the fridge shuts off if the battery runs low..
Its mainly for when I want to stop for a few hours and not let my drinks get hot :)
