Title: members numbers
Post by: Wombat on August 27, 2013, 09:50:52 PM
I know this has been brought up before and I was just reading Biggles words of wisdom when I noticed he had an ozSToc number. Can we all have numbers which we can use as callsigns Sierra Tango ???? and also wear with pride on caps etc. Any ideas so it is not hard work for a few. Ideas to start with early numbers reserved for the legends but my place in the alphabet is ok for me.

If I remember right Biggles number he has is from the Original OzSTOC group? Am I right?

We have never got into assigning numbers to people, and in all honesty we hav no plans to, it creates a whole new level of maintenence, as even though you have a website joining number, if someone deletes there account that joined before you, it will move you up a number...

The "Simple Machines" programme allocates a number as each person signs up, so in the early days before anyone deleted their account, the number was valid.  You're right Streak, in that a small error has crept in due to a few accounts being deleted by their owners.
I don't see any harm in membership numbering because folk accept the concept of joining queues, but I don't think it should be added to the Mods' already substantial duties.

Thanks for that and i dont wish to add any work to the moderators. Most people dont have two ways on their bike so for the few can we request a number for the callsigns. thanks for mine though and will use it when everthing is sorted. Just one question if the account is closed do the members close it or do the mods close it officially in which case the account would in effect not close but details could change to xxxxx thereby locking the numbers in. I wont spend anymore of your time.

it works both ways, accounts don't get locked to speak, they are removed and deleted (not that it happens very often) as depending on how they go, (left of their own accord, have not logged in, Deleted and IP banned), we have never actually put any focus on it, as it has never really raised its head much at all.

but don't hesitate to ask the question if you have one, we are always open and up front and happy to answer questions and thoughts  :thumbsup

I have deleted quite a few accounts, and blocked whole ranges of IP addresses.  Relax tho guys, it was due to a Russian Spamming takeover attempt. It lasted about two weeks and kept myself, Streak and Diesel very busy for a while.

I forget what number I have, but I think it is relatively low.  Have to have a look around.

Wow, Tony, you bin around a while!  #43.

The highest number I can find is 763.  But we have just 562 names on the Members' List.  So 201 names have been removed for various reasons, mostly due to resignations or inactivity I guess.  That's Mods' stuff.
