Title: Show us your "Chicken Strips"
Post by: ST2UP on August 28, 2013, 06:33:58 AM
Cleaning up the photo album I came across this pic I took on a trip......wanted a record for comparison working out tyre wear and selecting pressures etc.....instead of trying to recall what it looked like 2,000 k's ago grab a pic.

But it gave me a idea.......lets see your Chicken Strips !!!

Tyre is a 023 @46psi bike loaded and we 2up on a trip for 2 weeks.

Kinda the OPPOSITE to Chicken Strips.
Chicken Strips you get from leaning.
Canvas Strips you get from not leaning for too long.

Here's the BT 23 rear that just came off the bike after 9870 kms. Mostly riding two up and about one third trailer useage.

Not to many low speed corners where I live so the centre wear is more evident. Surprisingly for me there is some wear almost to the edge.

Alan, you definatly need more air pressure in that tyre. I put 50psi in mine for 2up.

Alan that tyre looks like a death trap.I had a bad accident once( that could have been avoided ) for the want of a decent tyre, never wear them out past legal ever again.

Nothing wrong with that tyre, that a sander and a grooving iron wouldnt fix

Sorry, the centre tread has just made it to the wear limit, the edge tread still has heaps to go. Every tyre I've had wears like that on the rear and at 42psi as per the tyre info on the bike.

The tyre looks worse than it is because of angle of the light.

Grooving iron!  Now there's a memory.  Waaaay back in 1968 I had an Austin A40 in Newcastle and very little by way of money.  There was a Professional near where I lived in Newcastle who would re-groove a tyre for $2.
Can you still buy those things?

Brian, I wouldn't allow your tyre to get so low. I'm sure you know but for the benefit of those that don't:

Each tyre has a wear indicator, which is usually a bar of rubber within your tread pattern. Keep an eye on those indicators and when the rubber bar is near or at the tread level then it's time to replace your tyre.

Title: Re: Show us your "Chicken Strips"

Good information their Sabie.......these wear indicators not only are a guide to tyre wear and the posibility of loss of traction wet or dry....when your rubber ring gets to this point it can affect the ride comfort/ cushioning.
Aside from the indicators you can normally 'feel' a tyre going 'off' they tend to squirm......Cheers Brian
P.S. Sorry I missed the run through to Murwillumbah today .... Wouldve been great to catch up .

I would imagine they'd be a collector's item these days Bill. I remember my dad (who owned a tyre and retreading business back in the 50's, 60's & '70's), had one and used it from time to time - he was good too!. I tried my hand, but used to go off at a tangent more often than not

I have a 3 year rule ,at 3 years it's time for new rubber ,as it goes hard and does not grip. From a safety point of view it's not worth the risk

Funny thing was, when I sold that bike, they said it needed a new rear tyre.  Ripped off.... :crackup

This how my mate on his Suzuki 109 rode into Katherine from Broome.  Not much rubber left on that one.  :o   :eek
I recall seeing something similar at Middleton.  :p

The second photo shows how he left Katherine on the "darkside".   No corners to negotiate, so it was fine when running at 26psi.

Thanks to a deal with HART (Honda Advanced Rider Training) organised by Harieg, I thoroughiy scrubbed my tyres free of chicken strips today while riding the Advanced 2 course at Willowbank Raceway.

(http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e136/Pixtor/ChickenStriprear_zps4cb1f246.jpg) (http://s38.photobucket.com/user/Pixtor/media/ChickenStriprear_zps4cb1f246.jpg.html)

I concluded the ST13 is a very good Touring machine, but doesn't cut it on the race track with the Ninjas etc.
It was still nice to see big numbers on the speedo without dreading being heated with a "hair dryer".
It might have leaned further, but I would have needed to take my foot off the peg since it was grinding down the tip knob.

The mirrors are removed because I had to take the driving lights off, and they tape up your mirrors anyway so you don't spread glass across the track when you crash.

Makes a huge difference when you on the racetrack rather then the unpredictability of the public roads.
Everyone going in the one direction...... No potholes, debri , corrigations , dips in the middle of the corners or the odd off camber roll off.... Track days are kool

Hi Royce
If the wear was on the rhs of the tyre as it sits on the bike it could be the the result of...
Road camber
Round abouts
A day at the track
You favour rh turns/ corners over the other

It's never camber.  There are good articles on the 'net to prove this.
It can't be roundabouts because there aren't enough of them.
Closed circuit tracks usually favour RH turns, but you'd have to do all your riding on them.
Leaning more to the right might contribute.
The real answer is  [drum roll]

It's the RH side for countries that drive on the left and vice versa because [another drum roll]

It's a greater distance around RH turns than LH turns, therefore the bike is leaned right longer than left.

Savvy?
