I found this in another ST forum. Someone did note that the shims are only used on the police edition. The standard civilian one has an adjustable inner bearing support and lock nut on the left side, just like the ST1100 has. I keep looking at the ST13 every new model year to see if Honda has incorporated the police pivot configuration and so far as of the 2012 year, they have not.
So anyone with a police model has a slightly different configuration to the civilian models.

Good find John :wink1

While I have never ridden at the speeds that are meant to induce the weave (and never will), the article implies that the weave on an ST1300 since (or near after) the world press launch in '02 is fiction, since it never leaves the factory with it. Am I reading that right?
A good find Saaz - an interesting bio. Cheers!

Yep, good info. :thumbs

I must say I have test ridden ST13s at the Snowyride, and at the speeds we were able to do (100kph of course..) felt great to me. I believe that over 160kph they are quite ok....
-
What a most interesting article. However, if every bike was custom "shimmed" and tested before leaving the factory to prevent the instability, why do anything from 20-40% of owners report that they have experienced the dreaded "Pan Weave".
-
Pete,
I wonder if what people are reporting as pan weave, is really the wobble you get in dirty air, like behind a truck.
My 1100 gets a bit of a twitch in dirty air, or gusty conditions.
If you stiffen up and try to fight the turbulence, it can get worse. The best technique seems to be to let the bike correct its self.
-
Brock,
It could be dirty air, as my 2008 certainly can get a bit twitchy, even around 150m behind a decent size truck. I must say that I have never experienced any kind of speed induced instability, even at the occasional very big number (on tracks of course). The Owner Manual advises on page five "...never exceed 130 km/h (80 mph) when carrying cargo"

Havn't experienced the weave on the 1300......In dirty air I tend to drop the screen to stabilize the bike, had a tyre go out of round on the 1100 after hit a timber bridge with some enthusiasm......that was fun :fp

When I test rode my 1300 on the Pacific Motorway I found with a tailwind it sat quite true however in the return leg in a blustery headwind, the bike became quite twitchy in comparison. I rode an 1100 on the same section of road in similar conditions (a true 110kp/h :law) without the buffeting and twitchy feeling. My extremely limited knowledge my first impression of this bike leads me to believe the 1300 is not as aero efficient as 1100, but I'm prepared to live with that. :runyay :grin

Dont fight the twitch, learn to let the bike do its thing.
Big difference beteween the reported Pan Weave, and areo dynamic twitching
-
We have a section of road out here that goes along a ridge line where you can nudge her up to 160 or more. I find the bike is fine with a tail or head wind but if the wind is coming from the side at an angle then it starts to get a bit untidy. :think1 I think its must be the way the air is hitting the pannier / top box from one side 1st
-
I recently blew the cobwebs out around the 160kph mark (twice) somewhere out west in still air without so much as a flutter, so maybe the 'weave' comes in above this point, but the beloved rode just fine that day as it does any other day :thumbs
-
Maybe it was there in the first models, but really I've never noticed it once (180+ a few times). I'd say it's a non issue with current models
-
I've never had a problem.....it gets a little twitchy sitting too close to vehicles in front, particularly large trucks, but I just let it twitch away until I can pass safely, I've never felt unsafe or concerned at any speed, not that I've ever exceeded the speed limit, well, not by too much anyway! :grin
-
Those that have experienced the "weave" report that it does not occur below about 180km/h. That's too quick for me these days, so I should be fine.
-
Then I'll never have a problem either Pete! :grin
-
So at what age does this slow down happen - :think1 Just so I know when to expect it? :grin
-
what age does this slow down happen
Good question, I bought the ST1100, cos I thought it might slow me down. (and the ZZR had died). Doesnt seem to have worked. :eek
-
Good question, I bout the ST1100
You did what? Wot thuh
-
Dohhhhh
That should say bought, does now :||||
