Title: Rider's seat backrest...
Post by: Diesel on September 16, 2013, 10:53:33 AM
Wouldn't mind having a look at one of these - anyone in this Club used one or have one that they can tell us about?...

Usually, when I'm on longer rides, I have a bed roll and tent to 'lean' up against if I want to.

There are a few brands - but this one can be to my door for under $150 on current exchange rates.

I have used the back Rest on the 1100 V-Star I Owned before the ST, it was fantastic, not sure how it would go on the 1300 though, as the seating position is different

I'd be a bit worried about the space and flexibility you'd lose.  When the highway pegs are out I push back further than that to stretch my legs.

Saw an interesting couple of photos a week or so ago, a back-rest that is actually fitted on a couple of extended rods, so it will move to support the single rider at the back of his (forward) seat, and then will move backwards to support the pillion. All the while being attached to the bike via the extended rods, so it is secure and looks quite strong. Fantastic looking thing, it's just that I can't remember where I saw it!!!  :well :well :well

Hi Diesel, well now it is your fault cos today my St had a birthday.
and now the poor old thing is an inbreed.
When I saw your post I realized that I had been contemplating getting a backrest for the poor old thing.
Then I went out to the stable and then realized that I could do it with the stuff that I had on hand and I did not have to spend any of the hard earned.
The total cost for this add on inbreed was, Three hours of mucking around, one cutting disc and four welding rods.
When sitting still it feels quite comfortable and so tomorrow I will be able to try it out.
Will let everyone know how it goes.
Cheers , Winston66

Winston 66,

Diesel thank you for the kind words.

well everyone I did promise that I would comment on what I found on trying out the new backrest,
Well after a trip around the block today, a mere 120 klms, I am happy to say that I think that my el cheapo backrest is going to stay as a permanent item on the ST.
When I got home I made a small adjustment to its position this entailed a very quick unbolting and an insertion of the bracket into a vise in order to straighten out some of the bends on the main stay . The idea was to move the padded section back about 25 to 30 mm .as I found hat I had slightly misjudged the amount of comfort room needed for the most important bits of tackle that I possess,
For those of you that might be wondering why? it was because I think that my bum was too big and then the rear of the tank was too close for comfort .
I am happy to say that It is now comfortable and with the extra support it ads to the enjoyment of the ride.
Cheers ,Winston66, Northampton, Western Aust.
