Some folks swear by 'em - some at 'em.
Got something to share on how they help you, or the safety ramifications for anyone interested?
Post below.

Never worn one, tho I can see they might givesome lower back support. It might get a bit hot in summer...

For trips over 200 k's I wont leave home without it. For LD riding I reckon it definitely helps with fatigue. I use a light weight Fox brand motorcross kidney belt for touring.....wouldn't know it was there when your riding and I always feel better at the end of the day for wearing it!
Also have one built into my back protector which does the same job but I only use it for spirited rides on my Bandito. :grin

Remember using kidney belts to ride around on Bol'dors, Katana's & the like.
It helped my lower back a lot on those old naked bikes. :thumbs
Don't wear one now though.
Buggered if I know why I stopped wearing one actually. :think1

Done the big kays wearing one and honestly couldn't tell the difference. Maybe it helped a bit, but thinking a couple of weeks ago I did 1100 or so without one and was good cant see if wearing one would of made a difference??????? But if I thought about it before I took off to do some kays would probably put one on just because.

Never felt a need to wear one..........I tend to ride with my lower back fairly upright/straight.........if you know what I mean!! :o
-
Never thought about it. I'll be watching this thread for sure.

Like rendog, used to wear one back in the old days. Never felt that there is much of a need these days, but then again have not tried to see if there is a difference.

I wear one on the Beemer all the time helps with lower back support. But they are notoriously uncomfortable bikes aren't they????? :rofl

i find my kindeys :nahnah

Holds my stomach muscles in so I can pull my jacket jipper up.

Must be hell on your kidneys, though. :eek :grin

I've never worn one as I never felt the need. I have suffered from a crook back, but the ST riding position has never aggravated my back.

Methinks there's a typo there Pete :KissBlow
Could have done with one in my Virago days, but never felt the need on the ST, even with my bad back.

Fixed - Thanks :grin

My first long trip on the ST had me rummaging around for my old kidney belt that I used to where in enduros, but when I found it, I realised that I mustn't have stored it properly, as it had shrunk enormously :cuss . Mind you, years ago before it shrunk, it was brilliant when I spent too long on my dirt bike, as it seemed to allow my body to take the pounding without copping the pain associated with sore kidneys and helped with lessening lower back pain the day after. Had to be careful not to wear it too tight though. I also used to use it on longer trips on road as I found it helped with fatigue, and it helped whenever I hit one of those hidden, un-expected large camouflaged bumps or potholes.
Tony's on the money having one built in to his back protector, which is the next safety item on my buy list.

I used to wear one when going anywhere that took longer than about 10 minutes. I found it very supporting and back-strengthening...and surprisingly comfortable as long as you don't try to make yourself look slim etc. :grin

Guilty!, If I managed to stretch mine around my rotund beer investment of a gut, I'd look thin too. Well that bit would!

:think1 wonders why it's called a kidney belt

Back in the days when we were a lot fitter/slimmer/had more hair and dirt bikes only had 3" of suspension they were used to give support to the lower back area where you kidneys are. Used mine many times in the bush until I bought a bike (Maico 250 Enduro) that had 12.5" of suspension travel and didn't need it as much. Now I carry it on the ST, and used it to support my broken ribs for the ride home (250Km) from my 'off' on the putty road last year.

Never use to wear one but now I do, helps stop me from getting a sore lower back. Could be a age thing. :wht11 :o

Having fractured six vertebrae in my back, after a fall from a roof in the eighties.. I have worn one ever since. In fact I can't get far without it, regardless of the type of bike. I found there is a great difference in comfort, for me, in the various types available.

I agree with roadrunner, especially if you have a weak back, they are a blessing. I wore one many years ago but due to a reoccurring back injury and a up coming operation, I wouldn't go anywhere without it, not even for 10 mins. I think if I drink more of the sandy coloured ale, then I could rest my belly on the tank and that would in turn help my back, well maybe, well possibility, well what the hell I'll just drink more and see if my theory works. Who's coming to the pub with me?
Cheers
