Looks like a good breakdown of the route.  At first glance Nambucca to Yass looked like a big day, but it's under 900 kays.  Taking it easy you'll have a pretty good run on the major highways.  Nambucca is south of the worst section of the Pacific Hwy.  Getting around Sydney will be the main pain.

I have no definite plans as yet, but will probably take the opportunity to visit Mum in Colac as well as one of my sisters in Bendigo.  If I was doing that I would probably leave a few days before you got to Yass, but then I could do it after the rally.

Sydney is dead easy these days even if you take Pennant Hills Road.  Personally, I would cut in to Singleton, Putty Road, then to Bathurst and then to Oberon, Taralga, Crookwell then on to Gunning, Dalton then to Yass.  Depends on how much time you have.

I'm in the process of looking at my options at the moment. I'm leaving Atherton on the Monday morning at the moment (Mon 17th March)

A few options i'm thinking of
Atherton -> Inland to Charters Towers -> Cappella -> Camp the night (apparently there is good free camping at the showgrounds) (941km)
Cappella -> Emerald -> Toowoomba (Stay with a friend) (807km)
Toowoomba -> Dubbo area (Camp somewhere there) (720km)
Dubbo -> Ballarat with a possible overnight stop somewhere as I won't be booking my accommodation to start until the friday (920km)
Approx 3400km down

Other option was to do Toowoomba on my way home, and head straight down the inland.
Approx 3100km Down

I'm still thinking about the return ride.. All depends on how the trip down goes time wise...

I have the route to Ballarat sorted with an overnight stop near the border. Also doing a side trip to Wolseley and Serviceton  to check out a couple old rail towns and another detour through the Grampians before rejoining national 8 at Ararat for the rest of the trip.

Not sure about the return trip yet. Possibly via Pakenham, a suburb of Melbourne for an overnight stop to visit friends and returning home via the coast with an overnight stop.

Day 1 522 kms
Day 2 351 kms

Looks good Streak. You guys should come inland and we could meet up. For that matter, you could camp up at my place here in Gulargambone and we could head out together. Just a thought. Looking forward to the run. This is my route from here

I'm flying from Darwin to Melbourne a week before the rally for my uncle's birthday, will have a few days to kill before picking up my ST1300 from Garner's on the Friday so I'll be jumping on a plane to Launceston where a friend has promised to lend me a bike for a few days (and teach me how to corner).  I return the ST1300 on the Sunday before flying home to Darwin late that night......
Unfortunately I can't afford the time off work (or parenting) to ride both ways....

Just a bi of info for those riding through Melbourne. There is no tolls for bikes on the Monash, Westgate and Tullamarine freeways. If you die on Eastlink freeway you will have to pay. :thumbs :blk13

No real ride plans for us other than to spend some time having a better look around the south coast of NSW, travel the Great Ocean Road in the opposite direction to last year and to come home via Vic High country to see the bits we missed last year and call into Canberra to see family.

St Helena to Ballarat?  Mmmm, freeway or scenic route?

Easy scenic route, something like this:
(http://i643.photobucket.com/albums/uu159/williamson_photos/Forum%20Inserts/RoutetoBallarat_zpsf1b55c96.png) (http://s643.photobucket.com/user/williamson_photos/media/Forum%20Inserts/RoutetoBallarat_zpsf1b55c96.png.html)

Might catch-up with a few southerners whilst enroute.
Title: National Rally Enroute Accomodation
Post by: Williamson on January 26, 2014, 03:59:10 PM
If any interstate (or even VIC) members are in need of accommodation in Melbourne on the Thursday night before or the Sunday night after Ballarat, a spare bed or two will be available in St Helena around 20km (as-the blackbird-flies) NE of the city centre.

On offer are two queen size beds, clean sheets, hot water, the best hot meal I can do, lock-up under cover parking, cold beer and good company.  All you would need to bring is a friendly disposition and a bunch of flowers for Mrs W (Helen).

Please send a PM if interested in taking advantage.

Yikes!  Lots of freeway there, easy, not many corners, hard to get lost or take wrong turn and fast, and that may be the idea.

But you are missing some really nice riding roads from Ballarat to Woodend to Kilmore to Yea to Bonnie Doon to Mansfield to Whitfield to Beechworth to Wodonga, eg. http://goo.gl/maps/pZRmC (http://goo.gl/maps/pZRmC)

It "only" adds two hours on to your to ride to Cootamundra (according to Google Maps), but I'd reckon it would only more like one hour, and a much more interesting ride.

Leave Wagga by around 5-6am, and that will put us at the famous Beechworth Bakery for an 8-9am brekky, after seeing Albury and Rutherglen.

After Beechworth, we go through Wang and then Ned Kelly country (Glenrowan) for a history stop.

Finally - head to Bendigo, Castlemaine, Daylesford and finally Ballarat for some beer!

Home route TBA.

Most amazing scenery and magnificent road - you'll be glad you did - TAKE CAMERA.

Interestingly, you'll also be 1.8kms higher in altitude than you were at home as well!    :wink1

I might stop at the Brissie airport on my way through to Ballarat - just to see how the less fortunate travellers have to travel.          :nahnah           :rofl

Ros and Dick's planned leisurely ride from Sydney to Ballarat.  http://goo.gl/maps/Cl635 (http://goo.gl/maps/Cl635)
(My pillion will not stand (or sit) for the 700 or 800Km days planned by some of our  fellow OzSToc  pilgrims (most of who are Far Riding tragics.)

Wednesday 19 March - Sydney to Cootamundra NSW 396Km
Thursday 20 March - Cootamundra NSW to Echuca Vic 432Km
Friday 21 March - Echuca Vic to Ballarat Vic via Kerang and Wedderburn Vic 408Km

We anticipate arriving at Ballarat venue around 3.30pm Friday

Anyone thinking of something similar where we could possibly link up enroute let me know.

Cheers

Dick

This will take you through the main street of Tumbarumba and past the 4 Bears Cafe http://www.4bearscafe.com.au/index.html (http://www.4bearscafe.com.au/index.html)

For those who have not been here before, it's worth a stop to see how many different bears they have.  The coffee and poached eggs are good too.

You may even see one of these:

The Big Bear that is, or else Mrs W will have some explaining to do.

......Wednesday 19 March - Sydney to Cootamundra NSW 396Km .......

Not sure what your accommodation options are at Cootamundra or even if your pillion could manage the extra km, but an overnight stay at Henty B & B could be worth the effort.

Basic idea is to ride as much of the high country Victoria roads on the way down as we can until we run out og time and have to go stay for the night near Geelong.  Repeat plan until we have to turn up at Ballarat.
