In total contrast to the rest of Australia - NT is looking at bringing back to old 'open' speed limit. Trials to start on a section of road between Alice and Barrow Creek.
No body better come to grief during the trial! Pleeeeeease! :runyay

What? It's okay to come to grief "before" or "after" the trial?
It's okay, I think I know what you mean.

That's a 280 km legal high speed run. More than enough to keep anyone happy.

The naysayers and the revenue raisers will knock it :law , but having lived in the bush for twelve years, my opinion ( yes I know we all have them and they are said to be like A--oles and everyone has one and no one wants to hear it! |-i) but the fact is that the tyranny of distance and unrealistic speed limits are large contributors to many country accidents.
The dreaded micro sleep kills and it so easy for the statistics to be given one more for the-- cause of accident--excess speed. When it was boredom and nodding off that was the real problem.
So today we ride/drive bikes and cars with far far superior handling braking, lighting and performance and we are more restricted than when I drove my first car a 1934 Chevrolet! That is not a typo.Even then we had areas where there were derestricted signs.
Go figure. :think1

Iv'e driven in the NT and although the limit was 130kph i found i was happy at 120kph ,speed does not kill, driving at inappropriate speed for the conditions kills.

I recently did a road trip to Darwin from Alice and despite the sign posted 130 km/h speed limit on the Stuart Highway, I was amused to find that most motorists, including myself were happy to sit around the 100 to 110 km/h mark. Travelling at 200 clicks would be a hoot but the cost of fuel up there will probably limit most to the odd sporadic burst of speed anyway!
Totally agree. On our trip down from Darwin we sat on 120km the whole way, and were quite content with that speed. Sustained high speed just sucks up the fuel.

Yep. It's not how fast you can go, but how long you can go fast for, and that is what covers distance quickly.
And the determining factor to the latter is as you say StinkyPete fuel consumption.
IBA distance riders are about covering big distances , and high speed, tires you and as you say sucks fuel.
Both incompatable with good point to point times.

Nope, not enough to keep me happy, they need to have a stretch further north too. Have to ride 1200km to get to the open zone :cuss :cuss :cuss

I find for doing significant distances in a day, 135-145kph is fast enough to keep the adrenalin flowing and prevent micronaps, nice to be able to go faster to overtake those bloody road trains though, absolutely nothing wrong with tweaking it up to 180-190kph for that purpose.
