Ok I guess I should start with who is going ?
Your ride plan over and back ?
Or for some fly plan :popcorn
Turtle :wht11
I know it's 5 months away but it's going be on us in no time
-
:think1 Provided I don't have any more financial disasters between now and then, :|||| I will be there. Accomodation is booked, deposit paid etc. :thumb
As for my ride plan, :CB-- I have it narrowed down to about 4 options, :whistle depending on finances and time available. ( some might even say my rides are almost flying anyway !!! ) >:()
-
Theresa and I fly to Melbourne Friday morning. Pick up a rental ST300 about 5 pm and head for Ballarat.
Cabin booked at the Big 4. Back in Melbourne Sunday night in for Theresa to catch a late plane home.
I return the bike Monday morning and fly home Tuesday. All booked and mostly paid for
-
In two minds about riding over, taking a week off to get there and a week to get back or so, a bit of an experience and my first national rally. Ideally would prefer to ride with fellow ST riders for company and mutual support.
Wont make full decision until new year, have to work finances out.
:wht11
-
Johno a ride over in a group again be nice to have a Harley going over and don't worry about fuel range I will bring empty Jerry again for the run :eek
Turtle
-
With a Harley in convoy it will be a long trip
-
That's deep Brian just make sure we all have triple ear plugs in with his pipes |-i
-

Winston66.
Pencil me in for this one.
My initial thoughts is to leave Perth, probably a couple of weeks before Ballarat, and take my time on the ride over, Then down to tour around Tassie. for a couple of weeks or so, I have never been there, and then if everything is ok. and I am feeling up to it to continue north to complete a round trip in order to get back to WA.
Don't know or really care how long all that will take.
There are a lot of other places and some old friends that I want to visit if possible.
Cheers ,
Winston66

-
Hi STill dreaming,
Thanks for that, I am looking forward to making a small detour , in order to take you up on that singing contest,
I have a rotten voice ,but I did win a prize once.
I suspect that it was because I shut up when the eggs were thrown.
Cheers, Winston66

Keep me posted as you travel i do go away at times ,mostly i'm about though.
-
Updates anyone
Mine is still a maybe after buying the new bike $$$$$$$$ :H a little lower will know by Feb if I can do this
Might be a Perth -Ceduna - Ballarat and back the same save on $$$$$ on accommodation hmmmm
Turtle
-
If I can go????, g/son fulltime is a problem for me, also my parents 65th wedding anniversary in Moonta Bay, Sth Aust on 2nd Mar, I would have to go early then have a couple of weeks to kill.
-
update for me is still planning to go but need until feb for final decision and business commitments. :think1 Will probably take my time and do 1000-1200 km steps. May camp in swag and caravan park stops. So anyone that this fits I am easy and cheap too!! :eek
:wht11
-
Im in the same boat as Wombat, I have two weeks leave starting on the 17.3.14, a swag and small tent.
Prepared to swag it if weather is ok but onsite vans or cabins at C/van parks are a good backup for poor weather and a bit of a rest.
Need a nightly meal, usualy a pub meal is good and cheap and a daily shower each night. That is what I did on my last trip.
Haven't booked any accommodation yet so I'm not sure if there is any cabins left at the park, possibly get a tent site but weather in Ballerat is usually pretty cool and sometimes extremely wet.
Would prefer to travel in a group if possible.
Regards
HOFFY.

Great stop after reasonable 2 day ride is the Pub at Wirrulla about 90 KLM east of Ceduna. Single room $45 :thumbsup Double with 2 single beds $75,
and will let you swag out the back on the lawn and use shower and toilets for $10. Good food :eat and motorcycle friendly manager and locals.
:beer
:grin :blk13 :grin

Hey Mitch,
Have you got any ore recommendations for stops an the ride accross.
Cheers , winston66
-
Hi Winston no other recommendations, I usually camp somewhere around Caiguna the first night. :think1
Also I usually fuel up at Ecula instead of Border Village as it is usually more than 10 cents a Ltr cheaper :clap
:grin :blk13 :grin

There's a few 24 hour parking bays across the Nullarbor on the WA side of the border but mostly used by the grey nomads etc so I avoided them and just camped in the usual parking bays or anywhere else that looked ok off the side of the road. If I wanted a shower then a couple dollars in a road house is much cheaper than site fees.
Fuel:- going across there Norseman, Mundrabilla (WA), Penong (SA), were my usual stops but I had extra fuel (20 litres) with me so I could do that. Caiguna and Nullarbor were the most expensive the last time I crossed in 2010.

Just moved the wa discussion to here. Yorkie will discuss trip soon but if you cant make it Hoffy is going so if you had accommodation booked he may take that over. Are we going to escort Johnnj? Can we now look at an updated list. What plans for ride times so a group ride may be the way to go

Yorkie;
Sorry to see you pulled out of the trip over.
Bill tells me you have already made bookings at Ballarat.
If you haven't cancelled the booking, can I take it off your hands please.
If available, what sort of accommodation did you book and for what time period?
Regards
HOFFY

I haven't made any booking as I only had a 50/50 chance of going.
-
Thanks Yorkie, I had better pull my finger out and organise something or I will be sleeping under a tree on a cardboard box.
Pitty we can't sway you to come since you have done so much work on the bike lately. I'm aware of your situation and family always comes first.

Wombat and myself are leaving Monday 17th, I think Wombat has already spoken to you about our plans.

thought I would get ready with the bike so I dropped the oil out not noticing that I had a hole in the oil container so I did drop the oil out all over the floor. :well Second thing was the drive oil level so the inspection cap was off but with no thread. :eek Oh dear!!! Where do you get one of those. :phone :CB-- Phone calls to every dealer hearing yep they always do that but we haven't got one in fact melbourne have none so it is ex Japan. When two days after I plan to leave. :cuss Phone call to the ever reliant parts supplier Yorkie and you guessed it I could take his. :runyay Great members. :-++ New wings on so it may be low flying. :whistle Not touching anything else but the gaffa tape and five minute glue have pried of place. :grin
:think1 Leaving about 6.30 Monday and breakfast or early lunch at Southern Cross. Wait for Gavo then proceed to the wide open spaces. :like
Always open to change

Not sure about your ride plan and times but just be aware that there's no fuel available at night between Ceduna and Port Augusta. There's a Caltex on the highway at Wudinna (about half way between) which closes about 10 pm.

Alan, can you assist with a few fuel questions please.
It's been a couple of years since I crossed over the Nullabor and things are getting a bit fuzzy these days.
Is the Nullabor service station still there, I was told it closed down 12 months ago.
There is no fuel at Yalata Roadhouse but there is one further down the road toward Ceduna, I think it was another aboriginal community, that only sells 91 fuel and not PULP, can you tell me the name of the place please.
The last time I crossed there was access to fuel every 250-300km and I do remember filling up at the Nullabor after surrendering my bike keys and drivers licence before they would turn the pumps on.
Rgds HOFFY
-
Nullabor was still there last year when i came back aithough it was shut late at night.
Trucks and caravans parked up from memory
Filmed a dingo around the bowsers
I rode on to BV got some kip and breaky, eventually caught up to BigTed at Madura Pass

From recent Long Distance ride reports, Norseman - Caiguna - Border Village - Ceduna are only 24hrs now. Nearly all require licence to be handed over before switching pumps on these days due to drive offs. Yalata has been out of action for years now, and the other is Nundroo which is dodgy but there is Penong before Ceduna, just. Ceduna to PA is no 24 hour, Wudinna and Kimba close about 9-10pm but are all about the feeling of the operator on the night.....Nullarbor is about 10pm also.
Roos are prevelant all the way across, emus dominate from Madura to Eucla and camels are more between BV and Nullarbor, then friggin huge wombats from Nullarbor to Penong.
Cheers
-
Thanks for the update fellas, I had a bit of a run in with a couple of rabbits the other night so I don't know how I would go with a camel or a wombat, although I am riding with "WOMBAT" (mornin bill) so for me, night riding is not an option unless my destination is just up the road.
I'm not sure what your riding thoughts are GAVO, I believe we may be meeting up with you between Northam and Southern Cross.
Nundroo may have been the one that didn't sell PULP and although we didn't have any trouble there, it was just unfomfortable with the attitude of the staff and the locals wanting to pull stuff off the bikes etc.
Marks have been placed on the paper maps.

I resent being called BIG :well Whats wrong with little fat wombats :grin
:wht11

My last trip across was back in the first week of November 2010 when I moved back from Karratha to Peterborough.
The 24 hour ones are the ones you mentioned but what the are now I have no clue.
I've never needed to hand license in before getting fuel at anytime from 2007 to 2010 but then I've only ever got fuel during the day.
The only one to close (before 2007) was Yalata which was in it's last days aboriginal owned and run.
Nullarbor is the most expensive this side of the border so I avoid it in favour of Nundroo or Penong which is usually cheaper than Ceduna.
Penong Truck-stop is 24 hour but only for fuel but the food was open until midnight.
With the bike and trailer and 20 litres spare fuel and from Norseman I'd fuel at (spare fuel for this section) Mundrabilla, Penong, Wudinna and Port Augusta.
Nundroo the last time I was there was either Liberty or United and sold E10 but for me is just an if needed fuel stop but usually just a rest stop and something to eat.
I will have to update some of this info this my way over
As for wildlife:-
All I've ever seen are a few roos, a couple of emus, and one dog (stray????). Oh and one or two small wedgies
-
When WA Glen and I teamed up for the rally last year, we encountered fuel stops almost every 200km without exception. We never traveled at night so I can't comment on the 24h access.
As far as wombats go, remember that the Crow Eaters like theirs big... we found one carcass on the road that looked more like a hippo.
Good luck and enjoy it.

I was on my GL1500 which only has a range of a littile over 300 kms so refuelling every 200 or so gave one a warm fuzzy feeling.

:wht11 :H
very quickly, very embarresing,
was riding through S/W forests, with camera mounted on helmet :|||| every corner i turned had yellow/black indicating arrows, riding along a non picturesque section of highway, decided to turn off camera, in doing so,driftered toward centre of road, suddenly,NO warnings, road turned left sharply and dipped away, shit, shit, went into crn, shit shit CAR, did the wrong thing by hitting the back brake to hard, resulted in high side flip.
rolled down embankment(10m)came to rest on cockys fence, bike carried on and hit car.
serverly laserated right forarm.
servere bruising of right shoulder(3 months later still hurting)
Was extremely lucky little fellow (only doing 70-80 klms)
RESULT- save your photo taking till you are off your bike.
100% concentration 100% of the ride.
Hopeing I can find the parts to repair my 1100, LOVE that bike,No more around.
LESSON LEARNT :-++ :-++ :thumbs
