Title: Anyone done a quarter or eighth mile drag on an ST1100
Post by: Old Steve on October 27, 2013, 08:41:34 AM
Has anyone had a 1/4 or 1/8th drag timed on an ST1100?  It's the "keep speed off the streets" meeting at the local drag strip next Friday night and I wondered if it was worth paying my fee and trundling Norma Jean down the strip.  What time could be expected for a well run in 2002 ST1100 with a not so reactive rider on board?

The ST is supposed to have the acceleration of a Ferrari, so with a bit of practice it should do reasonable times.

Just imagine the looks as you whine down the strip, pull a good time, then open the saddle bags to remove your picnic gear and have tea :grin  :grin

Chuck some JATO canisters in the panniers and you may just do an 18 second pass

I'd agree with Brock.  Go find some place to practice your gear changes.  Get used to the power band by feel and sound and get through the gears in the power band (it will be pretty quick!)

Don't listen to Brock about the picnic!  Take all the luggage off- it weighs heaps, even empty!   :-(((

DON'T stall on the grid and embarrass all of us!    :spank

Expect plenty of laughs and winks when you register.  I got a bit of that on my track day on the 1300 amidst all the Ninjas, Dukes etc.

Here's a hint of what you might be able to do.   Quarter mile in 11.85 seconds.

I've done a bit of an internet search and it looks as if a standard ST1100 should do around 12.7 sec.  That's probably with a pretty good rider on board.

So with a less experienced rider and a few km under her belt I'd expect something between 14 to 15 sec.

Not sure yet if I'll do it, watched a customer of mine who has an HR ute with a big burbling American built V8 under the bonnet run 10.099 on Saturday.  I'd never sell him another thing if I did a time better than his.  Luckily that wouldn't be likely.

Rain stopped play!

The wet looks as if it's started, persistent even rain has been falling since the early hours of this morning and will be here until Sunday.  So no drag time for Old Steve this evening.  Maybe next month.

Any bike is far fast over the 1/4 mile if you are just testing it, and don't own it and plan to keep the bike.  The bike would probably enjoy a few passes, similar to putting on a dyno.  Of course none of us would accelerate the bike that hard on the road...
