One less cabin available chaps!!

Good place to go riding too Diesel.  Without wanting to offend anybody I have never had a passion for Rocky after attending every Xmas for years and also working there for 12 months, but Yeppoon & Emu Park are very nice areas.

Hi all.  :thumbsup

Ahhhh Yeppoon  .... what a fabulous destination with lots of great little bays and coves to explore.

Marissa and I checked out Yeppoon 6 months ago on our way back from Mackay after picking up the new Varadero. (Sold it again as soon as I got back but that's another story). We'd recommend that if your going to go to this one, try and get an extra day or two off to explore the region while your there.

There is plenty around Yeppoon that's worthwhile seeing, and a ride around the bays is a must.  Marissa and I would both like to go but will have to leave it till closer to the date before we can confirm whether we'll be able to make this one.

Cheers

Still way too far out for me to commit, I don't even know who I'm working for let alone what will be happening in 6 or 7 months. I'll be able to make a decision sometime closer to the date.

Hardy ha flam'in ha   :well

Though I guess its a fair comment given the number of bikes I have changed in the last 12 months. >:()

I have booked a deluxe cabin this morning. Has a dbl and two bunks, your welcome to share with Marissa and I. See if you can twist Terry's arm to come for the ride too?

We'll be doing the ride up and back over 2 days each way leaving on the Friday morning.

Hey bear I will be travelling down on Friday with my boy, and possibly another mate, and would be willing to organise something if that plan suits.  May just go to Mackay first night depending on when I leave with the other bloke.  Unless I do the run down on Saturday and then Sunday home. Depends on what the other rider wants to do.

No worries bloke, I might leave Thursday and head to Bowen for the night and get to Yeppoon Friday. I have a cabin booked for Fri,Sat,Sun nights so I'll head off on Monday morning and get home Tuesday, then Wednesday off and back to work Thursday.

I might head home via the inland just for something different, haven't been that way since last year. ;-*

Hmmmm ... just found out that I've made a bit of a screw up with my cabin.  :||||

I thought the cabin I have booked slept six ppl, but have found out it only sleeps 4.  :think1

Does anyone else have two spare beds available in their cabin?

EDITED LATER

I have since  booked a second budget cabin that sleeps 3, so between both cabins those that had planned to share with me will all have a bed. Terry Butters, John (Saaz), Paul Gourley, Myself, Hilary Gardner, and Dick Prisgrove.   :beer

I hope those who are going have a great time.

 >:() Andrea & I will be missing this ride, too, as we'll be packing the ST in readiness for the Black Dog Ride Around Australia. We are leaving here in the middle of July and riding to Sydney for the start on 26 July.

Are any of you good people also going on the BDRAA?

There are "State" based rides being organised for riders not going all the way round, so it will be good if you can at least join us and make yourselves known to us, as we ride through your backyard.

This weekend is the maiden voyage for the ST1300+trailer. We're going up to Mt Fox (near Ingham, NQ) for the Stinger Rally. If you're local and get bored on Saturday, please join us.

We'll be meeting at the Yabulu servo and leaving at 9:00am Saturday.

Hey folks,

Are there many people from SE QLD planning on leaving on the Friday to head to Yeppoon?
There is a group of us including myself, Paul G, STroppy, Saaz, Greencan, CK and a mate of mine Hilary riding a CBF1000 that will be leaving Brisbane on Friday morning and heading to Gayndah for the first night.

About 440k's for the day travelling this route.

https://goo.gl/maps/Ewz2a

The following morning we will be continuing north through Biloela to Rockhampton and onto Yeppoon hopefully by mid afternoon on the Saturday.

We will be staying the Friday night at the Burnett Hotel in Gayndah. There are currently plenty of rooms still available if anyone is interested in tagging along with our group on Friday.

This is another way we are thinking, will work it out when we get closer, 700km a day on the bike is pretty easy for teela and I now, we have really worked on our breaks, and riding style, and making sure we enjoy the day that sort of thing.

Hi Streak, could I suggest that when you get to Dululu you continue straight past the pub and onto Mt Morgan and down the range.

It's a nicer ride and Mt Morgan is a very old town and you'll enjoy the ride down the range.

The route you show will take you up to Westwood and into Rocky via the Capricorn highway. It's a pretty boring route with not much to see and you'll cop a lot of mine traffic on the Capricorn.

Up to you, just a suggestion.

Hi Sabie,
That's the way we are planning to go on the second day (through Mt Morgan). It took me a little zooming in on Google maps to discover the road does continue through and is sealed all the way.  It looks like there is some interesting scenery also from what I saw from street view pics.

I agree the run through Westwood and along the Capricorn Hwy is a bit boring. I took that route home about 12 months ago on my way home from Mackay. Not much to see at all.

Cheers

I think that second route will be the more interesting one to take, Graham.  :thumbs

You'll have no trouble doing the ride on the ST with an early start and good planning for stops. I can still do a 1000+k day on my bikes (even the VFR). Backing them up day after day though would be harder. That's where the getting old bit comes into it  :fp

Thank Barry, time will be to short for some, but they do conduct tours of the old Gold Mine works.

A few things re Mt Morgan

- originally had a Rack Railway up the range (shut down when steam finished)
- fire station is the only station left with its original pole (not in use though)
- Mt Morgan had the highest rate of house fires in the country ( this was after the mine closed down .. Go figure)

I'm looking forward to seeing the place. It will be another new road for me heading across that way through Mt Morgan.  :runyay

There is another road for those with a little time up their sleeves that turns right off the Burnett Hwy just north of Eidsvold and heads across to Gin Gin via Mt Perry.

 https://goo.gl/maps/BDlNd

I rode this road for the first time at Easter. It's one of those country roads with a big WOW factor.  A pretty good surface, lots of undulating countryside, oodles of great sweeping bends and best of all ... next to no traffic!!  :thumb

It's one of those roads where you can let the ST loose a just enjoy being in the moment.  :thumbs

I'm hoping to come back along that road again on  the way home as I'm taking 2 days to go up and 2 or 3 to come home.

Hi Barry

No mate it's all dirt and pretty rough. There's a little bit of sealed road either side of Mt Perry. It a shame because the last time I was in Mt Perry they still had the hitching rails at the pub and the old rail tunnel is worth a look at. I wouldn't take my bike on this roads or my car unless it was a 4X4. The roads are very stoney.

The only sealed roads that connect the Burnett highway to the Bruce are ban ban springs - Biggenden Childers or Booyal

Biloela - Gladstone

Mt Morgan - Rocky

Just a side note, I grew up in Gayndah, my Dad owned the local Servo in the middle of town. I don't think there's a road around Gayndah that I haven't driven on with or without a licence....

I'm kind of stunned because I zoomed in on street view yesterday on all the roads and it appears to be sealed all the way through?  :think1

Just want to make sure we are talking about the same piece of road?

ADDED LATER: Sorry Sabie I just reliased your talking about the Mt Perry Road!!!
You can do that road all the way from Gin Gin through Mt Perry and then onto Eidsvold all the way on bitumen  :thumbs
Been there and done it! Great piece of road.

This way is sealed all the way

If you take the second turn off to Mt Perry south of Monto the road through Mt Perry to Gin Gin is sealed all the way. Rode it on the SCA Poker Run a couple of years ago, was nice ride and the surface is pretty good.

This is the exciting way I'm getting to Yeppoon..

Roughly 1100kms each way..

I did the A3 Biloela - Eidsvold - Mt Perry a couple of months back on my way to Bundaberg and it's a good drive (definitely better on the ST!) but need I say that out in the country beware of stock and wildlife - even if they look like they're on the other side of the fence.

I think all the flood repair work is completed out that way now but there's always a bit of patching going on.  I think it's a great ride and am surprised it never figured in The Bear's 100 rides in the Hema motorcycle atlas.  Unfortunately I'm coming from Emerald so will be mixing it with the road trains on the Capricorn Highway.

Oh -  and watch out for Grey Nomads caravans and campers'- the A3 is a favourite alternative to the Bruce Highway.  They've all come out with the cooler weather.

Cheers

At this stage it may be a drive down to Yeppoon ... But I'll have the ST with me.

Our Daughters car has finally given up the ghost with (sounds Like) either a cracked head or blown gasket, either way it's toast. the value the mechanic is asking to fix it is the value of the car. So, Pauline and I have decided to permanently loan her my Mazda Bravo B2600 Utility. So that means a drive to the Sunshine Coast.

My plan is to Drive the Mazda down with my Baby Blue STead on the back and ride her home from Noosa. So It'll mean a stop over at Yeppoon on the way down.

Such is life,

The reality is we were about to sell her anyway as I don't have the funds to support 4 cars anymore. So she may as well be put to some use in Noosa.

Hi folks,

Just a tip to make sure you book accommodation if your planning to head to Yeppoon a day or so early!

I received a call yesterday from the hotel I booked our group of 6 into for Friday night in Gayndah. They told me they have let all their rooms out to long term fruit pickers in the area and have had to cancel our booking.  :eek

I was a little pissed off at first, but I can't really blame them for taking permanent bookings over our one nighter and they did at least call to let me know well in advance  :thumbs

We had no option but to book a motel as the other pub was fully booked as well.

So just a tip to make sure you book and re-confirm your accommodation if your planning to leave for Yeppoon a day or two before hand. With the mining and gas workers and fruit pickers now taking up most if not all of the cheap beds in some remote communities, it appears the days of arriving into a town at 4pm and expecting to find a cheap bed at a pub may be over ?

DavidNBrown is now DBfive........ makes sense if you're an Aston Martin tragic.

Anyway, did Miriam Vale to Rockhampton today on four wheels, lots of roadworks, particularly just north of Mt Larcom, Ambrose and Marmor where Stop/Go and red lights were in play.  There are also a number of sections with 60/80 speed restrictions and while there was no one on them today that could change over the next week.

If you''re coming to Yeppoon on the Bruce Highway, add about half an hour to your original expected travel time.

Cheers

Actually never stopped at that servo at Miriam Vale or tried the crab sandwich.  The café opposite the park just over the level crossing used to be good for coffee.

Having watched a (hopefully replica) DB5 get trashed in "Skyfall" I'd happily go for either.

I'll be getting there in one hit from Caboolture.

Will leave 'twix 0330 and 0430hrs to arrive comfortably by lunch at the Poinciana.

Looks like there's a nice little scenic route to have a looksee once we're there.    :thumb

Ride safe one and all - see you there.    :thumbsup

I'm off tomorrow morning around 7:00 to 7:30 and I'll be in Yeppoon Friday arvo so I'll be waiting for everyone to turn up Saturday. I'm also spending Sunday night at Yeppoon, reckon I might do some sightseeing Sunday since I haven't been there before.

While you are in the area, I can recommend a visit to the Singing Ship Memorial particularly if it is a breezy day, and it usually is there. A really clever sculpture. (apparently it had to be detuned because it was too loud for the locals)

I must be going soft in my old age...

I have put a sleeping bag inside a sleeping bag inside my swag, AND packed some trakkie daks, top, heated vest, and my OzSTOC jacket!       :fp

Sounds like I'm going on OzSTOC's first ever Antarctic RTE!        :crackup

So don't think I've put on any weight when you see me - it'll just be the 'princess' layers.       :rofl

I seem to recall following you a fair bit too.
After catching up with the central qld contingent coming into Rocky then joining them for Breakfast at the coffee club, the last thing i expected to see upon departing was you doing a turn left at the roundabout with the other 500 harley eeejits.I blame the foggy mists of last nights late night caravan park entertainment for the confusion. At home now with another soothing spiced rum  :beer

In Bowen tonight. Couldn't believe the fog this morning leaving Yeppoon, could barely see 50m ahead it was so thick. Didn't get clear until about 70kms north of Rocky. Was also quite cold so I had the winter gloves until I reached Carmila.

Back home, had good run today, early start about 06:15 and home by 13:45. Had a fairly long stop at Townsville for breakky and a lot of roadworks on the way.

Had a great time in Yeppoon, it was fantastic to put faces to names and have a few laughs.

Got home this afternoon after a leisurely run back over 3 days zig zagging our way south.
Had a great time in Yeppoon catching up with old friends and meeting a few new faces. Yeppoon was a fabulous ride destination that I hope we'll do again next year?
Enjoyed the company, the yarns, the roads and the weather  :thumb

All good running.  Cold and windy from then on and have stopped in Tamworth for the night . . . . Bloody cold running . . . Brrrr

Good ride to and from Yeppoon with some great friends and met lotsa new ones . . . Will do it again next year . . . . .  :hatwave  :eat  :beer

Saw that rolling in just after the piccies on the peak...turned out then to be a good decision to spend an hour at the Yeppoon yacht club for brekkie and entertainment after STroopy asked the waitress why the chef was special...glad to read ya made it back to the warm bit of Qld safely Craig.

As mentioned by all others before, twas a great RTE, so much so I have recommended that all future Victorian RTE's from the months of June through to September should also be in Queensland. I do believe I have unanimous support from the ACT contingent, as like me they're still refusing to go home. I know this suggestion is posing a wee logistical challenge for the current Victorian ride co-ordinator, but he's young and I reason he's up for it.

Just a thought.

Ciao, the can :-)

Agree with Dick here!  The ride back was uneventful doing the inland route, until yesterday afternoon. Driving winds, heavy rain and the temperature dropping all the time.  I had all the gear on, including winter gloves and heated vest turned on for the first time (heated seat and grips also helped)  Once I got the screen adjusted to the right spot in conjunction with the visor open a little to avoid fogging and could also see the road, I was home.  Should have kept on going somewhere for a few hours to make it worthwhile....

How did the heated vest perform John?
I don't really need one up here but have a few friends that feel the cold more than me that will be interested to know if they are good or great?

Vest went really well. Often I have put it on instead of a liner and it has been warm enough without turning it on.  I have the more basic earlier one, but if you do feel the cold I would go for one with two battery packs as you would have it on more than me and need to have a few batteries charged.  Also portable away from the bike so you can walk around and feel warm.  A few more options these days.

Left Tamworth, 7am yesterday, cold windy ride home via Denman, Rylstone, Soffala, Bathurst, Oberon, Taralga an Goulburn, arrived home @ 4.20, unpacked, showered and warmed by 5.

Stopped at Golden Arches for fuel n brekkie in Scone, straight thru to Oberon for fuel and a large bowl of pumpkin soup and toast @ D J's Cafe (a great & very friendly eatery). Windy and cold all day but became extremely windy and cold from there to home. Temp showed around 8-9 c all day brrrr . . .

Unlike Couch, I don't know Yeppoon at all, as my last visit there was in 1958, when I was 6. So imagine my surprise to find that our seaside appartment that my parents took me to on the steam train from Lakes Creek station, still had it's original sheen and spaciousness I remembered all those decades ago. Fancy that :fp
