Well I finally own an ST1300 :rd13. :runyay
After 1975kms from Tullamarine to Tweed Heads, via Canberra, Kiama, Newcastle, The Bike Expo in Sydney, back to Newcastle (return trip by train) and then home to Tweed Heads the whole trip mostly in the rain.
I can only give a big :thumbs up to the Pirelli Angel GTs and they only had 102kms on them, when I picked the bike up off Wayne'O , so steady Eddy for a the first couple of hundred kms in the wet.
I have to say these ST thingy,s aren't such a bad thing :thumb.
Coming from a VFR800 it sure was a big change of STead.
There were many good points, handling, steering, ease of doing Uturns, weather protection. :thumbs
Not as comfortable as I thought it would be :'(, however most of that comment problem arises from what Honda call a saddle.
I deliberately left the Airhawk in the panniers from pick up to Newcastle to give the saddle a fair trial.
By then I couldn't get it on fast enough.
Absolutely bloody amazingly economical. :hatwave I sat around 20 above as you do , with a bit of a dash here and there and working on fuel dockets and the odometer and a calculator I averaged 20.3kpl. One tankful over 403 kms, fueling up at Woodburn averaged 21.19kpl. I was stunned, all that weight and frontal mass and cheaper to run than my VFRs.
Can't wait to add a few farkles and meeting up with some of you blokes /ladies.
Cheers
-
Welcome Roadrunner - very glad to have you in the clan.... welcome from the West!
-
Sterling effort that man.
-
Congrats on your new toy ....and what a way to get acquainted then a huge roadtrip.....i wish you both the beST for future miles....Cheers Brian (ex VFR800,ST1300 pilot....plus too many others to mention)
-
Excellent effort good sir! Love it!
-
Great that you two have hit it off so well. You forgot to mention "smooth"! Wot thuh
Gotta agree it's a damn shame Honda didn't put a decent seat on the bike. :spank
20+ (as you do) eh? Wish I had your luck! I don't dare push the limit as much as I used to with Qld dropping the tolerance level (whatever that was) twice in 6 months. :law
-
Roadrunner ! I am glad you finally got your ST1300. They are a great Bike
But the seat is not the best but passable with a Air Hawk seat
:beer
-
good to see you enjoying the bike, welcome to the forum
-
Hi Roadrunner and welcome.
I had my seat modified by MJM in Goulburn and I'm very happy with the result.
I completed an SS1600 on a recent ride to Mallacoota with no seat problems. Like you I carried an Air Hawk in a pannier just in case, though I didn't need it.
-
Congrats on finally getting the ST mate :runyay
It sounds like you have found a new love :thumbs
I look forward to catching up with you and checking out the new Steed :hatwave
Cheers
Shiney
-
Thanks one and all for the warm welcome.
Yes Biggles I did fail to acknowledge that attribute :spank SMOOOOOOOOOOOOth as a baby's bum.
As for the rest of it I have had 50 years playing the grey man, and only had one speeding ticket, due to lack of concentration whilst looking for a street number. :||||
My best mate just sold his $110000.00 (no not a typo) Ducati desmodeicci because he couldn't go out without getting a ticket from the gentlemen in blue, and not one to their annual Christmas party!
But like I told him if you want to dress like a barbers pole with neon lights well ya gonna attract attention. :law
However I may have picked one up in Victoria this trip as I was looking for the bloody driving light switch, when of a sudden I,m in amongst a forest of cameras :cuss
By the way, there is no switch, which I am sure I will have to address, as I am sure that is illegal both in Qld and NSW.
Other than that and the Oxford heated grips not being wired to the ignition ( a flat battery waiting to happen) the bike is great.
And I would like to acknowkledge Wayne'Os patience, preparation and delivery of the bike to Tullamarine and posting my flight bag back to me.
Cheers
-
Whilst on the acknowledgement trail. I would like to mention Nathan< Sydney Blood Bikes, who went out of his way to purchase a Bagster tank cover for me whilst he was in the UK :thumb And even though I had never met him, said fix up the dollars when I get back! So thanks big time Nathan :beer
-
Hello Roadrunner and a warm welcome, enjoy your new toy :thumbsup
Pockey :wink1
-
Further to becoming the Real McCoy I went down to the trusty Stead, :rd13 which is parked across the end of the garage, thanks to a long channel type bike dolley. After pulling the bike out I then affixed the OZstoc sticker to the screen :thumb And as I placed the Davo memorial sticker on the opposite side of the screen the bloody left hand pannier fell off :fp onto the concrete floor where it picked up a row of little scratches :'( Apparently I had not locked the thing on properly after washing it yesterday. :||||
I guess each day is a bit like Forrest Gumps :Chocies
-
When installing the panniers, a key item to note is the groove at the front that straddles the bike frame. If that's in place, then you've almost certainly got it seated properly. I always give them a good jiggle after installing.
-
Glad you've finally done it RR.
I've been reading you're posts leading up to this moment - seeing the excitement growing.
Now you know what we all know! :wink1
Well done mate. Make sure you get to a few OzSTOC RTEs and meet some fine members as this will complete the ST experience! :thumb
Cheers, Diesel

Nah. He's still got to spend an inordinate amount on farkles before he's had the "full" experience!
-
Oh. And drop it once because of a sidestand stuff up or similar! :||||
Then he will have earned all his stripes!
-
Well I have spent a few dollars for farkles Biggles :'( Fitted the tip over bars and obligatory extended pillion pegs yesterday)
Have the Bagster tank cover and bag ready to go on and a radiator guard, oh yes and the fender extender.
Am trying to decide whether to replace the Hella driving lights with the 4 inch Hids or the 2 inch Hids or maybe the Hella f550s hm :think1 ( I have them all lined up waiting) and then of course I have the Hi/lo beam HiDs coming from DDMTuning (don't get me started on that mob. :||||
BUT if full membership requires dropping the bloody thing then I am hoping to remain the impostor and not the REAL Mc COY :rockon
As soon as a few family medical problems have been finalised I will definitely be out there to RTE's whatever Diesel, depends on family members surgery but if I am in the clear hope to go to Ballarat. Should know by the end of the month.
Right now trying to sort the comms situation with the new helmet.
-
Well done mate, photos or it didn't happen
-
Marcus
Mate I am months shy of 70 not 17 so I hunt around for three year olds to address my computer problems :||||
I swear kids are born with an Apple in their mouth these days and not one off a tree! :wink1
As for attaching photos well mate I know where the Dura ,Arachnod and Pia mater are and what the Adenoneurohyphophysis is and its functions and I speak a bit of Mandarin, so I am not completely Non compes mentis but DO NOT, NO WAY EVER, ASK ME TO ATTACH PHOTOS TO emails here I am technologically challenged big time :|||| But I do like looking at the way others demonstrate their farkling with photos. :thumb
-
Fair enough mate haha
-
When you get to next RTE, get someone a bit more tech savvy to take pics and post them up. ;-)

Now that's my idea technology.Peeez :thumb
I once held a Microsoft A+ Certified Technicians Certificate and could actually build computers myself, back in the days of DOS.
But I intensely disliked the software side of it. So I think I will run with your suggestion. :thumbs
Until I get it figured out that is :||||. Seems a bit unfair enjoying the work of others and not contributing some input. :think1
-
I'm not sure this FORUM thingy is a good thing. :eek
Marcus wants me too become a photographer :eek I'm working on it Marcus.
AND Biggles well he says I have to have the bike on its side |-i to become a fully fledged member :rockon
So to avoid that very situation, I am riding to Sydney first week of December to undertake a LOW SPEED HANDLING COURSE, first day. Followed by a 300km Roadcraft ride day on the Thursday and maybe a bit of other stuff on the Friday.
Having done several other courses, with other leading training providers. I have found this bloke to be the only one who has an emphasis on LOW SPEED HANDLING.
Paul being a ex Instructor at the Police Facility at Goulburn :-++ should be able to teach me what the handlebars are for!
So hopefully Biggles ,at least whilst moving I hope to remain an Imposter.
-
Goodonya Roadrunner. Don't forget to claim your rebate from the Ulysses Club. :thumbsup
-
Hey thanks for that. :thumb I never gave it a thought.
Did not post the providers name as I do not know if you can do that on here. :-(((
Maybe you can enlighten me?
If so I could give a bit of a run down on the course when I get back, if anyone would be interested in me doing that.
-

It's not advertising- it's a Public Service you'd be providing, so post away.
We promote good suppliers of everything all the time on this Forum.
If they become supporters by offering Club discounts and offering a few dollars sponsorship, they even get more boosting.

Biggles
This is a bit of background on Paul Riley who is the founder of Skillmaster.com.au
He is the bloke I am going to do One on One training with for probably three days starting Wednesday 4th Dec.
I do not have the venue yet. But wherever, I'll be there.
The best part is if I need a Paramedic I wont have to wait long! :wink1
The mans background:
Paul was the first Motorcycle Paramedic to instruct on the NSW Police Solo Cycle training course in Goulburn. This course is required for Police Officers and Paramedics seeking to perform emergency responses on motorcycles. He worked in the city of Sydney for many years on the Ambulance Motorcycles, without ever falling off, crashing or being injured.
The methods taught by the NSW Police Service have been shown to improve riding skills dramatically during this extensive training course. Whilst the amount of time available for general training is considerably shorter, the specific skills required to ensure confident and safe road riding can be developed throughout this personalised course. Skills developed and practiced at low speed carry over to road riding making riders more confident and capable of responding appropriately when things go pear shaped.
Track riding and ride days develop a lot of very important skills. This training is designed to suit individuals and can be completed on roads and car parks. Other organisations can cater for the more advanced riding skills. Skill Master training is designed to help people to undo some bad habits and help them gain confidence in the riding environment they are in the most- public roads, car parks, lane ways etc.
Many motorcyclists fall off their bikes at low speed or even walking pace. Casual observation of many riders on the road shows that most are relying on gyroscopic motion to hold them up once moving, with little understanding of how to control the bike at speeds where the bike does not have sufficient momentum to continue smoothly without significant rider input.
Skill Master instructors are people with developed and applied skills for riding on the road.
I found he was the only bloke who places emphasis on SLOW MOTORCYCLE CONTROL very much like Jerry "Motorman" Palladino in Florida USA.
-
PS Biggles I forgot to mention Paul gives discounts for Ulysses members. I'll have to see If I can get him to list Ozstoc members for discounts too. :wink1
-
Could we be looking at an OzSTOC training day here? I'd reckon with a SEQ location we could muster a reasonable number of starters if the price was reasonable.
-
I'll sound Paul out on that. And if he is interested ask him to speak to Streak or Diesel with some ideas.
He runs different types of courses so it would depend on what people want.
'
Biggles if you look up www.RideLikeaPro.com (http://www.RideLikeaPro.com) a company in Florida.USA run by Jerry "Motorman" Palladino you will find heaps of info and videos on youtube. This is the type of training I have been looking for but have been unable to find despite emails to some of the leading providers in our country.
Until I spoke to a lady at Pauls exhibition at the Sydney Bike Expo.
Most courses these days, Defensive,Advanced, Cornering and Braking seem to run around the $500.00
I have done a few but like many other riders I see I am not that good at Low Speed Control and U turns and am not afraid to admit it.
The other day at Mermaid Beach I saw this copper do the most impressive U turn, with about the effort of putting on your blinker light.
And I thought ,find someone here or go to Miami. After talking to Paul I think I have found the right outfit.

I have the DVD.
-
Biggles, I read through that picture you posted.
I get the why of the cone exercise but in 30 plus years of riding all that I've ever avoided is a few pot holes and dead wildlife on the road.
Not to sure about the "Slow Race" thing either. It seems a contradiction to use both brakes and throttle at the same time. The next time I ride down the shop I'll try this and see how I go.
-
A slow race is fun, and interesting to try.
I saw it demo'd some time ago, but as I was riding a ZZR 1100 at the time, didnt give it a go. The Cops were on 1100s, and made it look easy.
-
Hey guys, I found the slow race perfect for balance, especially coming to the traffic lights you know are going to change or stuck in slow traffic which is getting more common.
And no I'm not a lane splitter.
Regards, Tom.
-
The "power against rear brake" is a technique widely taught that permits the optimum control. Yes, it's counter-intuitive, but try it and you'll find you have much better control in slow tight turns. If you watch those Police time-trial vids on Youtube you'll see they ride the brake through every turn while keeping the power on. It's the way I was taught when I did QRide years ago to get my licence after letting it lapse for too many years.
It's no drama for wet clutches, and you don't need much brake or revs.
-
Ah Biggles your on the money mate :thumb
-
Biggles
Mate you can lift that jinx now. I feel I have qualified for The Real McCoy bit, having dropped the bloody bike at the course with SkillMaster's :'( on its left side.)
And the having to take the bike off the sidestand dolley last night in prep for a ride to catch up with Shiney on the northside of Brisbane today.
I dropped the mongrel on its right side!!!!!!!!!! :cuss
And jigged my back into the bargain, trying to right the bugger. I tell you those postie bikes are looking good weight wise!!
Yes I know a poor tradie blames his tools. Shiney has sent me vid that Marcus put out on how to pick up three ton in one go!
This sort of feels like some initiation rite of passage.

Roadrunner
its all right now it is fully balanced :rofl
