Post by: Streak on January 09, 2012, 09:26:09 PM
Hi gents, I am attempting my first far ride in february to Nambucca heads, and my ST1100 is due for a service, would anyone is the S.E. corner be up for teaching me to service my bike, and show me a little about her?

I am happy to bring oil, filters, and myself to you, I need to do it before the 17th of feb.

Cheers

Streak

That is about it, i have never serviced this bike myself, so i thought having a watching eye telling me don't do that would be handy

Repco ROF 135 filter, and HPR15 15W40 Deisel (semi synthetic) cost is about $40.00.

Put bike on centre stand, have bike pointing slightly down hill if possible, aids in draining sump.
Drop bottom cowl, cover exhaust with foil ( or just wipe spilled oil with rag, and burn the rest off)
Remove drain plug at front of engine, ( place catch pan first )
Remove oil filter ( left side, above exhaust pipe) oops, oil spill :)

Wipe up oil, put a smear of oil on filter seal.
Fit filter, do it up until firm then turn another half to 3/4 turn (by hand)
Fit drain plug.
Use a funnel to get 4 litres of oil into engine
start engine, run for 5 or 10 min, stop and let oil drain back to sump ( 1 beer should be long enough)
Check oil level, ( a torch might help ) should be between lines, top up as needed.
refit bottom cowl ( clean up spills first)
Pour waste oil into empty container and leave for recycle collection.

have a shower, followed by beer. :beer :beer :beer

Once you see the basics done it will not seem so daunting.

For our next installment we will do a valve check, follwed by a timing belt change   :crackup

I volunteer to take Streak's bike apart at the national meet to show people the basics.  Anyone up for putting it back together sometime :wink1

Hell yeah, I'll put it back together. Although Streak will have to sign a waiver before getting back on it...That's cool with you streak, right?

Can someone please advise which (other) air filter to use with the ST1100? Honda geniuine = $75!
It look like the one off my old EH Holden and they weren't $75...

Supposedly the Fram CA351 one does fit with a bit of minor modification, with a "ring" of 1/4" I.D. fuel line to the top of it and it fits perfectly. I don't know what filters we get in Australia match this.  The OEM filter can be cleaned supposedly and very lightly oiled.  Perhaps go down to supercheap and go through the round filters to find one - only slightly not as high would do with the modification.

I run a K&N I bought marked down at the local bike shop

I looked for the Fram air filter without success.  I also looked through the Ryco and Repco catalogues but found nothing close in terms of dimensions for the ST1100.  I even took the filter in to Autobarn to match it up to something but failed miserably.

In the end I found some Hi-Flo filters for a decent price on eBay.com so I bought 4, it took the sting out of the shipping a little.

I can't believe how much air filters cost in Oz!!

That's good value for an item that will last you 15+ years...I have the same air filter in the bike now as was fitted in Sept 1997, and it's only got 160,500 clicks on it...reckon it'll see 20 years (at least), and another 50,000clicks :wink1

...now if your wondering if this is really true...might I suggest that when you next take a really close look at it, do so over the laundry sink, where there is hot water, some washing powder or 'nappisan', and maybe a small scrubbing brush...and it if the penny drops, just be sure you don't make the same mistake I made in May 1998 and let my Wife see me :thumb

Ciao, the can :)
