I was in the comms bit of the Aviation industry for 12 years in the British Royal Air Force, then 10 years in Lockhead in Saudi Australia and then 13 Years in Boeing Aviation (all military contracts) :cuss

I might get a jump on Biggles here.
Diesel - UTAH??
Whizz - no W??, but you got U correct.
40 years in the signal corps, not all spent in comms duties.
-
I spotted my lack of a "W" whilst you were typing and corrected it, but I agree Diesel boobooed!
o:)
-
"U" was always "Uniform" where I come from.

Can anyone explain why phonetic is spelt with a PH? :nahnah
-
We also used to use in 27meg days of CB.
Polite terms of "Foxtrot Oscar" was quite commonly heard along and another being "Delta Hotel" and maybe a couple I've forgotten

Can anyone explain why phonetic is spelt with a PH?
It was derived from the Greek word "phonein" = "to produce a sound".
The ancient Greek script had no "f".
-
I listen to the firies on the radio during the day. Had to laugh when a paid professional was spelling a street.." Sierra, Papa, Echo, November, whatever C is, Echo."
I'd kick a volunteers arse if they couldn't use the phonetic alphabet correctly, it's pretty easy to learn.
-
It's also interesting to see how a number of services have bastardised the set for their own organisation. Police seem to featured in this regard. The locals use A = Adam, C= Catalina, D = David otherwise the same.
-
got 100%. Been a long time since I was in the Navy but a bit must have stuck in the grey matter... Somewhere.
-
Some of the variations come from watching too many US TV shows. They always have to be different.

Chris and I use to use this at home for our secret squirrel talk around the kids, that is until they learnt it to use it as well :crackup
Pockey :grin

I hadn't even thought about the phonetic alphabet for 20 year until this was brought up. I managed (with a little thinking) to get the lot. I too was a Uniform man. To be honest, it was only used rarely over the radio (I suppose we had good radio reception) with the Melb. Metro Ambulance, but it was used so every officer knew it well.
A lot of our communication was done using code numbers, so we has signal 1's, signal 8's signal 83's and ...... theoretically about a hundred of them. This (in part) kept a degree of confidentiality in our communications that might be overheard by the public. That was the theory anyway. It also simplified communication to free up otherwise crowded channels.
Ahhhh - those were the days....
Here endeth the hi-jack....

No problems here, learnt it as a teenager in St John Cadets, and it's always stuck. Helps lots when trying to spell NT town names to emergency operators down south....

I got 100% easy :runyay
Been in the security industry for over 15 years :grin
