Our local rail museum had an open day so here's some of the pictures we took.
Even though it was only two kms from home we rode the bike for what was one of our shortest rides ever.

I come from a long line of railwaymen. My Dad was a fireman on about the last steamy running in SA. at Snowtown in the 60's. My brother still drives trains from Adelaide to Perth.
I'll have to make a trip up to Peterborough one day to visit the museaum. While up that way I think the Pichi Richi railway would;nt be too far away.

Similar to my Dad as well. He was a fireman in NSW before coming to SA. I'm aware he was a fireman while we were at Wallaroo ( i was aged under 5) in about 1959/60.
The sis and I are classic SA railway kids, moved every 12/18 months and I forget most of the places we've lived.

The Railway is a great career. I joined Queensland Rail in July 1975. And have progressed from Cleaner to Fireman to Driver
I did my Drivers exam in 1985. I still enjoy going to work most days, but getting sick of the night work :cuss
I had an Uncle who was a Station Master, so was always interested in Rail
But I don't think I will still be working in 10 years at 67 retirement age. I don't think the old body will stand up to it :grin

At 16 the railways was my first job, should have stayed in it. Though not sure who I would have ended up working with with these days. 16 was to young for driving so it was yard and station work until you turned 18

I began my trade as an electrical fitter/mechanic in the NSW Railways. After my apprenticeship I left for a while and then was asked back to do upgrades on the red rattlers at the Redfern workshops in NSW. They kept the Queens carriage there and I got to have a look through with Michael Gross (the Dad from the TV show 'Family Ties' with Michael J Fox) who is a train buff. I moved to Queensland and worked for ASEA (now Bombardier) wiring train cubicles, then mechanical drafting for the QLD Tilt Train project, and later repairing a derailed one, building new diesel-electric locomotives (well, wiring them anyway).. so I have tended to gravitate towards train jobs.

To add insult to injury, in 10 years time the retirement age will very likely be 70 years of age, not 67! :OldMan Ha!!
But I don't think I will still be working in 10 years at 67 retirement age. I don't think the old body will stand up to it :grin
