Title: Rusting swing arms
Post by: Sean on December 30, 2013, 04:37:20 PM
One of the guys at work is trying to convince the other half to let him have another bike. He has been googling ST1100 and ST13000 and has come across a couple of reports of ST1100 swing arms rusting out. Anyone else heard of this or can throw some light on the subject.

All contributions greatly appreciated.

Can be a common problem in countries that have high snowfall and icy roads, the salt that is used to reduce the ice on the roads can cause the swingarms to suffer quite bad rusting. Not a big problem in Oz.

I found the same reports when I was first looking at the ST :eek

I looked and looked :CB-- but wasn't able to find any instances where this had been an issue in Australia :hatwave... appears to be mainly a UK issue >:()

So shouldn't be anything to worry about with an Aussie ST :thumbsup

Cheers

Yes, mostly a UK thing as they salt the roads in winter, but ST1100 owners still ride.  Also things that happen in these conditions are that the collector on the exhaust rust out and the 40amp alternators can get corroded and need replacing.  All of the bike is subject to the effects of the salting.

There have been some great looking ST1100 and ST1300 coming up, so make sure he keeps looking.

Max Walker suffered from a rusty 'swing' arm after a season off World Series Cricket in 1981 - so the problem has been here before!

Right. I'll be off then.      :fp

But BEFORE I DO............

Here is a video about it from a Scotsman in the UK...
