Title: wanted Rear Pannier Guards from GL1800
Post by: zevk on January 04, 2014, 06:52:24 PM
Would any member have a pair of rear pannier (saddlebags) guards for sale? The Goldwing GL1800 uses them and appear to be mountable on the ST1300

I dont want to spend $200 for a new pr. although $100 incl shipping for this item seems ok...

Does anyone have these mounted on thier ST1300?
Do they actually keep the body bits off the ground on the event of a tip-over?
Do they pose any problems for rider or pillion feet?

I would be surprised if those will fit an ST1300. I fitted these to my ST1300.

Scroll down on the lefthand side and select Tip Over Bars

Unfortunately above what you want to spend.

They do fit apparently, need to squeeze the ends to line up with the holes on the ST and also longer bolts.  Here is a link from the US,

I have only had one tip over when trying to put the bike on center stand on uneven pavement, my stoopidity.
The higher I lifted, the more it leaned to the right and away from me.
luckily it was a slow drop and not much more than slight scuff to plastic tip-over cover,,,,

TJ and WA Glen thanks for the info!
The bygdawg bars look more compact and tailored for the bike but also more expensive, I guesse u get what u pay for... thanks again!

If you are happy with the look of the GL1800 ones I am sure you would be able to find some at a wreckers in Australia at the right price and less postage.

I agree with Glen  :thumb

Must admit I have these from Motorcycle Larry (MC L)   http://www.motorcyclelarry.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=320 (http://www.motorcyclelarry.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=320)

I would suggest if you go with the MCL then get the rear foot peg extensions at the same time  :thumbs

Hi Zvek.     Do you really need the guards?    Unfortunately I know from personal experience that if you drop the bike, the panniers do not hit the ground.   The tip over guards hit, and not much else.   Sadly, I know this from testing the theory for both the right and left sides.

thanks Pete,

I also had 2 "driveway/parking" tip overs,  one on Right and one on Left side. No damage to rear sides either but for a small investment in rear crash bars, I may gain extra protection... just a thought. :think1
thanks anyway

In my tip-over, because of the camber of the road, the bike went past the engine cover and landed on the mirror cover, breaking the mirror.
I wonder whether a rear bar might have been enough to arrest the progress?
No way of knowing without reproducing the situation, but thinking it adds a bit more leverage down low.
