Title: Texting whilst driving? Hmmmmm.....
Post by: Diesel on January 13, 2014, 12:21:51 PM
Was heading from Maleny to Montville/Flaxton along the range during a sun shower over the holidays with Mrs Diesel, and rounded a bend to see this....

It happened 60 secs before we got there, and another car with two older folks stopped on the other side of the road to help as well.

A shaken and teary, but otherwise okay young lass had just crawled out of the now compressed passenger cabin area and was being consoled by the couple (who were also phoning for police attendance).

I had a good look inside the car, and asked the girl if anyone else or any pets were still in the vehicle. No.

I then had to direct traffic as the road was wet and greasy, and cars were making a meal of getting by the scene safely.

Another car pulled up and a young fella asked if he could help, so I asked him if he was able to (without risk) turn off the overturned car's ignition - he couldn't.

I approached the girl one last time to check for shock, and offered my phone if she needed to contact family etc.

I told her to make sure she gets a 'facebook status' pic when her phone turns up.

My empathy for the girl would take a nasty turn if I found out she was texting etc which caused these events. We were the next car along and could have had a head-on if timing was only a minute different. I never found out. I give the benefit of the doubt as the (straight) road was greasy and it was raining.

The driver was very brave and helpful in answering questions - waaay too much trauma usually for a girl of her age to have to deal with. Kudos to her.      :thumbs

Cheers, Diesel

Great work Diesel :-++ :-++ :-++
There are a lot of people that wouldn't stop to help at all :'(

I agree the girl sounds like she was taking it very well all things considered :clap a lot of people have difficultly just acknowledging that people are even talking to them :eek
And as you pointed out the texting while driving is a big issue now days :well hopefully if she was texting while driving she will now understand why people say not to do it.

The wife and I were out for a ride last Wednesday, we were heading down the Hume toward Mt Ousley and I overtook a car that was 'wandering a bit in it's lane', sure enough, a young girl driving on the phone and obviously texting as she drove. They don't learn.

I had a very similar incident happen to me a few years back. I came upon a car on it's roof in the middle of the road (back road outer Hervey Bay). Young girl inside her head pinned between the seat headrest and the roof lining. As I looked into the upturned car and saw her there I heard the sirens in the distance. She was a bit upset but talking and couldn't remove her head, so I just assured her that she was ok and that I wouldn't move because the emergency services were only minutes away. The emergencies services extracted her, she was ok and they took her away in the ambulance. A while later I spoke to someone who knew her and I was told that she was within mm's of breaking her neck while she was pinned in the car.

Apparently 693 drivers have been booked for this since WA police started using helmet cameras to catch them out. This started just around Christmas time.

What a great idea.  Everyone will be dropping their phones on the floor every time they see a motorbike in their vicinity.
My observation is it's almost always P platers.  Now why would that be?

My first thought was 693 drivers didn't see a motorcycle in their mirrors coming up.

Why don't they just make it compulsory to install an electronic device in each and every vehicle that stops all phone service in the vehicle? Have we all become so obsessed with phones to the point where we can't go a couple of hours without using one. Seems like a simple solution to a major problem.
