Title: Introduce me
Post by: ppopeye on January 31, 2014, 11:16:00 AM
 Hi all.
I am in the market for an ST1300. My last ride was a Yamaha 500 in the early eighties.
I was caravanning at Inverell when an ST set up camp near me. Whilst talking to StinkyPete I sat on his machine and started dreaming of motorcycling again.
Looked at an ST1300 this week in Thomastown, Victoria at a dealer. Its pricey but has low k's and lots of useful extras. I am looking at retiring soon but not sure exactly when or when to buy a bike. Its a bit hard to know what a good one rides like as I havent ridden any bike for so long.
I believe you dont forget how to ride though.
Love the way Ozstoc works and look forward to meeting people very soon.
I am in Croydon,Victoria.
Cheers
Ppopeye

First of all, welcome to OzSTOC.

Secondly, I've checked the Thomastown dealer's website.  An answer depends on which ST1300 you were looking at (there are two currently listed), eg:

#  $14,000 ride-away with 12,500km ain't too bad, especially with the extras fitted.  The original owner probably paid in excess of $28,000 ride-away back in 2005.

Or

#  $12,500 ride-away with 20,500km is also good value, even without the extras.  The original owner probably paid in excess of $27,000 ride-away back in 2009.

Both have such low km, they should be like new bikes, and new bikes at half price or less is pretty good, and even beter if the dealer accepts a lower offer.  What are doing reading these posts then?  Get to it, I reckon they won't last long.

I'm in St Helena (half way between you and Thomastown), if you want to talk more send me a message and we'll exchange mobile no.s.

Cheers, Michael

Hi ppopeye and welcome to OzSTOC from the SA crew.   :hatwave

I just knew that after you had had a sit and a dream on my ST that you'd take the bait and we'd see you here eventually.   You certainly don't forget how to ride, and never forget the thrill of riding which gets into your blood.   It's an itch that only riding can fix.   The club has a Ride to Eat at Caldermeade just east of Melbourne on Saturday 8th February.    Come along with your wife, have a look at some bikes and have a chat with some of the members.  Chris and I are riding over from Adelaide.   You will find the details under "Victoria" on the forum.
Pete (and Chris)

Welcome ppopeye,
I remember you well, sitting on Pete's bike at Inverell.

As Pete said, pop over to Ballarat for our National rally and see the ST family in action.

Gday ppopeye

From Australind WA, I too have just got back into bikes after a lay off.
Apparently not as long as you though. I am meeting the West crowd for the first time tomorrow at an RTE outing
This mob seem very helpful, as you can see by your replies.
I am looking forward to introducing myself to the crew, talk about all things ST & have a chat
Good luck & I hope you find a bike to suit your needs.

Welcome Popeye. Don't forget about ST1100s. They maybe older (and cheaper) but are still a good bike.

Welcome to the best biking Forum on the world-wide web.
I think you should buy both ST1300s, because I'm a great believer in having a spare.  What if you wanted to go for a ride and your first choice was dirty.  Surely the other one would be clean!
Anyhoo, you don't know how lucky you were meeting Pete!
No such thing as luck in these important matters- that was Providence!     :wink1

Well, that didnt take too long. I had a nervous ride home in the heat  last Friday in all new gear and not having ridden for nearly 30 years. Everyone was right. You don't forget how it goes. The new ride is a 2005 ST1300 with a whole 12500 km on speedo. Its pretty much like new. It has GPS, marine CD radio, Oxford grips and even Honda carpet in the top box. Now I just need to ride it.

Now I just need to ride it.

A lot of us had a fair break between bikes for whatever reason, I had a 20 year break and just glad I climbed back on  :grin

The joy's of the open road are waiting for you  :hatwave

Welcome, and well done  :runyay  The STs are easy to get on with. Doing a refresher riding course is often a great idea..

I would heartily endorse saaz's advice about a refresher course.
There are lots of good rider techniques taught these days that were only sometimes learned by trial and error when you were last riding.  Some of us still do annual refresher courses even though we ride nearly every day.
